Quick Tip

Lorine writes:

For sometime I've been trying to write to see if you all can help me. I have 2 questions: 1. When I open my gmail acount I keep getting a yellow bar saying that I need to update to a modern browser, now I have vista and I'm using IE9, I have the latest version but this bar won't go away. 2. In my default programs none of mine show up, why is this and how do I fix it. I have gone in and reset all my programs and still they won't show up.

Lorine, you may be stuck with that more modern browser error as long as you're using IE9. It's not the optimum browser for Gmail. However, you could choose to switch Firefox or Google Chrome.

For the empty default programs issue, I would suggest trying a system restore. If that doesn't help with the issue, we may have to look into some more complicated stuff. Let us know if it helps.

Knock-Out Price For 4 Gigs Of Storage!

All I can say is WOW! Did we score a deal for you! One of our suppliers gave us an absolutely mind-blowing deal on some 4GB TwistTurn Lexar Flash Drives!

We're talking a whoppin' 4 GB worth of storage for less than $5 !

But there's a catch -

The promotion is only for a limited time - Once our cost goes up, your cost will go up! If you want an amazing, 4GB flash drive for $4.97 , I'd high-tail it on over to the site as soon as you read this!! Get your orders in while you can!!

We all know flash drives are probably the best invention since the internet, but when you think what about you can store on these 4GB drives, it's really somethin'!

Think about this - these can hold the same amount of data as not 1, not 3, but 6 - count 'em 6 - CD-ROMS!

Heck, we're talking enough storage for 600 12MP images from your digital camera, 1000 MP3s, or 80,000 typical office documents! That's a lot of data!!

PLUS it's small and easy to take along - this thing isn't even as long as your index finger!

No cap to lose either!! Just flip this baby closed and it's ready to be stored in your pocket, purse, backpack or anywhere! This one wil even fit on your keychain! Or wear it right around your neck!

I don't know about you, but I can't live without my flash drives!

I've used them for the typical "taking documents to the office" routine, but there's a TON of other uses too! Stick MP3s on 'em and listen to your favorite songs at work. Oh, and have you seen some of the newer car radios? They have USB plugs on 'em so you can take a flash drives loaded with MP3s and play it right in your car!

Oh, and this is a really great way to take photos over to show off to family and friends! Just drag & drop your photos to it and plug it into any computer!

Seems like I come up with new uses for these things all the time - you gotta grab 'em when the price is low like this - you know you're gonna need one soon!

Again, these are just $4.97 and U.S. Shipping is FREE on orders over $5!

For that kind of money, better grab a couple! Click the store link right now!

Hello Ubuntu, Nice To Meet You: Part 2

In part 1 of this article, you made the acquaintance of Linux Ubuntu, the free and elegant operating system that really gives Windows a run for its money (or in this case, a run for no money, since Ubuntu is free to download.)

Now let's learn a little more about our new friend by making friends with the Ubuntu desktop and Unity 3D taskbar. Like everything about Ubuntu, it is fully customizable. For now let's take a look at what the default settings look like.

The first button, called "dashboard" acts similar to the search box in Windows. Here you can type the first letters of your application and you get it instantly without having to go through menus.

Ubuntu comes with tons of free applications to cover all of your needs, but you can always add more later by looking in the Ubuntu Software Center.

Click the Ubuntu folder button and you will open a window similar to Windows Explorer.

You will also see a web browser button (Mozilla Firefox is the default browser.)

The Libre Office buttons will open Writer ( similar to Word), Calc (similar to Excel), and Impress (similar to PowerPoint).

The Software Center Button is very like a combination of the add/remove programs panel in Windows and the Windows Store.

Finally, the Terminal Button (the Terminal window can also be called up by pressing Ctrl+Alt+T). This is where you can input commands, if needed.

Now in the upper right of your screen, you'll see some icons similar to the status bar in Windows. By default, you'll see your Internet connection status, volume, time and an icon that allow you quickly access settings and the shutdown menu. Like everything else in Ubuntu, it can be customized.

Now give it a try. Play around! You will be amazed at this operating system's speed and reliability.

iOS 7 Update Fixes Major iPhone Bug

Microsoft isn't the only company with an update. Apple's iOS 7 is getting an update to 7.1. The switch to 7 last fall drew the usual mixed results. Some users loved the new features, others absolutely hated the changes. This update adds some new features and fixes a major bug.

If you don't have the update yet, simply go to settings >general>software update on your iPhone, Ipad or iPod touch.

Among the changes:

You can now tell your "personal assistant" Siri when to listen. By holding down the home button when you talk and releasing it when you are done, the voice recognition software will now hear exactly what you want it to hear. Siri will hear "Where is the closest Starbucks?" as opposed to thinking you are asking, "Where is the closest Starbucks, is that a spider? It's huge! Run!"

The new CarPlay feature will allow you integrate your devices with your vehicle, providing the vehicle offers the feature. There aren't any CarPlay enabled cars on the market right now, but they will be coming soon.

Harry from Auburn, CA writes: I get a strong WiFi signal in my apt, how do I get the password?

Thanks, Harry.

Answer: Harry, I will assume you don't mean the WiFi signal generated by your own router. In that case you would be the person who set the password. If you've set up a WiFi network in your apartment and lost the password, this article has tips for retrieving it: Retrieving Your WiFi Network Password.

But if you're just trying to use a secure WiFi network that your computer is detecting in your apartment, you would get the password by asking the owner for it. If your apartment complex offers free WiFi, you would ask at the office. Otherwise, the signal most likely belongs to a neighbor or a business who is paying for that service.

If the network belongs to a business (like Starbucks or McDonalds) that offers free WiFi to customers, you can learn the password at the business. But usually they intend that service for customers using their computers or mobile device while they are on the premises. Though, normally they don't make much of a fuss if neighbors use that network as long as you aren't using so much bandwidth you slow things down.

If the network belongs to one of your neighbors, you would get the password from...

Teach Yourself Typing

I don't know if it is the nostalgia of learning to type as a kid, or that touch typing lessons are addictive, but I love sites like this where you can learn to type and improve your speed and accuracy!

Before I could even add the site to my list, I sat there and played, err practiced my typing for around a half an hour. I grew up playing Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing, and even had a typing course in high school. So that's definitely where the nostalgia stems from.

This interface is really easy to use. Just start typing the letters on the screen and you're on your way. Above the keyboard you'll find the letters you need to type, and above that the statistics generated from your typing. They cover speed, errors, and even display the lesson set you're working on.

If you want to save your statistics, you can do so by creating an account. Click the Profile button or My Profile near the top, and you'll see what you've done for this session and a log in button. Click that button, and select how you'd like to sign up for your free account either via Facebook (my choice) or via E-mail. This will allow you to keep track of your stats over time on the My Profile page.

Once you're logged in the My Profile page has all sorts of charts and graphs and statistical data you can look at about your typing. You'll even learn what keys you miss the most – curse you, spacebar!

This is a really fun and addictive way to learn to type, or better yet improve your typing! Check it out today!

Carter Shield's Cabin & Dogwood

This is Carter Shield's Cabin in the Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove area. I snagged this shot one spring evening when I was out looking for bear. I drove by and just couldn't resist the dogwood tree blooming with the cabin. Even though it was starting to get late, I parked and ran back for the shot. I shot from…(More)

Miner's Beach Starburst Sunset

We went down to Miner's Beach for a sunset shot and as we got to the beach, we noticed another photographer setup. So, we went around the corner trying to decide just where to shoot (he was there first and we wanted to stay out of his shot). So we found this cool little area and weren't 100% sure about it. We were about to leave and head back towards the beach when...(More)

Running Pronghorn

I had been driving back and forth through the valley, not really seeing anything of interest, and decided to "settle" on a male and female pronghorn that were, for the moment, just lying around in the sagebrush. So, with nothing better to do, I... (More)
