Quick Tip

John from Boston writes

Somehow I've lost the header for my task manager. All of the tabs are gone.

John, you may be running in tiny footprint mode. This can happen when you double-click empty space in the border around the tabs. To bring back the tabs and header, just double-click in the blank space around border.

Your header and tabs will return!

When the sample for this came into the warehouse, it seemed so light and small, I wondered how it could protect hands from high heat. But let me tell you, IT WORKS. We tested it ourselves in the WorldStart Test Kitchens, which are located in the kitchen of my house. Let me tell you, I put this thing through the paces.

First of all, I fired up the oven to a blazing 500 DEGREES and put a cast-iron Dutch oven in there. Nothing holds heat like cast iron and in no time that pot was smokin' hot. I even tested it with an instant-read thermometer to make sure it was 500 degrees. I slipped on the mitt, touched the handles, lifted the lid and I didn't feel a thing. AMAZING!

I usually don't like oven gloves, because they're big and bulky and, for me, make it harder to get a firm hold on pot handles and lids. I usually go with towel for the control, but they aren't that effective against heat and I've got the scars on my hands to prove it. And I may or may not have set one or two of them on fire.

The slim design of this glove slides over your fingers for complete protection, but still gives you total flexibility. I was skeptical that something this lightweight could really protect my fingers, but IT WORKED PERFECTLY. I didn't feel a thing.

It's also great for stirring. Nobody likes grabbing a hot spoon, but have you ever tried to stir with a bulky oven glove? I even tested it out by flipping a steak using only my hands. The surface that touches the pot is specially ridged for a firm grip. Great control and my fingers didn't feel a thing!

Best of all, this is completely washable. I was making kind of sticky pan sauce last night and got a little on the glove. It rinsed right off under the tap. A towel or a cloth oven mitt would have required a round in the washer. You can even put these right in the dishwasher. It's so CONVENIENT!

It also worked perfectly for picking up a cookie sheet from the oven. I will warn you, that if you have any heavy pots or cookie sheets, it's best to buy two of them.

But for only $4.97 , why not? You'll probably want to get four in case you have a helper in the kitchen.

Everybody who works here wants at least two for their kitchen, but they'll have to wait to see if there are any left over, because I'm giving you first crack at this special deal for a limited time only.

5 Free Office Suites

Want to do a little writing, but need something beyond the free version of WordPad already installed on your Windows computer? Not interested in paying for the full version of Microsoft Office or for an Office 365 subscription? Well, I've got alternatives and they won't cost you a single penny. Just click on the title of the suite to go to a download page.

First, let's check out your cloud-based options:

Microsoft Office Online

Office Online offers the ability to read, create and edit Word, Excel, Powerpoint and OneNote documents. Just log onto Outlook.com with a Microsoft account and start working. If you have an Outlook.com, HotMail, MSN or LiveMail address, you already have an account. If not, it only takes a few minutes to create one.

Your account also comes with 15GB of cloud storage in OneDrive. Of course, the downside is that it is cloud-based. So you will need an Internet connection to work. The up side is that since it's cloud-based, you can open it on any computer. These are fully-functional Office documents that you can save to your computer and that will open in other versions of Office.

Google Drive

Google Drive is free for anyone with a Gmai address and offers the ability to create documents, presentations, spreadsheets, forms and also comes with a basic drawing program.

Google Drive also offers 15 GB of free cloud storage. Like Office Online, it is cloud-based. You'll need an Internet connection to work, but you also have the flexibility to access your documents from other computers or devices.

On The Move

Google Kills Quickoffice

Google is quietly killing off its Quickoffice App. In a brief update on the Google Apps blog, the company said that the app will be unpublished from Google Play and the Apple App Store in the coming weeks.

Existing users can continue to use the app, but there will be no new features added and new users cannot install the app. The company says the functions of Quickoffice have been integrated into the Google Docs, Sheets and Slides apps.

Quickoffice hasn't been around for very long, (it's just over a year old) and Google made it free to all users back in the fall of 2013. The app is highly regarded and allows you to create and edit documents, spreadsheets and presentation files that are compatible with Microsoft office as well as access Google Drive and view PDFs. The app has nearly 100,000 5-star reviews in the Google Play store and according to Google, more than 10 million installations on devices.

Users can download separate free apps for...

From The Archives

John writes:

A question for tech guy: Cell phones have a good internet connection, why can't a laptop use that connection?

John, I hope you don't mind if the tech gal answers you. The answer is, a laptop can use the same provider as your cell phone as long as that company offers data plans and many people use a 3G or 4G connection for their laptop. The catch is that mobile data plans through your cell provider can be much more expensive that through a traditional ISP. You will also see limits on the amount of data, usually around 5GB per month, in contrast my Internet service with my cable company allows me 100 GB a month with the lowest-priced tier. If you don't use a lot of data during the month, the restrictions may not be an issue for you.

Now if you'd like to occasionally use your cell connection for your laptop, many smart phones can be turned into a mobile WiFi hotspot, but that normally comes with an additional monthly cost. You can also purchase a mobile hotspot, small devices that allow you to connect multiple devices. These can be used either with...

Amanda's Coolsite

Surfly

I discovered this site when I was looking for a way to show my mom how to use a web site remotely. She lives an hour and a half away, so it's not always convenient to just hop in the car and show her something that will take less than five minutes of explanation, but it would definitely be easier to show her then tell her. That's where Surfly comes in!

When you arrive at the site I recommend that you start your adventure by clicking the Take a Tour button. This will play a short video that explains what the site does and how you can use it. Then it will offer you a link to Try Surfly now, this will whisk you off to the log in form where you can also register for an account. If you're not quite ready to register, you can scroll down the main page for more information on the service or use the handy menu at the top of the page to check out the Intro, Features, Partners, Pricing, and Blog.

If you are ready to register, it's easy! Just click the Register link on the log in pop up, and then provide your e-mail address and create a password. Then go check your e-mail address for the activation link which will whisk you back to the site to log in.

Then you can start a session, enter the URL of the site you want to browse, and it will give you a link that you can use to share your browsing experience with your friends or family. And then all you have to do is browse as you normally would to demonstrate whatever it is you want to show the viewer you invited.

They'll see whatever you see and if you click on a link it will take them there too. This makes this an excellent tool to show someone how to use a website, or to interactively plan a trip, or project. I'm looking forward to using this for group work or even to plan the Dialogue in the spring.

The really nice thing is you don't need any extra software in order to use it. Why don't you check it out for yourself today?

One More Big Deal

THIS IS SO SWEET!

We just found the coolest thing EVER for anyone who likes to listen to music while they workout!

First off, let's talk about the frustrating problem we ALL have with earbuds when we're trying to exercise - THEY FALL OUT!

I mean, let's face it, you can be walking, running, jogging, jumping jacks, weight lifting, heck, even cycling over a rough surface and your earbuds are constantly needing readjustment - or just plain falling out.

And headphones? - They're even WORSE!

And that's just no fun.

In fact, it's really pretty annoying.

This headband has two fantastic mini speakers built right in. You simply slip it on and you instantly have music that actually stays PUT!

The headband keeps the little speakers right over your ears, so you can run, jog, or even jump rope with no fear of them falling out.

Oh, and it sounds GREAT too - it's like a little trip to paradise for your ears every time you put 'em on!

And the best part - you don't have to jam them into your ears to make 'em stay put!

Plus, the headband is super comfortable to wear and the fabric is made specifically to wick moisture away! (Hey, nothing worse then sweat running into your eyes, right?)

As if all the above wasn't enough, you can also use it with most smartphones to make hands free phone calls!

Just plug it into your phone and when a call comes in, the audio gets pushed through your headphones and the built in mic picks up your voice! Never miss another important call during your workout - AMAZING!!

Personal Experience From Steve:

I love to listen to audio books or music when I run - the only problem is, like so many of us, I have an issue with my earbuds falling out. I've tried all kinds too - they just don't stay put the way I'd like them to - and most of the time they just pop out. When I saw this, I had to try it.

And I've never looked back!

I can now jog with absolutely no worry about the earbuds popping out. The headband wicks moisture away just like it says it does, plus it sounds way better than any of the earbuds I've tried. I have to say, this is my favorite workout accessory ever and I can't recommend it highly enough!

~Steve

Plus, if you don't love 'em like we do you can send them back within 60 days for a refund!

Talk about nothing to lose.

We're talking just $6.97!

Talk about a deal you can't refuse! Hurry to the site and check 'em out - before they sell out:

PS - These are probably the best way EVER to listen to music while you exercise - and you just can't go wrong for the price. Give 'em a try - you'll be glad you did!

Perfect Pounce

I really love coyotes. I know, not everyone is a fan, but I can't help it – they're one of my favorite animals. I think the reason for this favoritism might stem from my admiration of the aerial pounce they sometimes use when pursuing prey. Their approach is decidedly cat-like in its execution and incredibly graceful to watch. For example…(More)

Stormy Sunset At Sleeping Bear

Talk about a last chance! We had been trying for three days to get something – anything – at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It doesn't seem to be a great morning location, so that left us with just three chances - one for each evening we were there. The first evening saw...(More)

Daybreak

The waterfall you see in the photo is the final plunge for Chapel Creek before it empties into Lake Superior. It always makes an interesting cut through the sand – but – you just never quite know what path it'll take. Most of the time, it likes to wind off to the right, but a gale force weather event pushed the sand back in, making the new cut anybody's guess. Even with that wildcard in mind, I decided to...(More)
