Quick Tip

Joyce from Wisconsin writes:

Linux Ubuntu- Does it include a new firewall to replace Microsoft's firewall? I assume Microsoft won't support it any more, Right? Didn't see any info on this but may have missed it. Should we worry about it or make a change?

Joyce, to be clear, Microsoft won't support anything in Ubuntu or any other Linux system. These are completely different operating systems. Ubuntu does have its own built-in firewall. Ubuntu is considered to be one of the most secure operating systems out there. I fact, the UK recently ranked it at the top of operating system safety. I'm also assuming, you're talking about Microsoft supporting XP. While security support for XP is ending on April 8, 2014, Microsoft will continue to support later systems.

We all know flash drives are probably the best invention since the internet, but when you think what about you can store on these 4GB drives, it's really somethin'!

Think about this - these can hold the same amount of data as not 1, not 3, but 6 - count 'em 6 - CD-ROMS!

PLUS it's small and easy to take along - this thing isn't even as long as your index finger!

I've used them for the typical "taking documents to the office" routine, but there's a TON of other uses too! Stick MP3s on 'em and listen to your favorite songs at work. Oh, and have you seen some of the newer car radios? They have USB plugs on 'em so you can take a flash drives loaded with MP3s and play it right in your car!

Oh, and this is a really great way to take photos over to show off to family and friends! Just drag & drop your photos to it and plug it into any computer!

Seems like I come up with new uses for these things all the time - you gotta grab 'em when the price is low like this - you know you're gonna need one soon!

Computers 101

Olive from Glen Burnie, MD writes:

I am 79 yrs have my XP computer & the computer I'm using isWindows 7 but my HP windows XP is my pride & joy has lightscribe & is so easy for me. My question is I have a 1tb back up new, PCmover & Windows 7 upgrade do you think I can upgrade my XP computer myself ? Both computers are connected to Verizon network.

If your XP computer can handle Windows 7, there's no reason why you can't. Click here to use the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor to make sure your old computer can handle Windows 7.

Moving from XP will mean a clean install, so you will need to back up everything you want to save to that 1 TB hard drive before you install Windows 7 on your computer. Whether or not PC Mover will work for this purpose depends on the version you have. PC Mover Home is primarily aimed at moving from one computer to a new computer. If you have PC Mover Professional, you're good for an in-place upgrade. If not, you might want to consider purchasing PC Mover Windows 7 Upgrade Assistant, which will walk you though an in-place upgrade.

You can use the Windows Compatibility Center to determine what programs will still work with Windows 7. Back up the files you wish to save to your external drive, then install Windows 7 on your computer. (Don't worry, the installation wizard will walk you through it.)

Afterwards, you can transfer your files back to the upgraded computer. As long as you back your important data up first and don't let the idea of upgrading to Windows 7 scare you, you should be able to do it yourself.

On The Move

Jeanne from Sacramento writes:

I have heard that some are putting their VHS and DVD movies, copying them onto a hard disk drive and then access their library like a DVR to watch. What do you need to this? Any special software? Hardware? How large a hard drive? I have about 1,000 movies and was going to start putting all my VHS on DVD, but if this is possible, it sure would be a lot easier!
Thank you so much for your help!

The question I think you need to be asking yourself is not can you do this, but SHOULD you do this. What you are talking about is a massive undertaking that may not be worth your time.

Now when we are talking about family movies and irreplaceable video, by all means find a way to copy them. They are very important. Wedding videos, baby's first steps, that newscast where they featured your kid making a winning high school touchdown…save them all.

But if we are talking about movies…that's a slightly different story. Yes, there are devices that allow you to copy from VHS to your computer where you can store them or burn them to disk. But should you spend that amount of effort on this project?

Here's why I have some doubts...

8-Year-Old Creates App For Other Kids

What were you up to when you were eight -years-old? Tariq Ali from Methuen, Massachusetts has created an app that's available in the Windows Phone store and has been downloaded 1,200 times by people from all around the world. The app is called Kids Zone and it collects YouTube videos and clips from popular children's shows into "channels" designed just for kids.

Designing software runs in the family, Tariq's father is a software engineer. Back in November, he attended a Nokia event for developers with his father and sat in on a session about developing apps using the Windows Phone App Studio.

By the end of the day, the enterprising kid has completed his very first app. His creation was available for download from the Windows Phone Store by December.

The moment I got near the door, that light popped up and I was able to grab the right key immediately and find the keyhole in a moment!

Suffice to say, it's still there- and I don't plan on taking it down anytime soon!

But that's only ONE potential use! This thing is perfectly sized for pretty much anywhere!

Work Benches Decks ANYWHERE!

If you need a light in ANY place, this is the one to put there!

Since it's COMPLETELY weather-resistant + has an included mounting kit... there's not a SINGLE place this won't go!

You Can Even Aim It Perfectly!

Carter Shield's Cabin & Dogwood

This is Carter Shield's Cabin in the Smoky Mountains, Cades Cove area. I snagged this shot one spring evening when I was out looking for bear. I drove by and just couldn't resist the dogwood tree blooming with the cabin. Even though it was starting to get late, I parked and ran back for the shot. I shot from…(More)

Miner's Beach Starburst Sunset

We went down to Miner's Beach for a sunset shot and as we got to the beach, we noticed another photographer setup. So, we went around the corner trying to decide just where to shoot (he was there first and we wanted to stay out of his shot). So we found this cool little area and weren't 100% sure about it. We were about to leave and head back towards the beach when...(More)
