In "Civil War Soul Sisters," specialist Lavonda Broadnax draws on "Selected Online Works by Civil War Era African American Women," a web guide she created that features more than seventy-five published works: biographies, essays, autobiographies, speeches, cookbooks, textbooks, children's books, biographical collections, poetry, novels, and more. The guide is available at http://www.loc.gov/rr/program/bib/aacivilwarwomen/. Broadnax will explore the circumstances that enabled a set of African American women to publish their writings at a time when it was still illegal for the vast majority of African Americans to learn to read or write.
