The McIntire Department of Music presents a Distinguished Major Voice Recital by Brianna Meese. Meese is a fourth year student from Franklin Lakes, NJ who has been studying voice under Pamela Beasley for the past four years. Her recital will feature pieces from Purcell, Bernstein, Strauss, and Donizetti and highlight her love for French repertoire with a set of romantic Reynaldo Hahn art songs and two pieces from Delibes' Lakme. These pieces will include the virtuosic Bell Song, and the charming Flower Duet, on which she will be joined by third year soprano, Sarah Sherman. All of these pieces will be accompanied by Karen Dalton on piano. This recital is supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund.

18th century Haydn meets 20th century Gershwin in the most kaleidoscopic concert of the Charlottesville & University Symphony Orchestra’s Musical Kaleidoscope season. Haydn’s Symphony No. 104, dubbed “London,” and a nod to Gershwin’s A Foggy Day (in London Town) are fused in the world premiere performance of Antonio Garcia’s London Town Fantasy. The program also includes Brahms’s Variations on a Theme by Haydn and Danish composer Launy Grondahl’s Concerto for Trombone and Orchestra featuring Nathan Dishman as the trombone soloist.

Seung-Hye Kim will perform new music composed by UVA composers. Kim is a composer and pianist whose interests include acoustic and electroacoustic music, musical gestures, and performative agency. She has performed traditional and contemporary repertoire at various concerts and important conferences such as Seoul International Computer Music Festival and Florida Electroacoustic Music Festival. Thus recital will include compositions by Jon Bellona, Kevin Davis, Erik DeLuca, Ryan Maguire, Maxwell Tfirn, Paul Turowski, Kristina Warren, Judith Shatin, and Seung-Hye Kim.

The McIntire Department of Music presents a Distinguished Major Flute Recital by Gloria Chen. Gloria is a fourth year Music and Biology double major giving this performance as the pinnacle of her studies with Angela Kelly and Kelly Sulick here at the University of Virginia. The program will incorporate various musical periods with works by Johann Sebastian Bach, Claude-Paul Taffanel, Ian Clarke and American composers Arthur Foote and Aaron Copland. Foote’s A Night Piece will feature a string quartet with Jacob Monroe, Kelsey Shea on violin, Michael Lankenau on viola and Michael Dettmar on cello. Other pieces will be in collaboration with pianist Shelby Sender. The recital is free and supported by the Charles S. Roberts Scholarship Fund.

Philip Glass Residency

The UVa Arts Board presents a residency by American composer and pianist Philip Glass, Artist-in-Residence! From film screenings to lectures, there is something for everyone. "Ode to Glass," featuring student performances by the New Music Ensemble, University Chamber Singers and MICE (Mobile Interactive Computer Ensemble). Each ensemble will perform selections of Philip Glass's works. Glass will then present a public lecture on creativity and collaboration in the arts following the concert, which will culminate with a question-and-answer session led by Music Department Chair Richard Will. To end off the residency, Glass will perform a solo piano recital (tickets for this recital have all been reserved).

Bill Cole is a master improviser on didgeridoo and exotic reed instruments. He will be joined by bassist and UVA alum Lisa Mezzacappa, New York City saxophonist Ras Moshe, and lizette santiago on percussion and theremin. Graduate Student Sarah O'Halloran Music Drama Stitching Performed at Dorothy Betts Marvin Theater McIntire Department of Music graduate student Sarah O’Halloran is one of GWU’s Artists-in-Residence for 2013/2014. During her residency she is working on a music drama called Stitching, which will be performed by GWU faculty and students on April 4th and 5th at 7.30pm at the Dorothy Betts Marvin Theater.
Stitching is a collaboration between composer Sarah O’Halloran and playwright Colin Stanley Bell. It tells the story of Lana, a teenager, who has lived with her grandmother since her mother’s death. Isolated from their community Lana and Nana share a highly imaginative world, full of fantastic stories that protect them from harsh realities. Recently Nana has become frail and her memory is failing, so Lana cares for her. Fearing being separated by the authorities they have kept Nana’s problems secret, but people are starting to notice. Lana resolves to find Nana’s memories and keep them safe. This quest takes Lana on an interplanetary adventure, through time and space. The story is told through narration, songs, instrumental music, and projected images. | |
