Quick Tip

Enable Autofill in Firefox Address bar

Somewhere along the line, Mozilla dropped the autofill feature from Firefox. That was when you'd type an address in the address bar (and if you'd been to that particular site before), the rest of the address would pop up. Like this:

With autofill:

Without autofill:
image

Here's how you can re-enable autofill in Firefox in a few easy steps – one of which requires a little courage.

First, open up Firefox and in the address bar type: about:config and press Enter.

Now, a warning window is going to show up, that looks a lot like this:
image

Click "I'll be careful, I promise". Yes, trust me. We're only going into the configuration for one specific change and nothing more. Let this be a warning, however, that the area we're about to go in is not to be entered lightly.

Locate browser.urlbar.autoFill

Double-click
it, changing the value to true, and restart Firefox.

Should you ever want to change it back, just repeat these steps and change the value to false again.

Computers 101

Susan from FL writes:

I have taken some videos with my laptop's webcam and have wanted to send them to my family to see, however, when I try to attach them to the emails it tells me the file is too large to send, is there anything or anyway to get them attached to the emails?

Thank you!

Sending video as an e-mail attachment can be a problem, as most e-mail providers limit the size of attachments. Depending on your provider, the limit may be as small as 2 megabytes, so what do you do? The best solution I have found is to upload the video to YouTube and use a little known feature of YouTube known as "privacy settings".

When you upload a video (you can even record directly from your webcam on YouTube) you will be presented with a screen to name your file and add a description and to the right is a drop down menu for privacy settings.

Privacy settings allow you to select if the video is public, unlisted or private. Once you make a selection and click save YouTube will set the video to the setting you've selected.

  • Public can be seen by anyone and is searchable/viewable on your profile.
  • Unlisted can only be seen by people who have a direct link to the video and will not appear in searches.
  • Private is only viewable by people with a specific e-mail address or YouTube ID.

Once you upload, go to the video and you will see a web address next to Video URL. Type that address in to an e-mail and tell someone about what the video is, (along with your message) and click send. You won't need to worry about attachment size limits or long downloads for your friends, and they can view the video whenever they like by clicking on the link.

Try it out with the sample video I posted. Here is the direct URL (without it you wouldn't be able to view it!)http://youtu.be/zWvtYZJsnRY

Android Back-up Tips

If you want to update the firmware of your Android phone, it's important to back up your contacts and apps. Everything else is individual, like sms messages, calendar and notes. In fact, you have the option of syncing your contacts, calendar and notes to Google already, so you don't have to worry about that. Still, things can go wrong if you rely too much on Google for syncing everything – and then again, what about backing up and restoring apps?

Here are a few ways to go about backing up your Android phone before you press the panic button.

Undiscovered Firefox Tricks

There are some lesser-known features in Mozilla Firefox that can make your Internet browsing experience much more enjoyable. I'll admit, that even I didn't know about these features up until about a week ago. So let's explore together, shall we?

Today's Feature

Photoshop Elements: The Basics

I love free stuff, but there are two programs that we've always purchased for our home computers; Microsoft Office, and Photoshop Elements. This is not because they're better than their free counterparts but, over the years, a certain familiarity has developed. Also, they each represent the industry standard, so a working knowledge can be an asset.

Photoshop Elements is the bare-bones version of Photoshop. While it's more limited than its big brother–in addition to simple photo editing–it offers many of the more complex features found in the larger program, and the similarities between the two make the transition from one to the other (relatively) easy. As a result, since many employers require some Photoshop skills—as long as those requirements don't include a thorough knowledge of the more elaborate full version–experience with Elements may be enough to help land a position (it's worked for me). An additional reason to consider Elements is its price, which is roughly 10%–15% the cost of Photoshop. If you'd like to take it for a test drive, download the free trial here.

Amanda's Coolsite

Moodstream

Moodstream is a fascinating mood music player! You get three streams of input – music, images, and video, and then you get to customize them to your mood.

When the site loads, click the Start Streaming button, then click the X to get rid of the pop up.

On the top left of the page is the customization menu, where you can set the mood (Happy/Sad, Calm/Lively, Humorous/Serious, Warm/Cool), choose how the images transition in and out, select whether you want more or less black and white image, and more or less music with vocals. You can also set the volume control and Image Duration.

Not sure what mood you want? Well, you can also select to listen and watch through the presets wheel. It gives you the options of the following moods: Excite, Inspire, Stabilize, Simplify, Intensify, or Refresh. Once you've customized the controls to your liking or selected a preset, click the Refresh Stream button.

It will now start streaming to your settings! Sit back, watch, listen, and enjoy!

Polar Bear Taking A Break

This lovely lady was wandering along the shores of Hudson Bay near Churchill, Canada when we spotted her from our Polar Rover. We quickly backed to her position - and she decided it was time to lay down and take a break! She would occasionally look around, check us out, lay her head down, look the other way, and so forth. So, we'd wait on the back of the Polar Rover (in -30F windchill) and ...(More)
