Focus falls on the fan-led music business at The Great Escape tomorrow
The Great Escape kicks off at 10.30am tomorrow in Brighton, with CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke providing an overview of the key developments and stats in the music business year just gone, after which CMU's Sam Taylor will kick off the first of two half-day insight strands looking at how artists and their business partners can capitalise on the opportunities created by the direct-to-fan relationship.

Building A Fan Business will firstly look at the marketing challenges the fan-centric music industry needs to tackle, and at industry-leading new approaches to fan engagement and artist marketing. That will include insights from Adam Biddle from innovative content creators theAudience. As a little taster, we caught up with Biddle ahead of the session, and you can check out our Q&A interview with him here.

Asked what the music industry could learn from the other entertainment sectors theAudience also works with, Biddle notes: "Music is a unique entity. No one is cooler than a rockstar and image in music is just as important as the music itself. Unfortunately, the music industry is convinced that a strong focus on marketing initiatives, often primarily selling a specific product, serves as engaging social content. Other areas of entertainment are more focussed on building their brand and identity inside social".

In the afternoon, 'Building A Fan Business' will go on to review fan data, direct-to-fan platforms and what role labels have to play in all this, a theme Cooke will then expand on with his keynote speech on Friday morning at 10.30am. Immediately after that the insight strand New Product Strategies will kick off, looking at new products and services artists can look to create to sell to that fully engaged core fanbase.

In the afternoon New Product Strategies will move on to explore the trademark business, before the Music Publishers Association lead an hour looking at product innovations in the lyrics and score domain. It will feature Sarah Hopkins from Music Sales on the sheet music market, consultant Michael Gottlieb on innovative lyric licensing and Bruce New from Sony/ATV on apps based around lyrics and score.

Final additions for Great Escape conversations programme announced
Some final names have been added to the previously reported conversations programme at The Great Escape, which kicks off in Brighton tomorrow.

The conversations get underway in Dukes @ Komedia 2 at 1.45pm with a session marking the fiftieth anniversary of pirate radio in the UK. The focus will be on the legendary pirates of the 1980s and 1990s which resulted in some of the leading radio stations - and other music services - of today. How did the media and music industries treat the pirates back then, and how did that relationship change over the years?

Kiss founder Gordon Mac will chat to CMU Editor Andy Malt about his various ventures over the years, including his latest service Mi:Soul, after which former pirate radio participants Daniel Nathan, now Chairman of Brighton's Juice 107.2 and one of the people behind totallyradio.com, and Stephen Taverner, now with East City Management but once involved in Xfm forerunned Q102, will join the conversation.

On Friday, two conversations will focus on the world of artist management. First at 12pm in Dukes 2, Generator bring together some of the best young managers in the UK right now - who will be discussing the challenges of working with new artists in 2014, and alternative approaches for breaking artists and building long-term careers. Jen Long leads the conversation with Ellie Giles of Jigsaw Management, Colin Roberts of Big Life, Ryan Lofthouse of Closer Artists and Russ Tannen of Deadly Management.

Then at 3.30pm in the magnificent Brighton Council Chambers, the Music Managers Forum presents The Great Management Conversation. Four leading artist managers from across the generations will discuss the highs and lows, challenges and thrills of being a manager, and how the rise of the web and big shifts in the record industry have impacted on the profession. Conversing will be Paul Crockford, Brian Message, Dumi Oburota and Stars Redmond. Dan Cairns will lead the conversation.

Friday at TGE will wrap up with Chlöe Howl in conversation with Rinse FM's Carly Wilford, presented by PRS For Music. While the conversations programme is only open to TGE delegates, a small number of seats have been set aside for festival-goers in this one - fans can enter a competition to win tickets here.

Full details of the Great Escape conversations programme are here, plus before it all gets going why not head to Dukes 2 tomorrow at 12.30pm, where Andrea Leonelli will be doing a live record of his Digital Music Trends podcast, with Cliff Fluet, Chris Carey, Fred Bolza and Alison Lamb amongst his guests.

New Zealand Supreme Court to hear Dotcom's warrants appeal
Kim Dotcom has won the right to appeal a decision relating to the legality of the warrants gained by New Zealand police when they raided his home in January 2012.

As previously reported, in June 2012 the New Zealand High Court ruled that police had the wrong sort of warrant, making the raid illegal. That raid, of course, was part of an international operation led by American authorities to shut down the MegaUpload file-transfer service and arrest its key execs.

However, in February this year, the Court Of Appeal overturned that earlier ruling, saying that while the warrants had been "defective", they were still valid. Though the court did uphold that digital evidence secured during the raid should not have been taken out of the country under New Zealand law - US prosecutors having taken copies back to the States.

Dotcom stated at the time that he would appeal the new warrant ruling, and now the Supreme Court has agreed to hear his case. A two day hearing is scheduled to begin on 11 Jun.

Liam Gallagher child support case adjourned while settlement talks continue
Liam Gallagher and journalist Liza Ghorbani have been given three weeks to reach a settlement in their child support battle.

As previously reported, Ghorbani sued Gallagher for $3 million last summer. The pair met after Ghorbani interviewed the singer for The New York Times in 2012, beginning an affair which resulted in the birth of the child and, more recently, Gallagher's divorce from Nicole Appleton.

The next hearing is set for 28 May.

Gregg Allman sues to stop biopic production
Gregg Allman has launched legal action in an attempt to halt the production of a film based on his 2012 autobiography. This follows the death of a camera assistant on the movie, Sarah Jones, who died when she was hit by a train during filming.

The accident occurred on 20 Feb during the filming of a dream sequence involving a bed being placed on train tracks. The bed was to be passed by two trains, but a third appeared un expectedly, striking Jones, who was killed, while several other members of the crew were injured by flying debris.

Investigators have said that the operator of the tracks on which the accident occurred claims that the production company did not have proper permission to film there. A decision is yet to be made on whether or not anyone will be charged over the incident.

Following the accident, actor William Hurt, who was playing Allman, quit the film, and the production company, Unclaimed Freight Productions, postponed shooting indefinitely. However, there are now plans to begin filming again in June.

In his lawsuit, Allman says that the company has lost its right to make a film of his book as he is still owed $9000 from them and principal photography had not begun before a 28 Feb deadline.

Prior to launching legal action, Allman appealed directly to director Randall Miller, saying in a letter: "The reality of Sarah Jones' tragic death, the loss suffered by the Jones family and injuries to the others involved has led me to realise that for you to continue production would be wrong. Your desires as a filmmaker should not outweigh your obligations as a human being. I am asking you to do the right thing and to set aside your attempts to resume the production out of respect for Sarah, her family and the loss that all of us feel so deeply".

Gerard Way signs solo deal with Warner
Gerard Way, perhaps the ex My Chemical Romance member most likely to sign a solo deal, has signed a solo deal. And he has an LP on the go as well, which is always nice to hear.

Following MCR's big split in 2013, the band's one-time lead singer has since re-teamed with Warner Bros, which released Way et al's greatest hits comp 'May Death Never Stop You' last year via its Reprise Records label.

Writing in a blog post on his site, Way said this: "I am continuing full steam into comics, art, and more importantly to some of you - music. I am pleased to let you know I am now signed as a solo artist to Warner Bros Records. My album is near completion, and you should expect to hear things in the near future, even today actually - with a brief snippet of what is to come. I am excited. It's starting again".

Martin Mills discusses Beggars' reduction of streaming royalty split for artists
Beggars Group boss Martin Mills has discussed the decision made by his company to cease paying a 50/50 royalty on streaming income to artists signed to its labels.

As previously reported, at a MusicTank event last month, Beggars Head Of Digital Simon Wheeler confirmed that the company was reviewing its 50/50 split, saying that streaming now accounts for 40% of the company's total digital income and as it becomes such a core revenue stream, that split becomes unviable.

Speaking to Billboard, Mills has now explained: "A record company such as us, needing to provide the services we do, cannot survive even paying artists 50% of net core income, let alone 50% of gross as we have been doing. As streaming becomes core income, it has to bear its share of all our costs: A&R, overhead, marketing, promotion, back office services, etc".

He added that while the final decision on what royalty will be paid on streaming in the future is yet to be made, it will be "significantly higher than the regular rate" offered by other labels, saying: "Beggars contracts actually only provide for the payment of a regular royalty on exploitation such as streaming. We have been applying the 50% discretionary rate policy to all contracts, of whatever vintage. Although we have not yet determined our new policy for existing contracts, the current intention is to continue to apply the new rate to all existing agreements".

He continued: "Although our policy has meant, and will continue to mean, that we have been paying out a lot more in royalties than we contractually have to, we feel comfortable in doing that in that it has made the artists' income from such services more attractive. Many of our artists have been consequently deriving a very significant proportion of their income from streaming".

Record Store Day sales up again in 2014
This year's Record Store Day has been deemed the most successful ever in the UK, with album sales up 30% on the previous year.

The biggest-selling album of the day was 'Indie Cindy' by Pixies, their first studio album since 1991's 'Trompe Le Monde'. Topping the single chart was David Bowie's 'Rock N Roll Suicide' on seven-inch. Meanwhile, classic music shop Abergavenny Music, which diversified out of its usual genre for the day, noted that "the punk titles went like hotcakes".

Commenting on the results, RSD UK spokesman Spencer Hickman said: "The statistics continue to show Record Store Day going from strength to strength, but the stats only tell part of the story. Record Store Day is ultimately about record store culture, the committed music fans who run indie record shops and the music fans who queue from early in the morning to get their hands on the music they love and enjoy this one-day celebration of music's grassroots".

He also noted that the exclusive releases on the day predominantly came from UK artists, which 49% from these shores compared to 40% from the US, and that indie labels were responsible for releasing 78% of the total haul.

"Major record companies and US repertoire may dominate much of the music industry", said Hickman. "But Record Store Day is overwhelmingly about British music and music from independent labels".

One complaint raised this year - most notably by Paul Weller, after fans struggled to find copies of his new single, 'Brand New Toy' - was the appearance of Record Store Day releases for sale on eBay after, during and (in some cases) before the event.

"With limited edition product, there will always be some people trying to cash in, and ultimately we cannot stop members of the public doing this", admitted Hickman. "However store staff are vigilant and often refuse to sell to those clearly trying to flout the spirit of the day".

Part of the problem with Weller's single, he added, was that only 500 copies were pressed: "With nearly 250 stores participating in RSD this year, arguably two copies per store was just not enough. We will be talking to labels to help them better match supply to demand to thwart the eBay sellers while still retaining the exclusivity of the event".

Anyway, there were lots of releases that people did manage to get hold of. Here are the top ten best selling albums of this year:

1 Pixies - Indie Cindy
2 Ray Parker Jr - Ghostbusters
3 Tame Impala - Live Versions
4 Adam & The Ants - Dirk Wears White Sox
5 The Pogues - Live With Joe Strummer
6 The Ramones - Meltdown With The Ramones
7 Green Day - Demolicious
8 The Sex Pistols - Never Mind The Bollocks (Alternative)
9 Gil Scott-Heron - Nothing New
10 T-Rex - Tanx

And the singles:

1 David Bowie - Rock N Roll Suicide
2 Oasis - Supersonic
3 Nirvana - Pennyroyal Tea
4 Bruce Springsteen - American Beauty
5 One Direction - Midnight Memories
6 Joy Division - An Ideal For Living
7 Jake Bugg - There's A Beast And We All Feed It
8 The Stranglers - Peaches
9 The Specials - Sock It To Em JB
10 Damon Albarn - Hollow Ponds

Rap Genius signs agreement with National Music Publishers' Association
Rap Genius has signed an agreement with the US National Music Publishers' Association, which sees the lyrics website properly licence lyrical content from many of the trade group's publisher members.

As previously reported, the NMPA identified Rap Genius last year as one of the "worst offenders" amongst lyrics websites that "engage in blatant illegal behaviour" by publishing lyrics without permission. Rap Genius co-founder Ilan Zechory initially implied that he believed his website required no licenses, but welcomed talks with the organisation. The company also subsequently signed deals with Sony/ATV and Universal Music Publishing.

Announcing the truce yesterday, Zechory said: "The NMPA's members represent some of the best songwriters in the world. Rap Genius allows these songwriters to showcase their work and interact with their biggest fans in unprecedented ways - we couldn't be more excited about this partnership".

NMPA CEO David Israelite added: "Rap Genius is a unique site that allows music fans to connect with songwriters and the emotions they express through their lyrics. That's why today's announcement is a welcome one, and I applaud Rap Genius for respecting the rights of songwriters and compensating them fairly for their work. As more music fans find lyrics they relate to and are curious about online, it becomes imperative that various industries form collaborative partnerships such as what NMPA and Rap Genius have accomplished today".

And just to prove that there were no hard feelings, Israelite sent over a picture of his baby daughter Maia in a Rap Genius onesie. From now on, all settlements should require someone to wear a branded onesie, by law.

Vevo to offer in-video advertising
Vevo has announced a new deal with native in-video advertising company Mirriad. The partnership will see the video platform use Mirriad's technology to enable advertisers to superimpose their adverts actually into the music videos. The superimposed ads - a form of product placement - can be varied from territory to territory, and over time.

Says Mirriad CEO Mark Popkiewicz: "Vevo is an essential partner for us as we grow our brand in North America, extend our technology beyond linear television to online digital video, and offer brands a powerful new way to affiliate with the world's best video content. Mirriad is disrupting the traditional barriers between content and advertising with an innovative solution that allows brands to very precisely integrate brands in a range of online video, in-context and with total transparency. We help marry top brands and quality content and deliver an entertaining experience to the 'skip generation' - those consumers whose viewing skips through many traditional ads and across multiple screens".

Vevo President Rio Caraeff adds: "Our vision at Vevo is to continually re-invent music video as an entertainment art form. Over 30 years ago, music videos on television were a linear, one-dimensional experience. Today, connected platforms give fans more interactive and personal ways to engage with their favourite artists. Mirriad allows us to continue bringing the industry forward and improve our fan's experience by offering uninterrupted viewing while giving brands and content partners a native, creative, scalable and targeted way to come together".

The first advert to use the technology is Aloe Blacc's 'The Man', which features a super imposed billboard advert for Levi's. Watch it here.

  Approved: Shabazz Palaces
Three years on from their 2011 debut, 'Black Up', Shabazz Palaces will release new album 'Lese Majesty' on 28 Jul, once again through Sub Pop.

While 'Black Up' was an almost fleeting affair - ten tracks in 36 minutes, long enough to impress with its experimental hip hop sound, short enough to not outstay its welcome - the new album takes a potential risk by stretching itself out over eighteen tracks. Perhaps in the interests of maintaining some sense of brevity, the tracks are split into seven 'suites'. Though equally it could also be a sign of self-indulgent experimentation gone wrong.

I think that's an acceptable level of risk. But the only way to find out the answer will be to listen to the music itself. And while I can't give you all eighteen tracks, I can at least give you one to listen to, 'They Come In Gold', which shows positive initial results.

Adele hints re LP three, 25
Well, here's news. It's looking a lot like Adele's third LP will be titled '25', and will be released this year. Why am I saying these things? Because Adele said, or at least implied, them first via Twitter, on Sunday night at 11.26pm. That's why.

And although Sunday was actually Adele's 26th birthday, that fact only explains away the first bit of her tweet, which read: "Bye bye 25... See you again later in the year x", and came with a photo of Adele looking pleased, almost as if she'd just finished making an album. Yeah, that's definitely an "I've just finished an album" face, if I ever saw one.

So as to the first part of the tweet and, bar the really-pretty-feasible possibility that Adele has got so astronomically rich as to own a time machine, it's likely that an LP tying into the singer's age-titling-LP-trend, a la '19' and '21', is on its way soon. And if it is, it might feature Phil 'cave man' Collins. And even likelier, it'll credit OneRepublic's Ryan Tedder, who worked on '21', and said a while back that he'd been involved in the new LP, as a songwriter.

PS Happy belated birthday, Adele.

Release Round-Up: Usher, Kimbra, Boots, Ryan Hemsworth, Slowolf and Menswe@r
Who wants to watch R&B star Usher popping and locking all over the place and miming playing drums with his top off, boasting that his girl does good kissing? If so, look not a tiny bit farther than Usher's new video for his forthcoming single, 'Good Kisser', which has its sexy premiere earlier this week. Hurry over to YouTube now and catch all the hot man-on-drums action. And while you're watching it, try to bear in mind that the track is the first sign of an eighth Usher LP, and will itself be released on 15 Jun.

Australian pop soloist Kimbra, aka the girl off of that Gotye song, has shared a track titled '90s Music' for all to hear. It's a right old din, as my dad might say, and is taken from Kimbra's forthcoming and still-TBA sophomore LP. And if you don't like it, you can blame Matt Bellamy's off of Muse, because apparently he had a hand in writing it.

Have a listen to it here, anyway.

And ooh, this is big. 'Big' like Beyonce, big. It's a mixtape by Bey's go-to-conspirator, R&B man Boots, who played a large part in making 'Beyonce' what it is. And what it is is; great. Anyway, this is Boots' time to shine, not Beyonce's. Though Beyonce does feature on the final track in the mix, 'Dreams', whilst Son Lux, Shlohmo, and (my top person in the world) Kelela drop in on other songs. Beyonce, Beyonce, Beyonce. And Kelela. Oops, and Boots.

Play the whole thing, which is bears a title-for-all-seasons, 'WinterSpringSummerFall', now via SoundCloud.

Sample-tastic Canadian DJ Ryan Hemsworth is to release a set of free tracks by his friends, allies and affiliates via a kind of online mini-label title Secret Songs. The first free gift in the scheme, which will yield a pair of "consistently great" (swears Hemmo) singles each month, is a track by teen mixologist Tennyson, called 'You're Cute'.

Stream that here.

It's now time to think on doomy R&B/hip hop/metal artist Slowolf, whose doomy line in R&B/hip hop/metal had an approved sticker slapped on it last year. Slowolf, aka Danish human man Andreas Asingh, is previewing his new EP, 'Bounty', by placing its tracks online, one by one, ahead of its release on 26 May. The latest sneak-peak, following 'Overdose', is the Benny Banks-featuring 'Horsey', which is here.

And, finally. Platinum-disc-forging Britpop crew Menswe@r are back! With their first single since 1996! Well, technically, the track, which is titled 'Crash 14', has already been released, as a B-side to 1996's 'We Love You'. But lo! It's since has had a modern-day makeover c/o Menswe@r's lead singer Johnny Dean and the band's new member sheet. It'll be released digitally, on limited edition seven-inch and cassette, on 26 May. Don't miss it.

Eminem announces first UK show since 2003
Eminem has announced that he will play Wembley Stadium this summer, after a performance at Hyde Park fell through. The show will be his first in London since 2001, while his last UK performance took place in Glasgow in 2003.

The Mirror reported last week that Eminem had been in talks to headline Hyde Park as part of the British Summer Time festival. However, negotiations had stalled when the Royal Parks organisation deemed that the rapper was unsuitable to perform in one of the Queen's green spaces, given his tendency for controversy.

Slim Shady announced yesterday that he wouldn't be playing Hyde Park with an Instagram post that simply read "Never mind Hyde Park", before announcing the Wembley show last night. The performance will take place on 11 Jul, with tickets on sale this Friday at 9am.

The venue switch couldn't come at a better time for Wembley Stadium, which has just reported a £7.2 million loss for 2013. This figure initially appears an improvement on 2012's £7.8 million pre-tax loss, though This Is Money notes that, due to an accounting date change, last year's losses were actually run up in just seven months.

Glastonbury bans legal highs
Glastonbury's rule-making board has at last come around to the Diana Vickers school of thought on legal highs at festivals - which is, mainly, that legal highs at festivals can be very bad news.

Glasto is the latest live franchise to join the likes of Bestival, Lovebox and Global Gathering in banning 'psychoactive synthetic substances' from its events. Statistics released by the ONS last year showed an 80% increase in legal high-related deaths, from 29 to 52, while health researchers say taking them is like "dancing in a minefield", since the influx of unidentified substances into the market is so fast-paced that it outstrips drug laws.

Various festivals, including Glastonbury, shut down their sites on Monday in a so-called 'blackout', part of an AIF-backed initiative to raise awareness of the risks of taking legal highs.

Maryon Stewart, Founder of Angelus Foundation, the charity collaborating with the AIF on the campaign, says: "Legal highs are a huge but hidden problem because young people are acting in ignorance and no-one is measuring the harms. We are determined to keep expanding our prevention programme into new areas and bigger events until everyone get the message that the effects of these substances are unpredictable and high risk".

Info on the work the AIF and Angelus are doing is via this link.

'Monica Lewinsky' should not be a euphemism for Jay-Z's premature ejaculation, says Monica Lewinsky
Monica Lewinsky, who of course hit the headlines in the late 90s after having a liaison with then US president Bill Clinton, has pointed out a linguistic error in Beyonce's song, 'Partition'.

In the song, which tells the heart-warming story of Jay-Z ejaculating on Beyonce's dress in the back of a limousine, Beyonce sings, "He popped all my buttons and he ripped my blouse / He Monica Lewinski'd all on my gown".

Making a very good point, Lewinsky said in a new interview with Vanity Fair: "Thanks, Beyonce, but if we're verbing, I think you meant 'Bill Clinton'd all on my gown,' not 'Monica Lewinsky'd'".

Also, can you use verb as a verb? Well, anyway, here's the song, in all its inaccurate glory.
