Roger asks: When I type on my Windows 7 laptop, it does not type what letters I type and comes out gibberish. I look at my hands when I type so when I look at the screen it doesn't make sense. What is happening? Hi Roger, My first guess is that you have the Function (Fn) key turned on. The function key allows you to type alternate letters on a laptop keyboard, generally denoted by smaller versions of characters on certain keys or characters in a different color. Sometimes the Function key can be locked on and you not know it, so I'd suggest pressing it once and trying to type. Also check that the NumLock key is not locked down as well, as this could also be affecting the letters.
If that did not work, it is possible your keyboard language got changed. To fix this, go to Control Panel, Clock, Language, and Region (or similar), then Change Input Methods under Language. There you can change your keyboard language. There are other keyboards set up with a different layout to the letters, so if it somehow got set to one of these, the letters would be wrong. ~ Audra Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
They. Are. EVERYWHERE! Ever tried to enjoy a nice night outside? After all, the weather is finally warm enough! But there's one big problem... those mosquitoes. They're around every corner! You step outside, and before you can even close the door behind you... CHOMP! There's one. Then two. Then a dozen of them! So how do you deal with them? Hopefully not sprays and chemicals! In fact, I have to say, bug spray is one of the WORST solutions! In addition to all the obvious things that we all hate about it, it's potentially dangerous! Prolonged use can even lead to severe skin conditions, rashes, or burns! The National Institute of Health has an ENTIRE article dedicated to the potential hazards of bug spray! "Persons who use very high concentrations of DEET [the chemical used in most bug spray] on their skin over a long period of time may have more severe skin reactions that include blistering, burning, and permanent scars of the skin." What are you other options?! Bug zappers? The mosquitoes are all over you, they don't care about some silly light! And mosquito nets are terrible - you went outside to enjoy some SPACE, not to be confined in a net! Look, you can enjoy your outside WITHOUT mosquitoes, nasty chemicals, or useless zappers!
It's not even 5" tall and keeps your area completely bug free!
It has 3 frequencies that it emits that keep mosquitoes from coming anywhere NEAR you! Two of the frequencies keep female mosquitoes away by mimicing the sound of males. (If you didn't know, only female mosquitoes are after your blood... meaning no more bites!) But if that wasn't enough, it ALSO emits a sound that mimics the dragonfly: the mosquito's natural predator! So any of the little blood-suckers that weren't scared before? Oh yeah, they're hightailing it out of there now!
See, these freqencies are loud and clear to mosquitoes... but to you? Practically nothing! Chances are you won't hear a thing! So you can avoid the sticky bug spray WITHOUT making any tradeoffs! In fact, it's completely safe for people, kids, even pets! Only mosquitoes are gonna be annoyed by this! That's a win-win if you ask me! Speaking of a win, check THIS out!
THAT'S A GIGANTIC AREA OF COVERAGE! This is perfect for decks, patios, backyards, camping, even social events! Cover a HUGE area!
So if you're on the go, pop some batteries in this bad boy and you can put it anywhere! At less than 5 inches tall, there's no place this won't fit! But if you're at home, feel free to plug this into any outlet and BAM! No batteries, no mosquitoes! YEAH BABY! Keep The Bugs At Bay For CHEAP! Only $14.97 and you don't have to worry about those nasty, itchy bites all over your limbs! That's a great deal to finally take back your yard and LITERALLY save your skin! Grab 'em below, but be quick! Last time we ran these, they COMPLETELY sold out! http://store.worldstart.com/product/9626 Warning: I wasn't kidding - these ALWAYS sell out! And if you wait until Wednesday the last few will cost $21.97 anyway!
MacClurg from Rochester, NY writes: I operate from a home office and am considering uploading all my "Documents" about 13mb, to the cloud as a reliable back up system. I have an external HD but don't trust it will work properly if my desk top HD fails. What is the most reliable cloud program to use? I would like to have the same file orientation as my MS system displays now. I would like my desk top files and the cloud files to update automatically as I change them. Thank you. There are multiple cloud services out there and most of them are pretty reliable. There's Microsoft's OneDrive, DropBox, Apple's iCloud, Google Drive and Mozy to name a few. For your needs, I think I'd suggest the Microsoft OneDrive.
You don't seem to require a lot of storage space right now, so the 7GB you get for free just for signing up should work well for you. If you happen to subscribe to Office 365, you'll get even more free space. No matter which service you select, it won't change the nature of your files. Your cloud storage simply stores the information just like a flash drive or a hard drive. If you save a MS Word document to the cloud and open it in MS Word, it will be exactly the same. Signing up is simple. If you already have an Outlook.com, MSN, HotMail or LiveMail address, you already have an account. Just go to Outlook.com to log in with your e-mail address and password. To sign up for a new account, go to Outlook.com and create a Microsoft account.
If you use Office 2013 or Office 365, you'll find that Word will default to saving documents to the cloud. I have my computer set up to save my Word documents to the cloud and also save a copy of those OneDrive documents to my hard drive as well. You can learn how that works by clicking here.
Saving to or opening a document from OneDrive is just like using any other drive on a computer. You select OneDrive instead of a folder or external drive.
I have been very happy with OneDrive, using it to access my documents on my computer, phone and tablet and also on other computers. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Instagram 101: Part 1 Instagram is a popular free app for iPhone and Android that is part photo-editing app and part social media app. This app has capitalized on the increasing use of the smartphone as a primary camera for many people. My reasons for writing about the app are twofold. My husband just joined and he has a lot of questions about how it works. Also, the app has just been updated to offer some new editing features. I thought I would start with a basic tour of Instagram. We've written about it before, but there have been several changes. To use Instagram you'll need an iOS or Android device with a camera. You can download Instagram for free from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store. To start, create a username and password and you are ready to go. You can find friends who are already using Instagram from your Facebook friends or from the contact list on your phone. This is what your homepage or feed in Instagram will look like. To scroll, you swipe up or down on the screen. The feed will show your photos and photos from friends and organizations or public figures you have chosen to follow. This photo is from the U.S. Department of the Interior. They post some beautiful nature photos and pics of our national monuments.
At the bottom of the screen you'll find the menu buttons for Instagram. The one to the far left that looks like a house is your Home button, where you can view your feed. Next to it you'll find the icon for Explore. Want more? Just click WorldStart!
Anna from Kerrville, TX writes: I have so many questions about Outlook I wouldn't know where to begin. How do you block senders in Outlook? Used to be easy before Outlook. I hate Outlook but seem to be stuck with it in Windows 8. Hotmail people are going to be sorry, sorry How To Block Senders In Outlook If you are tired of receiving spam messages and other "junk" emails in Outlook, there are easy ways to block unwelcome senders. Manually blocking email addresses and/ or entire domains would be very tedious indeed. However, you can delete all messages from a sender in your Outlook.com Inbox and other folders, and categorize these into a "blocked senders list" by doing the following:
Another way to do this:
Outlook.com will move all messages from the address (or addresses) in the current folder (but not in other folders say, your archiving folder if you are in the Inbox) to the Deleted folder and add the sender or senders to your list of blocked senders. Blocking Email Address in Outlook.com To add or put any address or domain name to your Outlook.com's list of blocked senders without a message from the potential sender at hand, you need to: Head on over to WorldStart for the rest of this tip!

Food Sake Tokyo One of the professors I had this semester got approved for a sabbatical in upcoming fall semester in Japan! He's been posting all sorts of great links on Facebook and when I checked out this food blog, I knew I had to share it with you if only for the scrumptious food photos! This food blog explores teh best food in Tokyo from a chef's perspective. Navigation is easy, you just scroll down through the entries and use the Older Posts and Newer Posts options at the bottom the page to navigate the entries. You can also use the menu on the right to browse by Tags or by using the Archive links. One of my favorite posts so far has been Visiting Tsukiji Market - it provides great tips for visiting the market, but also serves as a great example of the way the posts are written. You'll notice it's photo heavy and after the photos come the text where the author links to very useful information like where you can get coffee before the market opens, how you can check on when the market will be open, and what it will look like when the market moves. A great example of food related posts is Taste of Culture The Tohoku Kitchen Workshop it is filled with images of the food, how things are made, as well as written information. I hope you'll enjoy browsing the the Food Sake Tokyo blog as much as I did! ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
Are You Wasting Cash? Look, we've all got a drawer FULL of batteries, right? Some might be new, some might be old, some might be DEAD! The problem is... which are which? Whether you're just tired of wasting money, or want to clean out that drawer without tossing perfectly good batteries, I've got the solution!
