Quick Tip

Putting The Moves On Your MacBook

When Mac users were introduced to OS X Mountain Lion, we gained the capability to be a little more hands-on with our MacBooks or trackpads through Gestures. While this seems like a small change, I can say from personal experience that getting familiar with these moves can definitely help increase your productivity.

Here are a few of my favorites:

  • Pinch to see all of your safari tabs at once
  • Spread your thumb and three fingers apart to view your desktop
  • Tap a word with three fingers for the definition of that word

There are quite a bit more. To see how they're performed, open trackpad, mouse preferences or check out Apple's description.

Computers 101

Ken from Greer,SC writes:

Is there any way to create a desktop shortcut to put my computer to sleep? I use Windows 7 Home Premium.

Answer:

A shortcut to put your computer to sleep is a fantastic idea and it's pretty simple to do. Start by opening notepad (from the Start Menu click Accessories then Notepad) or search for notepad. In notepad type in the following lines:

powercfg -h off

rundll32.exe powrprof.dll,SetSuspendState 0,1,0

powercfg -h on

Go to File then click Save As. Click the drop down box next to "Save as type" and select All Files. Select the desktop from the favorites menu on the left and type the file name in the "File name:" box sleep.cmd and click save.

You will now have an icon on your desktop which is named sleep. When you double click the icon, it will put your computer to sleep. If it does not put it to sleep but instead hibernates the computer, you just need to set the program to run as administrator. Right click on sleep and click properties and click the checkbox next to "Run as Administrator" and click ok.

Clear Android Applications Cache to Improve Performance
Has your Android phone visibly slowed down? Is there a lag? If yes, free up some phone memory and you'll notice a drastic improvement in speed and performance. In this tip, I'll show you how to improve the performance of an Android phone by clearing the cache memory. I've used the most commonly found version of Android, 2.2, to illustrate the steps.

Step 1: Access Settings.

There are two ways of accessing Settings. The simplest is to press the menu key on the phone. Typically, it is the left corner key on Android phones. After you press this key, some options appear. Tap Settings.

Access the Settings menu.

Cheryl from Caldwell Oh. writes:

I have heard that you should shut your monitor off but leave the CPU on, what is the reasoning for this?

Hi, Cheryl. This is actually a question that has plagued geeks practically since the beginning of computers – and if you ask three geeks, odds are that you'll get three different answers. Since you asked this geek, here's my answer…

The idea of turning monitors off when not in use goes back to the days of monochrome CRT's, PSS (Pre Screen Saver). These things suffered a malady that has returned to plague plasma TV owners called "burn-in". That's when an image is left on a screen for a long period of time, it literally "burns" into the screen. Here's a pic of an old Pac-man video arcade screen that has burned in.

How Does A Computer Understand Speech?

Answer:

Software like Dragon Natural Speaking or services like Google Voice Search or Apple's Siri Digital Assistant allow you to speak to a computer or smartphone and have the computer understand what you are saying. How does this work though?

Amanda's Coolsite

It Can Wait

One of my largest pet peeves while driving is people who text and drive, followed closely by folks who refuse to use their turn signals. My sister is a repeat offender, and I've driven behind her warily watching as she drifted in and out of her lane because she was distracted. I'm now terrified for her life anytime she gets behind the wheel of her car with her phone in tow.

Statistically speaking, people who text and drive are 23 times as likely to get into a car accident than people who do not. It might also be illegal where you live. In Ohio, if you are stopped for a moving violation and they ascertain it was due to your cellphone use, you'll be given an extra penalty and fined accordingly.

So what's the site about? Well, the site encourages you to pledge that you won't text and drive. It also promotes driving safety, with hopes of reaching teens who are learning to drive and getting them on board with the "no texting and driving" pledge.

I love the Video section where you can find PSAs created by teens for their peers, PSAs featuring the celebrities teens look up to, and videos from those who have lost someone because they were texting and driving. There's even a ten minute Text While Driving Documentary that reviews multiple cases where texting while driving killed the driver, injured passengers, or made victims out of bicyclists/pedestrians.

In the Your Stories section you can read why people are taking the pledge and share you own reasons for taking the pledge by filling out the form provided on the page.

Want more information about the statistics that have been found about texting and driving? Just check out this infographic! I think you'll be surprised at what you find, I know I was. I was also disheartened.

Take the pledge today because no text message, video, or notification is worth your life.
