Google appears to prioritise ads for legit sources in searches for pirated content
Google is possibly experimenting with a new system that would see ads for legit content platforms positioned at the top of searches for unlicensed movies or music.

As previously reported, Google has been much criticised by the music and movie industries for not doing enough to steer web-users to legitimate rather than illegal sources of content. In the ideal world the movie studios and record companies would prefer Google to completely remove piracy sources from their search results, and not just link by link, but anything originating from such a site, and especially if said site is the subject of a web-blocking injunction.

But Google has resisted such calls, instead telling content owners to sort out their SEO so that legit content performs better than illegal content in search, and then by promising to change their search algorithm to prioritise approved sites. The labels and studios didn't think much of the initial proposal, though welcomed the latter, until they concluded that the algorithm tweak had achieved little.

But Torrentfreak has spotted that some key searches on Google for popular TV shows followed by piracy-related terms like 'torrent', 'BitTorrent', 'DVDrip' and 'Putlocker' recently resulted in ads for legit video-on-demand services like Netflix, Hulu and Google's own Play platform appearing at the top of the screen. And while clearly marked as 'ad' results, they seem more obvious than the commercially-driven search listings that usually appear on the Google site.

Of course, Netflix et al could bid for Google advertising spots that put them at the top of searches for "Breaking Bad torrent" anyway, though Torrentfreak suggests that these ad spots are different, and are possibly part of a new pilot initiative by the web giant that aims to placate its critics in the entertainment industry.

Though whether the studios and labels would actually be placated by such a move remains to be seen. Some might argue that Google commercialising the diverting of users to legit services is not appropriate, or that ad links will never have the same impact as non-commercial search results. But if Torrentfreak is right about the web firm's intent, this could please some in the rights sector.

MegaUpload lawyers want further postponement of civil litigation
Legal reps for the former MegaUpload company and its founder Kim Dotcom have requested that a postponement of litigation against their clients from the US movie and music industries be extended into 2015.

As previously reported, trade bodies for the big movie studios and record companies in the US sued Dotcom et al earlier this year over allegations the defendants encouraged and enabled rampant copyright infringement through their former file-transfer business.

But the one-time Mega chiefs are also facing a criminal prosecution over the same claims in the US, and their legal reps argued that it would be inappropriate for the civil actions to reach court before the criminal proceedings have gone through the motions.

Albeit with some conditions, the movie and music industries did not oppose that move to postpone their legal action, and so last month a judge froze their litigation until August, when an extradition hearing was due to take place in New Zealand, with US prosecutors trying to force Dotcom et al back to America.

However, that extradition hearing, originally due to take place in summer 2012, has now been pushed back to next February, so Team Mega want the postponement of civil litigation extended too. To next April, in fact.

It remains to be seen whether the judge approves this new postponement, though if the music and movie industries don't object he probably will.

Rob da Bank launches music supervision company
Bestival boss and DJ man Rob da Bank is teaming up with his manager Ben Turner to launch a new music supervision company called Earworm, which aims to curate music for TV, film, gaming and ad projects.

Confirming the new venture, da Bank is quoted by Music Week as saying: "Music supervision and scoring is something I've wanted to get into for many years and after flirting with that world through soundscaping the entire Bloomberg TV channel and re-scoring the soundtrack to the original 'King Kong' for the BBC, it seems like a good time to get properly stuck in".

He adds: "Putting music to picture is one of the most satisfying and sometimes tricky processes I've been involved with so I can't wait for the challenge and already have some mega projects lined up".

Google exec joins Spotify board
Google is taking over Spotify. Well, not really. Or maybe. Who knows? But according to Re/code, the internet giant's acting Chief Business Officer and long-time senior staffer, Omid Kordestani, has joined the streaming service's board of directors.

What's more, former Google exec Shishir Mehrotra is said to have become a 'special advisor' to Spotify recently. All of which suggests that something may be happening between the two companies. Or maybe it doesn't.

Google has been wandering around poking various streaming services with its shoe to see if they're worth buying (it recently forked out for Songza, of course). And then last week Daniel Ek said that his company had no imminent plans for an IPO, even though all signs would point towards Spotify definitely having imminent plans for an IPO.

Is it that much of a stretch to speculate that Spotify has dropped its IPO plans because Google's about to buy it? Yeah, probably.

BBC to air Tulisa drugs trial documentary next week
Tulisa Contostavlos is set to discuss her recent drugs trial, and its collapse, in a BBC Three documentary next week.

Due to air at 10pm on Monday, with repeats on Tuesday and Wednesday, as well as appearing on iPlayer, the Beeb explains: "The programme asks whether she has brought this upon herself or, in taking a look at the wider British tradition of 'build em up, knock em down', whether she is another high-profile young person destroyed by the tabloid 'sport' of entrapment?"

As previously reported, Tulisa was charged with supplying drugs to undercover Sun reporter Mazher Mahmood, aka 'the fake sheikh'. However, the trial against her, and her co-accused friend Michael Coombs, collapsed when it emerged that there were significant inconsistencies in some evidence given by Mahmood.

In other Tulisa drugs trial-related news, now that there is no more trial to be in contempt of court over, Simon Cowell has been able to issue a statement over claims made by the singer's PA that he is gay.

As previously reported, Cowell's lawyers consulted the Attorney General last week after a recording played in court revealed claims made by Gareth Varey about the music exec's sexuality, in which the Personal Assistant said that he knew men who had slept with the 'X-Factor' chief.

Making a statement at the time was not possible with the trial ongoing, but on Monday evening a spokesperson said: "Simon was referred to during the trial without forewarning, resulting in widespread media coverage of untrue claims regarding his private life".

He went on: "In 2014 the question of whether someone is or is not gay is antiquated. (As it happens he isn't, though if he were, he would simply have said so.) However, the issue was the false suggestion made by Mr Varey that Simon - who is renowned for his honesty and candidness - had thus not been truthful in the public arena and this is what we have been obliged to clarify".

  Approved: Got A Girl
The hard shoulder on the road to musical success is littered with the decaying corpses of actors who decided that making it in music as well couldn't be all that hard. Actually, quite a few of them suffered non-threatening injuries, fashioned themselves a stage out of twigs and the bones of others, and started endlessly bashing out bad blues songs, doomed to forever live in this weak metaphor I, like them, should have given up on long ago.

My point is, Mary Elizabeth Winstead is an actor. You've seen her in stuff. 'Final Destination 3', Quentin Tarantino's 'Death Proof', 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter' and the last two 'Die Hard' films. But best of all, was her starring role in the fantastic 'Scott Pilgrim Vs The World' as Ramona Flowers.

While making that film, she met producer Dan The Automator, who wrote parts of the film's score. They got chatting, and discovered a mutual appreciation of French yé-yé singers. One thing led to another, and rather than this idle chit-chat evaporating into thin air, they set themselves up as a regular Serge Gainsbourg and Françoise Hardy (please don't examine this analogy to hard either) and began working on music.

Apparently, so they say, just doing it for the fun of it initially, they gradually realised they had enough music on their hands to make an album that was actually pretty good. Because it turns out she has a good voice, and Dan The Automator, you may have already noted, is Dan The Automator.

Calling themselves Got A Girl, the album, 'I Love You But I Must Drive Off This Cliff Now', is out this week. And here's the single, 'Did We Live Too Fast'.

Racism to blame for Tupac musical closure, says star Saul Williams
The star of the Broadway musical based on the music of Tupac Shakur, 'Holler If Ya Hear Me', has blamed racism for its early closure. Rapper Saul Williams told Rolling Stone that "there was something deeply embedded in a lot of the reviews that went deeper than just a dislike of the play".

Elaborating further, he said: "The idea of having a play that centers around, 'How do you stop the cycles of gun violence in our community?' It's weird to hear someone feel like the story is generic when it's the front page of every fucking paper to date. And when you look at the reviews and compare them to everything from 'Do The Right Thing' to 'Menace II Society', it's always the same fucking review. There's actually a generic response when I don't think critics realise they're playing into the hands of something that runs deeper than how this made you feel".

The lukewarm reviews, he said, were then used by tickets sellers on Broadway to dissuade people from buying tickets to 'Holler', suggesting that it wasn't as good or fun as other shows on offer.

He added later: "There is no disconnect between [the play closing after two months] and Iggy Azalea, an Australian girl rapping with a southern accent, being number one on the charts. It's all related to where we are right now as a culture and within the culture of the arts".

M83 to re-issue first three albums
M83 is to re-issue his first three albums next month, plus a couple of EPs featuring remixes and B-sides in September.

Actually, listening to 2001's 'M83', 2003's 'Dead Cities, Red Seas, And Lost Ghosts' and 2005's 'Before the Dawn Heals Us' in one sitting is interesting in that it allows you to clearly track producer Anthony Gonzalez's development into the far more successful form fully realised on his 2011 fifth album 'Hurry Up, We're Dreaming'.

Then, depending on your view, you can either be glad that he stopped with all that droning nonsense or mourn the loss of something far more interesting that the crap he churns out now. Just so long as we all agree that 'Before The Dawn Heals Us' is his best work.

The three albums will all be re-released on 25 Aug. Then on 8 Sep will come three EPs featuring remixes and B-sides associated with each album, including work by Jackson And His Computerband and Boom Bip, amongst others.

Here's the video for 'Run Into Flowers' from 'Dead Cities, Red Seas, And Lost Ghosts'.

Tom Robinson announces Power In The Darkness 35th anniversary show
These days more commonly heard presenting on BBC 6 Music, Tom Robinson has announced that he will play a rare London show at The Jazz Café on 1 Aug.

The show will see Robinson perform his 'Power In The Darkness' album, marking 35 years since its original release in 1978. Actually, it's getting on for 36 year now but, like I say, he doesn't play that many gigs anymore.

Tickets are on sale here.

Vulpeck's silent album bags $20,000 in Spotify royalties
When Spotify asked Vulfeck to take down their silent album 'Sleepify' from the streaming service, the world mourned its loss. But it turns out that in the seven weeks it was up, the band bagged $20,000 in royalties.

As previously reported, while the Thom Yorkes of this world were complaining about the royalties artists receive from Spotify, Vufpeck launched a campaign attempting to play them to their advantage in March. The band released an album featuring ten entirely silent 30 second tracks. In order to fund their next tour, they said, they needed fans to play the album on repeat as they slept. Then, once the money came rolling in, they'd go and perform in the places where the release received most plays.

Spotify took it all in good humour initially, but come April the streaming service decided that the fun had to stop. The band took the album down and uploaded a statement on the matter as an EP (on Spotify).

According to Billboard, the tracks on the 'album' received 5.5 million plays while it was still online. And although the band seemed unsure back in May if they would get their money, they've now received a payout of $19,655.56, alongside smaller payments for their less popular non-silent releases.

It's not really enough for the world tour that you (or they) might have been hoping for, but keyboard player Jack Stratton told Billboard that they now plan to use the money to play in Los Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago, New York, and the band's former hometown of Ann Arbor.
