Quick Tip

Scammers Target System Mechanic Users

Iolo, the company behind System Mechanic has issued a warning to consumers. Scammers posing as representatives of the company are calling people at home and saying they have been alerted to errors, trouble signals or malware on the computer and need to gain access to it.

This scam is very similar to the one where crooks use Microsoft's name. Click here to read an article on that scam.

hackerguy

Crooks either want to gain access to your information or trick you into spending hundreds of dollars on unnecessary services.

Iolo wants to make it clear that they do not make unsolicited calls to their customers and they don't have the ability to monitor your PC. It's highly unlikely that customer support for any product would call your home. You call them, they don't call you.

Recover FIles From Avast SafeZone: Part 2

In Part 1 of this article we looked at how to locate files that were sent to the Avast SafeZone. SafeZone is a special browser within Avast's Internet Security suite designed to protect you malicious downloads, keyloggers and malware. The browser is sandboxed, meaning it's isolated from the rest of your computer. Read the first part to learn how to find those files. In this tip, we'll explain how to recover them.

Recovering Your Files

Safe Mode opens a minimal version of your desktop. Don't panic when you don't see your background. It will return once you restart your computer.

Open any folder on your computer to open a Windows Explorer window. I opened my user folder from the Start Menu. You could open Documents, Music, Photos or any other folder.

Open Explorer

Select your main hard drive folder, which is typically your C: drive in the left column. Double-click the Avast! Sandbox folder in the right column.

Open Avast Sandbox

Next, open the first or newest folder listed. The name is a series of letters and numbers. The date on the folder should be the same as the date of your downloads.

Open First Folder

Open the following series of folders to access your downloads – sfzone – C – Users – your usernameDownloads. Right click the download you wish to keep and select Copy.

Copy File

Right click any empty area of your desktop, which will be black, and select Paste to move the file to your desktop. Repeat the process for any downloads you want to keep.

Paste File

When you're done, restart your computer to return to your normal desktop. If you're using Windows 8 or 8.1, go back into msconfig, select the Boot tab and uncheck the Safe boot box. Press OK and select Restart to restart your computer normally.

Your downloaded files are now safely on your desktop. Even if you change the settings in SafeZone, most downloads are still sandboxed and require the above steps to retrieve.

From The Archives

Dave asks:

I find it a pain to copy, paste, and delete files one by one. Is there a way to make it easier?

Hi Dave!

It is very easy to move and delete multiple files at once. There are even multiple ways to do this.

Let's start with a little vocabulary.

Highlight – Clicking on a file or picture so that it is selected, usually outlined in blue or black.

Copy – When you copy something, whether it is text or pictures, you keep the original but make another one, much like a copy machine.

Cut – When you cut something, it removes the word or file from the original location, like when you cut something out of a piece of paper.

Paste – Allows you to place whatever you copied or cut to a new location.

Drag and drop – Clicking on a file and holding the left mouse button, allowing you to move a file from one place to another.

OK, let's say we want to copy multiple files from one folder to another. To start, my suggestion is to have both folders open side by side.

Then, you need to highlight all the files you want to copy. If they are all in a row, you can simply drag your mouse over them.

However, my favorite trick to copy multiple files is to...

Today's Feature

Use Puush To Share Screenshots

In part 1 of this article, I showed you how to download puush and the three ways that puush can take screenshots. So, how does puush make sharing screenshots a breeze? Let's take a look.

Automatic Links

When you take a screenshot using any of the methods listed in part 1, the puush icon on your taskbar will display a notification, as well as make a chiming sound.

push9

If you click the notification when it appears, puush will automatically open your default browser and display the picture. Simply copy the link as it is displayed, and you can paste it into an email, document, or wherever you wish the image to go. You can also save it to your desktop for local use.

push10

All images are also displayed within a menu accessed by right clicking the puush icon. Here, you can see how many times an image has been viewed, as well as viewing the image yourself and copying a link to your clipboard for easy linking.

push11

Other files

Puush does not stop at screenshots, however. There are two more ways to upload non-screenshot data onto puush,

The first is to upload data from your clipboard. When you copy (CTRL+C) something, whether it is text or an image, it is stored on an internal, temporary clipboard on your computer. By pressing CTRL+SHIFT+5, puush will automatically upload whatever is on your clipboard into the cloud, whether it is an image or text.

push12

push13

The second is the ability to upload any file you like, using CTRL+SHIFT+U. While puush is not classed as a means of sharing files between people, you can share lightweight files like images and text documents using puush. Pressing the key combination opens up a...

Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap 2

This site offers you the second half of the recipes from the Great Food Blogger Cookie Swap of 2013! They had so many entries last year they had to split the recipe round about between their blogs!

Since sharing the first of the recipes with you I had a chance to try out the chai cookies I mentioned last time. They were amazing.

From this site I'm trying out Bourbon, Brown Butter, and Vanilla Bean Shortbread Cookies and Festive Fig Rolls with Orange, Honey, and Cinnamon. The latter look like scrumptious, fancier fig newtons.

Navigation is pretty much the same as at the other site. There's an introductory paragraph that explains what the swap was, and then you scroll down to the amazing recipes!

Just click on the thumbnail of the recipe you want to try and you'll be whisked away to the blog where that recipe is hosted!

With this many options you're sure to find some new favorite cookies! Go check them out today!

One More Big Deal

Hey everyone, it's me, and I just found something REALLY cool, so I'm trying to get this out to you immediately!

Okay, so these awesome lights just came into the office and I'm blown away! My supplier sent them special order knowing how much we like anything that lights up over here... and they guessed right that I'd love these too!

First off, you just have to see them, because it's such an incredible "duh!" design that I can't believe I've never seen before!

See here:

It's a mobile light shaped like your typical lightbulb!

Except this one is packed with a CRAZY powerful LED, comes with a 2" carabiner, and runs off batteries so it's portable!

There's a reason they hang lightbulbs up in rooms and not flashlights - the bulb design spreads out light and gives you a wider field of illumination! One light bulb can light up an entire room that would take 10-15 flashlights aimed all over the place!

That's why you're going to love this thing.

Turn it on and EVERYTHING around you will light up. Even lanterns can't compete with the standard bulb design - it's simply the best!

With a rubberized body you can hold it just like a standard mobile light, or you can use the carabiner to hold it up somewhere!

You can actually use this to give any room an instant light that functions just like the real thing (without all the wiring and electric work!)

And the best part is they're ONLY $3.97!

These actually COMPLETELY sold out last week, so I've been begging my supplier to send us more... and they did! I don't know how long this second shipment will last, though, so make sure you get yours before they disappear - AGAIN!
