Faculty and Student News
World's Largest Collection of Yiddish and Klezmer Music
Joel Rubin, associate Professor of Music, interviewed with Jewish News Online about his role in the revival of Klezmer music in the United States. Charlottesville is seen as a stronghold of this art, one that was brought over by immigrants and was almost lost to the country until recently. Rubin said that "there's a whole generation of us now who are that link." Rubin is one of the instructors now that is securing klezmer's place in the future of world music. Journalist Nina-Maria Potts met with and recorded the UVA Klezmer Ensemble rehearsing, which, along with other clips on the topic, is available on their website.

Interview with Kelly Sulick, Music Director of the 2nd Annual UVA Chamber Music Festival
John Delehanty, host of the classical program Dawn's Early Light, interviewed Kelly Sulick, McIntire Department of Music faculty member and music director of the UVA Chamber Music Festival. The festival begins on Friday, February 1 and and concludes on Sunday, February 10. Ms. Sulick, a flautist, will also perform as a member of the woodwind chamber group, The Albemarle Ensemble, on Friday, February 8.
Portions of the interview ran last week on Wednesday morning's Gamut and Thursday's Classical Cafe, between 6:00 and 9:00 a.m. The festival programs contain extraordinary depth ranging from the baroque of Bach and Leclair to modern Alleged Dances of John Adams. The interview promises interesting insights into how the programs were conceived and how a performing musician approaches an upcoming concert.
