How To Relieve Computer Eye Strain In 20 Seconds Do your eyes get tired after spending a lot of time looking at a computer or phone screen? The Centers For Disease Control says it could be because you're so involved with your Words With Friends Game, that you are forgetting to blink. The agency tasked with looking after the nation's health says forgetting to blink causes fatigue. So, don't forget to blink! The CDC also suggests you follow what they call the 20-20-20 rule. About every 20 minutes, look away at something about 20 feet in front of you. Keep your eyes on that object for 20 seconds. My eyes were actually getting a little tired while I wrote this, so I gave it a try. Looking away at something for 20 seconds, really did make them feel better. So, If your eyes are feeling strained, give it a try! - Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Windows 8's Sorta-Start Menu So you've purchased a new computer or upgraded your existing computer to Windows 8 and discovered the Start Menu has been removed. You can use the new Windows 8 interface to search for programs pretty easily, but wouldn't it be nice if some part of the Start Menu lived on? Well good news everyone, a severely trimmed down version is back! Now I know what your thinking "Uh oh, I don't like the sound of that" and while it's not the full Start Menu we all know and love, it does provide quick access to a lot of Windows functions. To access it in Desktop view, simply move your mouse to the lower left corner of the screen and an icon with the new Start interface will appear. Once the icon appears click the right mouse button. You will be presented with a menu once you right click with the following options: This interface is a long way from the power of the traditional Start Menu but many of the functions including quick access to control panel, run, power options and device manager make life a lot easier. Don't be confused though: the first option, Programs & Features, is not a list of programs you can run but the old uninstall programs/turn windows features on or off feature. -Tim Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Diane Spiers from England writes: Recently you gave directions for "manual cleaning of the temp. directory." Can you please tell me what a temp. directory is and if I really need to give it a cleaning? Hi, Diane, You have an excellent question! The temp directory is the location on your computer to which all temporary files are saved. Temporary files are files saved by your web browser or another program in order to speed up that program's performance. One good example are the temporary files created when you browse the internet. If you go to, say, WorldStart.com, typically you'll access the same initial page. A copy of this page will be saved to your computer so that the next time you go to that page, it will pop right up for you with little to no delay. Your web browser will do this for many of the pages you access on the internet. Often the files are deleted by the program that created them. However, if a program ends in error, has a component that is not working properly, or any other irregularity, these files are left in the temporary drive. Others are retained simply for efficiency or to speed access to pages you have already visited on the web... For more of this tip - click on WorldStart!
Camera Codec Pack - Preview Raw Images RAW, which is a popular file format for higher-end digital cameras and digital SLR cameras, contains the raw sensor information without any modifications made to the file. The major problem with the format however, is that unlike JPG images which you can preview in Windows Explorer, RAW images usually show up as a generic icon and not a preview image.
Microsoft's Camera Codec Pack will allow you to preview these images so you don't need to open every file individually to see what is in the photo. Here's how to get it... Want more of this tip?
