Quick Tip

Matt from Sidney, OH asks:
How do I delete a location in my iPhone's weather app? I don't live anywhere near Cupertino, California! It's driving me crazy!!

Hey, Matt – getting rid of a weather location in iOS is easy… once you know which way to swipe. We're so used to swiping to the right when we want to uncover hidden options in iOS, but for some reason the weather location app does things a bit differently.

Backwards, even…

So, if you're wanting to delete a location, simply swipe to the left instead. This will bring up a Delete button, and you can go about your merry business!

Pretty simple – although probably not what you were expecting, huh?

Take care!

Links Not Working In Word 2013

So it turns out that I had a tech tip question for myself last Friday night:

Cynthia from Ohio writes:

I was putting together a family reunion document for my father-in-law to e-mail to relatives. I used Microsoft Word 2013′s templates to create it and I put in a link that people could click to get the directions.

But the link only works if you press Ctrl + Click and not when you just click on it. What gives?

Well, Self… After a little searching I found the cause of what was troubling me, myself and I. In Word 2013, links default to Ctrl + Click to open instead of just a click. The reasoning is that it makes the links easier to edit. I've previously had the experience of links opening when I was attempting to edit them, so I can see their point. But there is a quick fix.

Open your document and click the File tab at the top of the page.

Choose Options.

The Word Options window will open. Select Advanced on the left.

Make sure to uncheck the box next to Use CTRL + Click to follow link. Then choose OK.

Now users can just click or tap the link in your document to go to the site.

On The Move

Ron writes:

How about giving the full story about storage drive size? Mention that HD makers report in powers of 10 rather than powers of 2. And do the math to show how much we are getting "ripped off" now that we are getting into TB and higher local storage.

When we were dealing with KB and MB the difference was no big deal. But now that we are regularly dealing with GB and even multiple TB we are being significantly mislead.

Frankly, I think it is time for computing to take the step to report in powers of 10. We have enough "spare" computing power to convert powers of 2 to 10′s. It only makes sense since "people" think in powers of 10.

hether or not people are getting ripped off is up for them to decide, but I can break down why storage drives are labeled this way.

When you buy a hard drive, it will be listed as, for example, 100 GB, 500 GB, or 1 TB, a nice even number. However, when you get it home and look at the actual size available, you will notice a difference. A terabyte drive, for instance, will show 931 GB. Here's why:

From The Archives

We've mentioned this tip recently more than once, but people are still falling for it. We talked to a caller just the other day, whose friend fell for it and now that friend's computer has been so infected with so much malware that the drive will probably need to be reformatted. Plus these crooks could have access to all of the friend's personal information. So, spread the word about this scam. It's been happening for years and it keeps happening.

Carolyn writes:

I just received a call from Microsoft located in Las Vegas, the man had a very broken accent, telling me that I have a Microsoft Computer problem and I should be sitting at my computer for further instructions. I told him I have a Dell computer with Windows 7, but he insisted I had a Microsoft computer and was calling to fix a Microsoft problem. Are you aware of Microsoft actually contacting customers to fix a problem with Microsoft? He was very persistent and called back again after I told him I would not participate. This is probably the third call I have received. I would be very interested to know the circumstances of this call.

Carolyn, you are smart to be suspicious. To quote a very wise person, Judge Judy in fact : "If something doesn't make sense, then it's not true." Nothing about this call makes sense. How would Microsoft even have your phone number? And how would they know if there was an issue with your computer? Issues with Windows are fixed using update available in the Windows update center, not by calling people up on the phone.

You'd have a hard enough time getting in touch with someone at Microsoft if you called them for help, so they aren't calling up people at home out of the blue to fix issues on their computer. Your caller is not one of the cheerful coffee-drinking Microsoft employees the company displays in the careers section of their website, but a scammer. (most likely calling from overseas.)

Carolyn, you should report these calls to the police. This persistent scammer is targeting you.

Microsoft warns about a scam...

Chrys from Kansas writes:

I've heard you talk about the free Microsoft OneDrive storage and how you can add it to your computer so it shows up just like another drive. How do I do that?

If you have a Windows 8.1 computer, OneDrive will already show up as an option by default when you save or open drives.

To add the OneDrive App to your Windows 7 computer click here to download the free app. You cannot add OneDrive to a Windows XP system. A copy of your OneDrive will be downloaded to your computer and will sync with your OneDrive. Changes to your OneDrive folder from any device will also be updated to your device. You can access OneDrive in your File Explorer to...

Supercook

Welcome to Supercook! This site is an amazing resource that lets you input the ingredients you have on hand and shows you recipes that you can make with them.

I find this is super helpful for those days just before you go grocery shopping when you are running out of things and need some help figuring out what to make.

How does it work? Simple! Just start by selecting ingredients from the Do You Have? box and it will start generating recipes of things you can make. You can add to these ingredients by entering your own in the My Ingredients text field. Just start typing an ingredient and choose it from the list that pops up.

As you're selecting ingredients, recipes are loading on the right side of the page. See one you like? Just click on it to be whisked away to the recipe page. In Google Chrome these opened in a new tab, so I didn't lose my search.

Want to save recipes for a later date? You'll need to register for a free account – click Login/Register at the top of the page, then provide an e-mail address and create a password, and click the Register button – then just sign in, and click the star button on the recipe you want to save.

This is a great way to make meals from the ingredients you have on hand! Check it out today!

One More Big Deal

There are two must-have accessories for almost any computer. One is a USB hub and the other is a memory card reader. Well, I've found an amazing little device that gives you both in one convenient package and a price you won't believe.

Everything plugs into a USB port these days. From a wireless mouse and keyboard to speakers to external drives. It doesn't take long before you start running out of ports.

This great device turns one port into three INSTANTLY. There's no disc to load, it's all plug and play!

Does your computer have your USB ports stuck on the side where you can't see them? Put them in plain view where you can easily plug in a flash drive!

Best of all, this is "hot swappable" - that means you don't have to power it down to plug and unplug devices!

How much easier does that make your life? I happen to have one of these small tablet Windows 8.1 computers that has only one USB port and not a whole lot in the way of hard drive space. This is going to make my life so much easier!

Memory cards are the ultimate in convenience. No digging for cords to plug your camera into your computer. Which cord do you use? Where did you leave it? Is the dog chewing on your cord? Just pop the memory card out of your camera and put it in the card reader and you can drag and drop your photos in a flash!

Which memory cards can this read? A better question is what CAN'T it read?

  • CompactFlash I (CF)
  • CompactFlash II
  • Microdrive
  • MultiMediaCard (MMC)
  • Secure Digital (SD)
  • Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC)
  • Smart Media (SM)
  • Memory Stick
  • Memory Stick Pro

And if you have an adapter:

  • *Memory Stick Duo
  • *Memory Stick Pro Duo
  • *miniSD
  • *RS-MMC

And check out the size! Only 3" by 3.5"! It weighs next-to-nothing and fits right in the palm of your hand. It's easy to just slip it in to your laptop case, and if you're using it on a desktop - it takes up almost NO space!

Windows XP - Windows 7 - Windows 8.1 ... Hey it even works with ME & 2000 if you have a really old computer hanging around. Just plug it in to an available USB Drive and you instantly have 3 USB ports and can read almost any memory card. All for less than $5!

You can't beat that deal with a stick! To get your All-in-One Card Reader & USB Port for a special limited-time only price of $4.97, click the store link below and add it to your cart right now.

Everyone who sees these wants one, so get them while they last. If there are any left on Friday , the special price expires and the price jumps back to $8.97

Perfect Pounce

I really love coyotes. I know, not everyone is a fan, but I can't help it – they're one of my favorite animals. I think the reason for this favoritism might stem from my admiration of the aerial pounce they sometimes use when pursuing prey. Their approach is decidedly cat-like in its execution and incredibly graceful to watch. For example…(More)

Stormy Sunset At Sleeping Bear

Daybreak

The waterfall you see in the photo is the final plunge for Chapel Creek before it empties into Lake Superior. It always makes an interesting cut through the sand – but – you just never quite know what path it'll take. Most of the time, it likes to wind off to the right, but a gale force weather event pushed the sand back in, making the new cut anybody's guess. Even with that wildcard in mind, I decided to...(More)
