Quick Tip

Storm from South Africa writes:

Hi,

Is there any way in which to get Gmail listed in Windows 7 so it may be selected as the default mail programme?

Answer – Yes and No. Since Gmail isn't actually installed on your computer (you access it via the Internet), it won't be listed an option in Windows as your default mail program. However, you can download Gmail Notifier from Google here.

  1. Right-click the Notifier icon in your system tray, and select Options.
  2. Check the box next to Use Gmail for internet mailto: links.
  3. Click OK.

Now, when you click on a hyper-linked e-mail address, you'll get the Gmail window.

Hope that helps.

You Are Not Alone...

Everyone Agrees - Solar Has Never Looked So Smart!

Quiz Time - What The Heck Is The Item Below?

a) A Solar Charger For Your Mobile Phone
b) A Solar FM Radio
c) A Solar Charged Flashlight
e) All Of The Above

So, What's Your Answer? Got It?

If you Answered "All Of The Above", You're RIGHT!

Better Check This Out - You're About To Fall In LOVE!

This fantastic little device makes the sun your NEW BEST FRIEND!

This little solar wonder does it all - flashlight, cell phone charger, and FM radio. And it's all powered with internal batteries that recharge with the sun!

Just set this little guy out to sunbathe for the afternoon and before you know it, it's fully charged and ready to save the day.

Think of it as a solar powered super hero.

First, and most important, it's a cell phone charger. You can either use the the USB charging cable that came with your phone OR just charge with one of the included plugs (they cover pretty much every type of "charge-via-USB" device on the planet)!

BAM - You're covered!

The brilliant thing is that it isn't strictly solar either - you can charge the internal batteries so even if it's dark you can still charge your phone. Great for those times you're stuck on a dark road with a bunch of crazy psychos (imagined or otherwise) after you - and your cell phone is dead!

It can literally save your life!

Plus, it can power up pretty much ANY device that charges via USB - so if you have an, umm, "emergency" involving a dead MP3 player, digital camera, or even iPad, this can save the day.

Next, it's a flashlight. I know, I know, a solar powered flashlight is almost a joke - until you realize that the sun charges the batteries during the day so you can use it at night. Great for camping, boating, your glove box, or even a zombie apocalypse.

Finally, it's also an FM radio, so you can get up to the minute news, weather, or dial in the tunes and dance on a picnic table. Your call.

Again, this is powered by the sun and then internal batteries when it gets dark.

And super-easy to use too - we've even had our tech support manager put together some easy to follow instructions that we'll send ya!

In all seriousness, think about how crucial this can be in an emergency. You can use it to charge your cell phone when the power's out, have a flashlight at your disposal, plus get the latest news.

From a natural disaster to just a camping trip, this baby saves the day! Grab one for each of your cars and one for home too!

It's a handful of solar goodness!
It's solar-ific!
It's the solar sensation of the decade!

Your price? Just $19.97 and US shipping is FREE! How cool is that? Grab 'em before they're gone:

Computers 101

Ken from Kimberley B.C. writes:

I bought a store built desk top recently loaded with a new copy of 7, and right from new, it doesn't want to stay in the sleep mode. I have gone through my power options and nothing seems to work. Even clicking on "sleep", it only shuts off for a few seconds, then comes back on. Help!

Answer: It's possible that a device or program running on your computer is waking it from slumber. Go to the Start Menu and select Control Panel.

From the Control Panel select Hardware and Sound.

Now select Power Options and choose Change when the computer sleeps.

When the new window opens, select Change advanced power settings.

About halfway down the list of options, you will find Sleep. Click on the plus sign beside it to get a list of further options. Now click the plus sign next to Allow wake timers.

Choose the option to Disable wake timers.

If that doesn't correct the issue, you may be able to find out what keeps waking up your PC by opening the Start Menu and pulling up the Command Prompt by typing cmd followed by hitting enter. Once you have the command prompt, type in powercfg -lastwake and pressing enter.

That should bring up a Wake History Count and tell you what keeps waking up your computer.

Hope this helps your computer with its insomnia.

On The Move

Your Cell Phone Is A Bacteria Farm

Prepare to be disturbed. Very disturbed. The photo below is of the kinds of bacteria that live on cell phones:

True that's after it was allowed to grow in a Petri dish for a few days, but still. YUCK.

A professor at The University Of Surrey asked students to make imprints of their mobile phones in a Petri dish to find out how much bacteria the phones carried around. Turns out they're good for storing a lot more than phone numbers, music and photos.

MS Word: Watermarks In Under A Minute

We've all seen documents with watermarks in the background – whether it's a word like "confidential" or a graphic – it's behind the main document and a much lighter shade or washout of colors.

msw_watermark_button

Adding a watermark to a document doesn't have to involve a lot of work with coloring and wrapping text to be in front of the word or picture… I suppose it could involve all that, but no way do I want to bother with all that unnecessary work.

Today's Feature

Peter from Kerrville, Texas writes:

My system runs Windows XP, Service Pack 3. In the "Windows" directory there is a sub-directory labelled "Installer". This directory is very large (2 GB) and contains many .msp and .msi files. My question is can any of these files be deleted in order to regain some disk space? Thank you in advance for your help and answer.

Answer:

The installer directory contains software patches and installers which may be critical to removing or updating certain pieces of software on your system. It is not a good idea to remove the files unless you know for sure they pertain to a program you no longer have installed. The good news is, if you're not running Office 2007, you can use an older utility from Microsoft called the Windows Installer Cleanup Tool.

The Guild Wars Chef

I confess, I'm a bit of a gamer. I love MMORPG's (massively multiplayer online role playing games) and I've been playing Guild Wars 2 since it was in beta. One of my favorite things to do in these kinds of games is to craft! Guild Wars 2 not only has an amazing crafting system, but their cooking craft actually has recipes that you'd want to eat. And I'm not the only one who feels this way.

Guild Wars Chef is a blog dedicated to recreating the cooking recipes within Guild Wars 2 in the real world with real ingredients. The blog author takes recipes from the game and creates recipes to match them in real life. So even if you don't like MMORPG's and have never heard of Guild Wars 2, there are still a bevvy of delicious recipes (both savory and sweet) awaiting you at this site. You can check out the first entry here to see what inspired the blog's author to try out the recipes and what their goals are.

Navigation is easy, just scroll down the page to go back through the previous entries. Use the Oudere Berichten (older entries) link to browse further back through the entries or you can use the side menu and check out the archives link. The entries only go back through January so you haven't missed out on much yet.

I can't wait to try out some of these recipes myself like the Cinnamon Pinwheels, Stuffed Peppers, and Front Line Stew. This site is a combination of video game geekery and tasty treats! Check it out today!

February Wallpaper Is Ready!

OK, I've been a bad photographer this month. I was actually out in the Southwest for a good part of it and I just didn't have time to get anything new ready for the wallpaper section. Bad Steve! However, there are three and a half pages over at the site to hold ya over :)

So, here are some favorite reruns I hope you enjoy:

Featured Wallpaper For February:

Storm Warning

I created this image one cold, lonely evening at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. The weather forecast was ominous - thunderstorms, 15 foot waves, and a gale warning already in full effect. I strapped on my backpack and made for Mosquito Beach. The glimmer of sunlight I saw for a few minutes on my way in was soon replaced...(More)

Wagner Falls

This is probably my favorite Michigan waterfall. Sure, there are bigger and taller falls, but none quite as charming if you ask me. The hike to this falls is grueling. You have to battle... (more)

Yelling Geese

These two Canada Geese had been just kind of standing side by side when all the sudden the one on the right let the one on the left have it! Frankly, I'm not sure what instigated the whole thing, but my bet is... (More)
