Having trouble viewing parts or all of the newsletter? View the entire newsletter here! Betty from Rochester, NY writes: I can receive my email but can't send any out. I have Windows 7 and 374GB available on my hard drive. I have checked my internet and modem with my internet provider and it is supposed to be ok. thank-u for any help u can provide. If you can receive but not send e-mail, it means something is wrong with your outgoing server (SMTP) settings. It can be something as simple as typo in the address. I detailed how a single misplaced dot kept me from sending messages for months in this article. Go to the account section of your e-mail client and check those outgoing server settings to make sure they are correct. If you aren't sure what they should be, you should be able to look them up on your Internet provider's website or by calling customer service. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
Tired Of Overpriced, Undersized Memory Cards? Here's The Card To Save The Day! It's An 8 GB SDHC Card... With Class 4 Speed... FOR ONLY $4.97! Don't Let This Deal Pass You By!
Okay, here's the story: I was getting ready to go on a trip and realized I couldn't find a single memory card for my camera. So, naturally, I started looking around to see if I could get a relatively inexpensive one for the trip... ...apparently not. EVERYONE IS CHARGING ABSURD PRICES FOR THESE THINGS! So, instead of complaining about it - I'm doing something about it. I went to every supplier I could and worked out the very best deal. The result? An 8GB SDHC memory card for only $4.97! Seriously - every time I find myself needing a new memory card, I take a trip to the store and realize that NOBODY is charging sane prices for these things! The higher capacity you go, the more absurd the prices get! And honestly... most of us just need about 8GB anyway! But there is a catch to my sale: my supplier let me have a certain number of these at a special deal. Once that ends, so does this special. For just $4.97 you can get an SDHC card that works for ALL of your devices! That means your cameras, your camcorders, your MP3 players, GPS units, dash cams, anything you might need an SDHC card for! And these store A TON of stuff! To be specific, it's over 4000 photos, 2000 songs, nearly a DAY'S worth of video and more! On top of that, with built-in write protection switch, you can make sure that your important data is NOT accidentally erased! (You won't have to worry about your once-in-a-lifetime photo getting accidentally "lost" ever again!) I don't want anyone to miss out, so I'm URGING you to head over to the store and pick one of these up while you still can! At $4.97 you would be Grade-A Crazy to even consider passing this up! http://store.worldstart.com/product/9779
Charles writes: I got an e-mail from someone with a link to a video. I cannot play the video, but if I download Google Chrome, then I can play the video. What am I missing in Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 that I cannot play the videos without Google Chrome. I do not really like Google Chrome or Google as a home page. I seem to be missing something. Charles, Internet Explorer 11 works a little differently that Chrome or Firefox. Instead of using add-ons like Flash, Silverlight or Quicktime to play video, it stream content using HTML5 and Adobe Flash. If you have an issue playing a video, try turning on compatibility view in IE 11. Go to the gear symbol in the upper-right and select Compatibility view settings from the drop-down menu. Then you can add the site to the list of sites in compatibility view. Also make sure to check you don't have InPrivate browsing turned on. It may be blocking a pop-up or disabling an add on that the video program needs in order to play the video. Go to the gear symbol and choose Safety followed by InPrivate browsing. You can choose to turn InPrivate Browsing off. You may need an add-on or extension to play the video. If you click on it to play, it may tell you which one you are missing. Or you can compare add-ons and extensions in Chrome to IE and see what's different. Among the top culprits for videos not playing are missing or disabled FlashPlayer or Java add-ons. To check add-ons in IE, click the gear symbol and choose Manage add-ons from the drop-down window. To find them in Chrome, click the menu icon and choose Settings. Then select Extensions on the far left. If Java is enabled in Chrome and not in IE, that could be the problem. Although sometimes, you will find that you just have to use another browser beside your preferred program to view videos on another site. You do not, however, have to settle for Google as your homepage in Chrome. You can switch to any homepage you choose, even MSN. Select Settings, then choose appearance and underneath Show home button, choose Change. Then type in the site you want for a homepage. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
iOS Show Your Battery Percentage Since migrating over to an iPhone, I've found myself plenty impressed with the overall battery life. As long as your screen's not blazingly bright, (and you don't keep 18 million apps open at the same time) one can expect a decent day's use without issue. But man, reading that little icon in the upper right-hand corner of my screen can be a real pain-in-the-you-know-what sometimes! See? It's itty-bitty! So, let's learn how we can put a percentage next to the battery icon for a secondary indicator! That way you'll know absolutely when you need to find an outlet! Go to: Settings>General>Usage but don't go tapping wildly just yet; your iDevices has to populate its "Storage List" first, which can bump the page trust me, it's frustrating. Once that's done, however, you can scroll down a bit until you see... Want more? Head on over to WorldStart!
Sylvia from New York City writes: I can usually recognize a phony request in an e-mail, which I then delete, but sometimes I receive an e-mail, for example, from the NY Times to do a survey. How can I be sure this is coming from the Times and not a phishing expedition. I will open the e-mail, but hesitate to click on a link, unless I'm sure, but don't know how. Great question Sylvia. Truthfully, it's a tricky business. But you've already got the most important thing down, you're aware to be on the lookout for things that don't quite look right. Phishing is when online scammers entice people to give away their personal information with e-mails or sites that mimic communications from sites that you know and trust. One question to ask yourself is "Would I legitimately be getting a message from this site?" Take the New York Times survey e-mail. Do you subscribe to the New York Times? If it's about a contest, did you enter that contest? If it's about a product, is it a product that you've expressed interest in? Watch out for anything that wants your... Geography IQ I felt like I stumbled into a paradise of knowledge when I found Geography IQ. It provides a wealth of information about geography! You'll also find economic, political, historical, and cultural information in addition to the geographical info. When you arrive at the site, you'll find featured information on the right, and a menu on the left. The menu contains options for browsing the World Map, Rankings, and even houses a currency converter. World Map this whisks you away to a world map. You click on it to locate the country you want information for starting with the continent and then the country itself. Once you've done that you're provided a ton of information about that geographic location. You can also access information for the countries on the menu by browsing alphabetically. Just pick the letter that the country you want to investigate begins with. Rankings this section allows you to look at rankings for the following categories: Geography, People, Economics, Communications, Transportation, and Military. And each of these has statistics for Top 25, Bottom 25, All Ascending, and All Descending. This is a cool way to find out information about geography, people, economics, and more! Everyone Needs A Webcam! Including You! It's the most versatile device you'll EVER attach to your computer! You see, I'm on the road a lot. And that means less time I get to spend with my family. The only thing that helps keep me sane? Our webcams! I could be on the other side of town or the other side of the country - all it takes is popping open my laptop to be able to see and talk to anyone practically face-to-face! Seriously - you can use a webcam for ANYTHING! They're popular for businesses now, you can use them to just chat, and of course they're PERFECT for keeping in touch with family. (Not only do you get face-to-face time, it's free! No long distance bills for video chatting, even if they're on the other side of the PLANET!) But you NEED a quality webcam to enjoy it! See, there's two kinds of computers or laptops out there right now: one's with no webcams, or ones with BAD webcams. If you don't have something like my new webcam right here - you'll be stuck like that forever! You see, integrated laptop webcams are some of the worst of the worst. Think I'm exaggerating? It sounds like a joke but I'm NOT kidding! This one is 2 megapixels AND has a built-in microphone! It strikes the perfect balance between quality and framerate! At 30 FPS, things just look right. If you've ever seen cheap webcams, you've probably noticed how choppy/jittery they are. That's what it looks like when they run at lower framerates. It's ugly. It's awkward. And you DON'T have to put up with it! In fact, not only does this camera combine a good picture quality with a steady framerate... It Automatically Corrects... So you don't have to be a camera expert to use this thing! You don't even have to be a COMPUTER expert! Just plug this thing in and you're 99% done installing it! That's about equal to your average digital camera! But there's more to my excitement than just a cool webcam loaded with cool features... ...wait until you see how we stack up against the competition! I JUST did a quick search for this camera online... ...this is what Google had to say: You know what? This camera is probably worth that much! BUT THAT'S NO REASON TO PAY SO MUCH! I've got it for JUST $12.97! And to make it even better? Check this out! When I was testing this thing I personally felt the retractable cable could stand to be a little longer. So I'm throwing in a FREE USB EXTENSION CABLE with ANY ORDER TODAY! If you need to use it for this camera, use it! If not, you can use it with literally ANY other USB device you've got! These things usually run about $5 but you're getting one as a FREE bonus! Quick - click the link below before these sell out! http://store.worldstart.com/product/9722
