JON CLEARY AND NIGEL HALL PAY TRIBUTE TO BOBBY WOMACK

Jon Cleary happened to be hanging out with Nigel Hall when they heard that Bobby Womack had passed away. The two world class musicians paid their respects by covering one of Womack's songs and putting it out for free.

WHO'S "INDEPENDENT" ANYWAY?

Following up on the tragic fatal shooting last week on Frenchmen, we follow up with another tragic incident on Bourbon Street, where not one, but 10 people were injured, some of them critically...which made me wonder: how can we celebrate Independence Day if we're not really free from fear?
 ----------------------------------------------------------

Here are the results of last week's poll:

Which musician or music business person in New Orleans would do the best job as if they got involved in local political office?

IVAN NEVILLE: MUSIC VIDEO ACTOR

Ivan Neville recently starred in a video for the New York rock band The Young Presidents. Neville sang lead vocals on the song "Time," and the video for the song features Neville hanging out in the French Quarter, reading OffBeat, and having a good time.

MORE NEWS:

Speaking of Ivan Neville, Dumpstaphunk will play the grand opening of a new music venue in Biloxi this weekend.

June Yamagishi and June Victory will take the stage as "June Squared." "May Cubed" is up next.

Sarah Jaffe will play Southport Hall with the Polyphonic Spree July 10. Happiness will ensue.

We're giving away tickets to the Now Playing showcase at Essence and to see Bassnectar in Baton Rouge.

Prince will perform at
Essence Festival's main stage on Friday July 4 at 10:30 p.m. at the

Tony Bazley

"All my life, I been a jazz, bebop drummer," says 79-year-old Pigeon Town native
Tony "Oulabula" Bazley in OffBeat's Look-Ka Py Py Podcast. Over the course of his six-and-a-half decade career, Bazley manned the kit for jazz legends such as Eric Dolphy, Dexter Gordon and Wes Montgomery as well as several others. Like many of his era, Bazley road began at the famed Dew Drop Inn. Listen to a part of New Orleans jazz history, hosted by Zachary Young.
