57th Inauguration and the National Portrait Gallery You may not get to shake hands with President Obama this weekend, but you can see him up close in the Portrait Gallery’s special installation of two large scale tapestry portraits by Chuck Close. Up through March 3, the diptych has been generously loaned to the museum by Ian and Annette Cumming. Close created these through Polaroid images that were then made into jacquard tapestries. See these stunning portraits on the second floor of the museum. Just on view for inauguration weekend, see the Portrait Gallery’s hand-finished collage, stencil, and acrylic on paper of Obama known as the Hope portrait, by Los Angeles street artist Shepherd Fairey. This portrait is a gift of the Heather and Tony Podesta Collection in honor of Mary K. Podesta. Here are some activities happening this weekend at the museum: Portrait Discovery Kits Saturday, Jan. 19, 1 to 4 p.m. Portrait Discovery Kits are an interactive and imaginative way to learn more about people who are in the National Portrait Gallery and their contributions to American history. Take a self-guided tour, use the “Seek and Find” cards, “Portrait Detective” and “Historian Guides,” and a “Compare and Contrast” activity using a doll. Kits are available just outside of the National Portrait Gallery’s education center, room E151, on the first floor. Kits need to be returned prior to 4 p.m. This program is sponsored in part by the Reinsch Family Education Endowment. Additionally there will be ongoing docent tours of the museum's permanent collection exhibitions including "America's Presidents," and special presidential themed activities for kids. Meet the Presidents and First Ladies Saturday, Jan.19, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Take a moment to mingle with the Washingtons and shake hands with the Lincolns at the National Portrait Gallery this weekend. George and Martha Washington will appear from 1:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m., and Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln will be on hand to shake hands from 3:00-6:00 p.m. each day. Join in on short conversations and watch short vignettes in the exhibition, “America’s Presidents”. Portrait Story Day: Meet the Presidents Saturday, Jan. 19, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 20, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. Monday, Jan. 21, 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. First floor, education center, room E151 For the young and young at heart, drop in to listen to stories about America’s presidents and then create your own presidential portrait.
