Patches Available For Linux Security Flaw Patches are now available for what experts are calling a "moderately serious" issue that effects Linux Ubuntu, Debian and some Red Hat operating systems. The flaw could be exploited and allow someone to launch a denial of service attack or gain privileges to a system and even crash it. The flaw has been there for awhile, it came about as the result of changes made in 2009, but has only recently been discovered. Ubuntu patch details are here. You can find Pandora Rules The Streaming Market When it comes to streaming music services, Pandora is clearly the leader of the pack in the U.S. According to a survey by Statista, 31% of people reported listening to Pandora in the previous month. Their closest competitor was iHeartRadio at 9%. iTunes may me the king of music downloads, but iTunes Radio has an 8% share of the streaming market followed by Spotify at 6%. Google may dominate other areas online, but Google Play All Access only had 3% of the streaming market. You wouldn't want a computer from the 80s. You wouldn't want a monitor from the 80s. WHY ARE YOU USING A MOUSE FROM THE 80s?! Left click. Right click. Scroll wheel. Yawn. This design has been almost completely static since computer mice became popular right at the start of the 1980s! I'm not exaggerating - besides a few shifts in ergonomics, this design was mostly identical to the original late 1960 prototypes! That's the design YOUR mouse is based off of! It's archaic and uncomfortable! Don't you think technology and research would've improved that design a bit by now? IT HAS! You just didn't know it! There's a mouse that takes full advantage of modern technology, combining comfort, efficiency, and FAMILIARITY to make the closest thing to perfection the mouse world might ever see! The Logitech M600 Touch Mouse! You know those smartphones we're all so familiar with now? You swipe up and down to scroll, left and right to flip through pictures, and you just TAP to select... Now THAT'S easy & intuitive, right? NOW YOU CAN GET THAT WITH YOUR MOUSE! This is the best of both worlds: the precision of a mouse with the ease-of-use of touchscreens! It's like getting a whole new world of control with the device you're ALREADY going to use every time you sit at your computer! I was SHOCKED at how I instantly felt like I had been using this mouse for years the moment I got it in my hands! Getting rid of the scroll wheel and buttons sounds drastic... but it was about time! Look, the scroll wheel WAS a great idea. It made navigating websites easier and getting through documents less of a chore. But that doesn't mean it's irreplacable! In fact, it's definitely served its purpose. Those things are prone to malfuctioning, getting clogged up with debris, and just downright being inaccurate! This touch interface makes scrolling a BREEZE! Simply slide your finger up or down and it scrolls RIGHT at the speed you use! No more scrolling too far and zooming past content, or having to make a million rotations to get to the spot you need! This makes scrolling as natural and precise and moving a piece of paper with your hand! It's THAT simple! In fact, you don't even have to have your hands in a specific position to use it, if you want to grip a little higher up or lower down than usual, the mouse STILL reacts to your input! If you use this once, you'll NEVER go back! It's that good! And it doesn't matter if you're left or right handed - this thing is shaped to accomodate everyone! One of the most important things to ANY mouse is how accurate it is, right? Well, you'll be glad to hear this, then! After all, what good is a mouse that isn't accurate? The Logitech M600 uses laser-grade optical tracking to give you the BEST control you could ask for! We're talking pixel-perfect aim! If you're doing sensitive photo editing, you know you won't struggle to hit the exact area you need, down to individual pixels! You know what makes this even BETTER? Of course, like any great modern mouse, the Logitech M600 is completely wireless and takes just one AA battery to operate! In fact, when you use the wireless receiver, it can even support up to 5 other Logitech devices at ONCE! You won't have to plug in different receivers for your keyboard or anything like that if it's a Logitech supported one! I'm not even CLOSE to finished... CHECK OUT THIS DEAL! This mouse isn't just comparable to the $100 you see at the big box stores... it's BETTER! It's a Logitech mouse (which is the #1 name in computer peripherals like mice and keyboards), and the touchpad scrolling is going to save you TONS of trouble! And that's why OTHER places are getting away with trying to sell this for BIG BUCKS! But at WorldStart, you KNOW we're sellin' it for as low as it can go! In fact, I want everyone to upgrade to this new mouse so bad I'm lowering the price EVEN MORE than it was before! You can get this unbelievable mouse for JUST $14.97! http://store.worldstart.com/product/9542

Patty writes: Wondering if you can help me purchasing a new lap top computer..and what programs etc I should include. I have used XP Professional since it was available and was highly pleased with it. We have HP equipment and have no problems there either. I am a Treasurer and Secretary for my Clubs and want programs that are compatible with other computers. We use Microsoft programs as well. Several of my friends have purchased the Microsoft 8 and say it is too complicated and they are unable to understand how to use this program. Since I enjoy and read your newsletters wondered if you could suggest a good program for me. Patty, it sounds to me like you'll want to stick with Windows as your operating system. So your choices would be a Windows 8.1 system or having Windows 7 installed on your new computer. Windows 7 will seem more familiar to you, but while Windows 8.1 is a little different at first, I think it's actually a great operating system. (Time for a shameless plug for Steve's WSU Guide to Windows 8.1 -a great way to learn this new operating system.) Plus, Windows 8.1 will be supported by Microsoft until 2023, three years longer than Windows 7. I will warn you that because of the age of your current operating system, (and I'm assuming the peripherals you use with it) that you may find some compatibility issues with either Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 Also, some of your older programs may require new versions. You can head to the Windows Compatibility Center to look up your hardware and peripherals and see which operating systems they are compatible with. If portability is an issue, you might also want to look into a tablet with a attachable keyboard such as a Surface Pro. They are much lighter and easy to transport and the touchscreens work well with many Windows 8.1 features. (You don't need a touchscreen to use 8.1, by the way.) So, if you need to take your device along to club meetings at various locations, this could come in handy. You might also find that using cloud services like Microsoft's OneDrive can be a big help to your club. You could put up documents, spreadsheets, photos or presentations that would be instantly accessible to all club members. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Barnes & Noble Partners With Samsung For New Nook Barnes & Noble has a new ally in its war with Amazon for the tablet market. The company said last year it was re-evaluating its place in the tablet market and many thought they might just get out of the tablet business all together. Instead, the company is partnering with Samsung to make the Nook 4 The new tablet will be called the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 Nook. The tablets will use Samsung hardware paired with the Barnes & Noble collection of more than three million books, magazines and newspaper. Barnes & Noble has struggled along with other bookstores with brick and mortar locations as book-buying habits have shifted to the eBook market, which has been dominated by Amazon. The Amazon Kindle Fire tablet has proved very popular. Head on over to WorldStart to learn more.
Liam from Boulder writes: When you set up e-mail you'll see POP, SMTP and IMAP and you have to pick what kind of account you want. What's the difference? What do the letters mean. I asked the tech support guy form my cable company and he didn't do much but repeat what the names were and tell me their e-mail was SMTP and that if I had a question about Outlook, I needed to ask Microsoft. Is there a simple explanation, a non-techie person could understand. Sure Liam, let's go over what it all means. POP3 Post Office Protocol 3. This kind of server stores your incoming messages on the server until you use an e-mail client like Windows Mail, Outlook or Thunderbird to download them to your computer. Generally those messages are then deleted from the server. You can then only access those message on the computer where you've downloaded them. IMAP Internet Message Access Protocol. This type of server lets you access your e-mail without downloading it to a computer. You can read, edit or delete the messages right on the server. The messages will remain on the server until you choose to delete them. You can access your e-mail from other computers or mobile devices. More and more people are moving to IMAP for the convenience of being able to access their e-mail at any time from any device. Just click WorldStart for the rest of this helpful tip!

24 Tricks To Sleep In The Heat Even once the temperature hits a point where my roommate and I will put our window unit air conditioner in to keep the house cool, we still won't have air in the bedrooms to cool us off when we sleep. So I wanted to find some tips that specifically addressed trying to sleep in heat and I found this awesome list that offers 24 different things you can do to stay cool. Navigation is easy! Just scroll on down to the list and read the tips. There's a small introduction that covers why you might opt to not run the air conditioner at night and then it's straight into the tips. What I really liked through out these tips were the links to other places on the net that show you how to do these things or how to create them. For example in tip #5, you'll learn how to sleep like an Egyptian by clicking the link in the tip. Or in tip #24 there's a link that shows you how to make a buckwheat pillow or DIY sock hot packs made from rice. The tip I've noticed that helps the most is #15 hydration. Drinking water before bed has really helped me not wake up parched and dehydrated from sleeping and sweating in the humidity. If I didn't already sleep with an ice pack on my feet wrapped in a cotton pillow case that would have been my pick for a helpful tip. Go check out these tips and learn how to sleep more comfortably in the summer heat! http://greatist.com/happiness/tricks-to-sleep-in-the-heat ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
