THE 2013 JAZZ FEST LINEUP!

 

Mac Attack! Fleetwood Mac are among the just-announced headliners at Jazz Fest 2013.

The talent lineup for the 2013 edition of Jazz Fest dropped Thursday morning, January 17, and we've got all the deets.

 

This year's headliners include (the much predicted) Fleetwood Mac, Willie Nelson, New Orleans-raised hip-hop darling Frank Ocean, Billy Joel, Austin axeman Gary Clark Jr., Jazz Fest 2012 cancellation John Mayer, Band of Horses, the Joshua Redman Quartet, jam band mainstays the Dave Matthews Band, punk legend Patti Smith, Hall & Oates, the Black Keys, nu soul chanteuse Jill Scott, Widespread Panic and many more.

The talent for the Young Leadership Council's 14th annual Wednesday at the Square concert series has been announced.

Folks gathered at the Old U.S. Mint Wednesday night for OffBeat's annual Best of the Beat Business Awards, recognizing the dedicated movers and shakers in the local music industry. Click here for a complete list of winners -- our congrats to all.  
The Little Gem Saloon opened its doors in late December, housing a swanky restaurant and jazz club in the S. Rampart structure where legends such as Buddy Bolden and Jelly Roll Morton played. Gregory Porter will sing at Dillard University in a Jazz Journey concert Jan. 18.

OTHER EVENTS OF NOTE

 
* The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will present a Jazz Journey concert to kick off Martin Luther King Jr. Weekend on Friday, January 18 at Dillard University, with singers Gregory Porter and Barbara Morrison, plus trumpeter Porgy Jones. Admission is free. 
 

* Perennial local faves the 610 Stompers throw their Third Annual Sweet 610 Debutante Ball Friday, January 18 at the Sugar Mill. 

 

* The Loyola Opera Theatre presents the comic operetta Candide -- a new production that features the largest orchestra ever used in a Loyola opera --- January 18 and 20 at the Louis J. Roussel Performance Hall. 

 

* It's time once again for Vince Vance's Louisiana Legends: Vince's Annual 39th Birthday Show Saturday, January 19 at Rock 'N' Bowl, where the show namesake and his Valiants will be joined by Irma Thomas, Meschiya Lake, Ingrid Lucia, Deborah "Tomato" Krantz and Aaron Foret

 

* The New Orleans Jazz Orchestra's Spring 2013 Hometown Concert Series launches this Saturday, January 19 at House of Blues with a Tribute to Ray Charles by Irvin Mayfield and the NOJO. 

 

* New radio talk show Loisirslit presents the first Treme Benefit Concert this Saturday, January 19 at Café Istanbul, with proceeds to support literacy efforts in the Treme area. Performers will include Glenn David Andrews, and the Hot 8 and Free Agent brass bands. 

 

Halifax/Montreal-based duo Purity Ring brings its atmospheric brew of dream pop, hip-hop and synth washes to Maison January 21.

 

The Envisioning Louisiana concert, a Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra performance sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and in collaboration with the Historic New Orleans Collection, takes place January 23 at St. Louis Cathedral. 

 

CARNIVAL TIME

 

Carnival season continues with Krewe du Vieux rolling through the streets of the Marigny and French Quarter this Saturday, January 19. After the raucous procession, head to Siberia for the Celebration of Grandeur, the post-parade after party for Krewe Delusion (ruled this year by Cheeky Blakk) featuring Egg Yolk Jubile, Dirty Mouth and DJ Strachan, with a Royal Tableaux at midnight. 

 

Prior to the parade's start, OffBeat's own John Swenson will be signing copies of his book New Atlantis, and Michael Patrick Welch copies of his Y'All's Problem and New Orleans: The Underground Guide, at 5 p.m. Saturday, January 19 at Faubourg Marigny Art & Books.

 

NEW BIG FREEDIA DOC

  

Just as Big Freedia's 2013 national tour gets underway this week comes a new 30-minute documentary about the New Orleans bounce queen, courtesy of Pitchfork TV. Check it out
