Kluge Scholar Manuel Castells Receives Prestigious Balzan Prize

Kluge Scholar Manuel Castells Receives Prestigious Balzan Prize—Dispatch November 22, 2013 Sociologist Manuel Castells, member of the Library of Congress Scholars Council and past chairholder at The John W. Kluge Center, has been awarded the prestigious 2013 Balzan Prize by the International Balzan Prize Foundation. The prize was announced in September and awarded last week in Bern, Switzerland. Castells was cited by the Foundation for his “wide-ranging and imaginative thinking through of the implications of the great technological changes of our time.” Since the 1990s, Castells has researched the connections linking the digital revolution with profound social, cultural, economic and political changes, and has proposed influential theories on the new global information society. Kluge Center in 2012, continuing his research on communication technology. He also delivered a lecture on his latest book, “Networks of Outrage and Hope: Social Movements in the Internet Age,” while in residence at the Center. The International Balzan Prize Foundation promotes culture, the sciences and the most meritorious initiatives in the cause of humanity, peace and fraternity among peoples.
