Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! Bud from Nicholasville KY writes: If I backup only the Windows folder on my PC and then restore it, will I have a working PC? Backing up your Windows folder, (usually in c:windows) is not enough to restore your computer should the PC's hard drive have mechanical problems. The best way to restore a computer back to a previous state is to use backup software that supports disk imaging. Disk Imaging software will make an exact duplicate of all of the information, files and settings needed to start and run your computer (along with all of your files), then package them into a single file to place on a backup drive. Windows 7 includes the ability to make image files natively, but I recommend Laplink Disk Image as it supports some advanced functions, like mounting images (so you can restore individual files), hardware independent restore, and comes with a bootable CD to let you restore the image file without having to reinstall windows first. If you don't want to backup your PC using an imaging program, the best bet is to just backup your personal files and should your PC crash, to reinstall all the applications from the CDs or redownload them. Your personal files are usually located in c:usersyourname (in Windows Vista/7) and in c:documents and settingsyourname, but there can be other personal files stored in program folders and inside of programs configuration files. This is why imaging programs are so good to use. I highly recommend purchasing one. ~Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

How To Add A Printer To Your Mac What I love about using a Mac is that I can connect to any printer I want and print in about 30 seconds no software to install or 45 minute wait to install the drivers. Apple, always thinking, put some software on the Mac which makes it compatible with almost any printer you'll need to use. This tutorial is the same for both wired, wireless and network printers. If you are using a wired printer, make sure it is plugged in to your Mac. If you are using a wireless printer, make sure it is switched on and both your Mac and the printer are connected to the network. If you have a printer on your network, which may be connected through an Ethernet cable, make sure that it is connected to your network and switched on as well. To setup a printer on your Mac: First, open system preferences on your Mac. Select Print & Scan from the menu: Select the plus (+) sign on the left hand side of printer window: You will then see your Mac search for active printers that are either connected to your Mac or on the network. Once it has found your printer select it and press the add button: Once that has been added, you are ready to start printing from your Mac. Easy as that! So next time you want to print something, select file from the top menu, then print, from the drop down menu which says "Printer" you will be able to select the printer that you have just added to your Mac and then print directly to it without the hassle of drivers or software to install. ~Alex Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Close Background iPad Programs Guess who loves their new iPad? Also, guess who started poking around and saw a significant decrease in performance in his new iPad mere hours after booting it up? See, by default the iPad will keep apps open in the background and while this is a boon to productivity ( or bane, depending on how you look at it ), eventually stuff starts getting a little laggy. So, here's how you close some of those apps running in the background. (Want these tips in their entirety? Sign up for Premium!) The Girl Effect I love when I find sites to share with you that raise awareness to issues around the globe. The Girl Effect is a site dedicated to getting girls in developing countries the education and visibility that they need to be successful in life, and end poverty for themselves. Did you know that less than .02 of each humanitarian aid dollar is directly invested in girls in developing countries? Yet, if they received aid that was directly invested in educating and preparing them to work, they would be more likely to invest 95% of their income back into their family. Conversely, statistics show that boys only return 35% of their income to their families. When you get to the site, I'd recommend you start with the Why Girls section. Watch the short videos (click play on the video and then you can click 2 and watch the second video in the same manner), then check out the facts below the video. Next, you can click the link near the bottom of the page that reads Get the Latest Facts, which will whisk you away to an awesome infographic. Then, you just have to click the more button to expand it. You can also find the infographic on the Explore tab. You'll also find videos (interviews, information, etc), statistics, and information on how you can help in this section. Navigating around it is a little bit different. You can either click things with your mouse, or you can use the arrows on the screen to navigate back and forth. To expand things, click the more buttons on the different squares, and less to close it. You can watch presentations of data as well! Most importantly, I hope that after today, these girls will no longer be invisible. ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com

WOW - This is so COOL! (Sorry for yelling, but WOW! - I'm REALLY excited about this one!) We've FINALLY found the perfect scanner for all those prints you have laying around the house! You know how it is - you probably have stacks, albums, and boxes just overflowing with photos from your old film camera. Wouldn't it be GREAT to free them from their paper prison and transfer them to digital before they fade away (or get ruined)? Wouldn't it be incredible to be able to EASILY scan those photos and have them at your fingertips in DIGITAL format? Think about it - you could print as many more as you'd like - no negative required! You could e-mail them, post them on the web, edit 'em, or burn to CD for safe keeping! WOW! How did we get along before digital? And, wouldn't it be fantastic if there was a high quality - but SUPER-EASY - way to do it? There is!!! Yeah, yeah, I know what you're thinking, "Arrgh - I hate scanning!" After all, up till now, scanning photos into your computer was a royal pain in the you-know-what! You had to buy an expensive scanner, install finicky drivers (and fight for hours to get them to work), and struggle with buggy software that only a digital imaging expert could understand! Oh, and then on top of it, it was time consuming and the scans sucked! YUK! No wonder no one likes to scan! However, that little nightmare ends RIGHT NOW! We just discovered the most amazing little photo scanner on the PLANET! How would you like a scanner SO easy to use that it actually made scanning in photos - dare I say it - fun? (Check out the video below for a demo) Then you GOTTA try this absolutely incredible photo scanner! Scan photos from wallet size to 4x6! (Note - normally the snapshots you got back from the lab when you had a roll of file developed were either 3x5 or 4x6 in size, so this scanner covers everything.) Let's start with the drivers and software - WOW - there isn't any! In fact, you don't even need to plug this baby into a computer to use it - it includes an SD card that plugs into the back of the unit to store the images you scan! Think about that - you could sit in front of the TV and scan stacks of photos! How cool is that??? (You should really see the video demo below) What about actually using it?
You just feed a photo in the scanner, it scans it (takes about 6 seconds), and, well, that's it! The photo is automatically saved to the memory card as a standard JPEG! Once you're done scanning, just plug the scanner into your computer via the included USB cable and copy the photos to your hard drive! It's REALLY that simple! (NOTE - there are some other options too - you can plug the scanner into the computer and scan that way - just as easy. OR you can pop the SD card out of the scanner and use your computer's card reader to get the photos!) Don't take my word for it - check out this demo we put together and see for yourself! And just think - you don't need to install a SINGLE driver or piece of software to make it work! Now THAT'S the way to scan baby! Plus, the photos look absolutely AMAZING! The high resolution scans are fantastic quality and the color is just as eye-poppin' as the original photo! You'll be totally BLOWN AWAY when you see the images this produces! And it does everything automatically - just feed the photos in and the rest happens like magic! It's REALLY time to stop putting this off - those old photos are fading even as you read this! SAVE THEM NOW by scanning them into your computer. Turning them to digital literally stops the aging process and preserves them forever! Don't have your old photos... but still have the negatives? NO PROBLEM! It has a special adapter to let you scan the negatives too! WOW! And when you add in the fact that it's a 5-in-1 card reader? Well, now that's just icing on top of the cake! Why let all those memories fade away when scanning them is so easy? Hey, plus your scanned images can't be scratched, ripped, wrinkled, or torn! There has never been a faster, simpler way to get your snapshots into your computer!
