ATP cancels Jabberwocky festival with just three days notice
Independent promoter ATP has announced the cancellation of this weekend's Jabberwocky festival in London. Due to take place over two days at London's ExCel Centre, James Blake and Neutral Milk Hotel were set to headline.

Announced in February, the event was a partnership between ATP, Primavera and Pitchfork, and had also booked cool indie types like Panda Bear, Caribou, Thee Oh Sees, Kurt Vile, Liars and Darkside to perform. However, in a statement yesterday, ATP chief Barry Hogan said that projected losses had the event gone ahead would "have 100% been the end of ATP".

In the statement, published on the ATP website and emailed to ticketholders yesterday afternoon, Hogan wrote: "We have put everything into promoting Jabberwocky, and despite healthy ticket sales, all our efforts could not take those sales to the point that we needed to finally stage the event. Over the past month and all the way up until this moment we have tried every possible course of action to follow through in delivering Jabberwocky to you, but the position we unfortunately find ourselves in, as a result of a succession of events that have lost money in an increasingly aggressive festival market, means we are no longer able to do so".

He continued: "In the past ATP has weathered losses such as this and gone on with the show, taking huge direct financial blows as an independent company. But on this occasion, with an event of this scale and the high production costs that come with it - if we had gone ahead; it would have 100% been the end of ATP. We do not take this decision lightly and it was the hardest we've ever had to make".

Stressing that all other scheduled ATP events, including the ATP Iceland festival, will go ahead as planned, he concluded: "We apologise to all the people we have let down from fans to the bands, the venue and all the suppliers. We have tried everything in our power to save this event and continue, but the losses we have recently incurred have unfortunately been too much for a company of our size to bear".

As with the recent collapse of The Camden Crawl company, bands and especially suppliers could now lose out from the cancellation of this event. Following the publication of ATP's statement yesterday, the festival's PR company The Zeitgeist Agency revealed it had already been affected, adding that there had been signs that things were not going well with Jabberwocky for several months. The firm added that it is now suing in an attempt to claim unpaid fees from ATP parent company Willwal Ltd.

Zeitgeist director Jamie Stockwood said: "Willwal Ltd have failed to pay us for several months. We have tried hard to overcome this situation and find solutions, but Willwal's representatives have revealed to us in writing that they used the funds destined for us in order to protect payments for venue and artists, rather than settle essential and agreed amounts to our company. It would appear that Willwal Ltd has been experiencing and is continuing to experience cash flow difficulties".

He continued: "This situation has left our company with no alternative but to pursue Willwal Ltd by instituting legal proceedings on the 20 Jul to recover the substantial debt, to which Willwal Ltd have not responded. This is a course of action which as you can imagine, we have been very reluctant to take".

Meanwhile, there is now also a dispute over refunds with Jabberwocky's lead ticketing partner, Dash Tickets. Although ATP said in its statement yesterday that "refunds will be available to all customers at the point of purchase", this does not chime with Dash's terms and conditions of sale, which state that "refunds are at the sole discretion and control of the presenter" and therefore it "accepts no responsibility for the refund of tickets in any situation".

Dash says that all monies from ticket sales through its platform have already been passed on to Willwal, and it is now also taking legal advice on how best to reclaim those funds, along with unpaid fees. The statement begins: "Our entire team has poured immense effort into helping ATP with their ticketing programme over the past several months, investing considerable time, money and energy, all in good faith".

However, it continues: "Our trust in ATP seems to have been misplaced, as their emails to fans and customers today concerning refunds have become deliberately misleading. It is for this reason that we feel compelled to make it clear that Dash has given to ATP all funds that Dash received for ticket sales to Jabberwocky. In addition to giving ATP all the ticketing funds, Dash has made substantial advances to ATP which remain unpaid, as do considerable fees for the work we have undertaken on their behalf".

This is the latest incident in a rocky few years for ATP. In 2012, the company through which its various operations was then run, ATP Concerts Ltd, went into voluntary liquidation, with Willwal set up to take on it assets. Having already scaled back its long-running holiday camp festivals, after a fall out with Butlins in 2012, it was finally announced that it was putting a stop to them entirely in 2013. An attempted alliance with MAMA also never got off the ground.

Meanwhile, a grand plan to forge ahead with city-based festivals has had mixed results, particularly in the UK. Although ATP events continue to be very well received when they go ahead, last year a Grizzly Bear-curated edition of the I'll Be Your Mirror festival at Alexandra Palace in London was postponed and then cancelled. And now Jabberwocky has been pulled just three days before it was due to begin.

On a more positive note, a number of promoters are working to put on shows in place of the cancelled festival this weekend, finding slots for the suddenly available bands on the Jabberwocky bill at gigs around the city. A Facebook page collating all of these events, under the title 'The Jabberwocky Fallout Party' has been set up, while ticketing company Billeto has said that it will not charge a booking fee on any tickets for such shows sold through its platform.

Amongst those newly scheduled shows, Kurt Vile and Nils Frahm will co-headline a show at London's Village Underground on Saturday, while headliner Neutral Milk Hotel has moved to The Forum on Friday, with support from smaller Jabberwocky booking The Ex.

Indian streaming service Saavn bags Warner deal
Indian streaming service Saavn has signed a new licensing deal with Warner Music covering its recordings catalogue, meaning it now has agreements in place with all three majors.

Originally set up as a Bollywood music service, co-founder Rishi Malhotra told The Next Web: "We want to be the first stop for music in India, especially on a smartphone, whatever you are listening to. That means going beyond Bollywood and having Western music too".

The service has over ten million active users and recently attracted Hong Kong-based hedge fund Steadview Capital as a new investor. And while the company's current focus is on the 70% of its users who are based in India, there are plans to become more active in some territories where it sees increased engagement - the Middle East being one potential target for growth.

With its executive team now based in New York, Malhotra recently took over as CEO from Vinodh Bhat, who becomes President and Chief Strategy Officer. Explaining the changes, Malhotra said: "We have built the business together for over five years, and always made the best decisions. As we move into a product-focused approach, it made sense to align our core strengths - that's a global sales focus for Vin and a CEO role for me".

Although it has deals with the major record labels in place, it's not clear what agreements, if any, it has done with indie labels or publishers of any size. A request for information on this was not immediately returned.

Record industry considering global street day for new releases
Record industries worldwide are being encouraged to adopt a standard release day, to simplify things for global digital platforms and to remove frustrations amongst consumers in countries where new releases go on sale later in the week.

In each country, most labels put new releases on sale on the same day, for example Monday in the UK, Tuesday in the US and Friday in Australia. Pre-digital the inconsistencies from country to country didn't really matter (indeed releases wouldn't necessarily always be in the same week worldwide anyway), so each market picked a day of the week that seemed to perform best in terms of sales, and which complemented local marketing, media and chart strategies.

But some argue that in the digital age regional variations in release times don't make sense, because even if marketing campaigns are still managed on a local level, online hype is global, and differing release dates make social media messaging confusing. Plus some argue that in countries with later in the week release days, piracy is higher because as soon as tracks are legitimately available in the UK, they start circulating via unofficial channels in countries like Australia, where fans are pissed off they can't currently access tunes via iTunes and the streaming platforms.

According to Billboard, a universal release date of Friday is currently preferred by the majors and most of the digital music platforms, and some insiders reckon that could become the global street date by next summer. Though word has it some high street retailers and indies in countries with an early-in-the-week release day are not so keen on the idea, because they benefit from a flurry of hardline music fans, eager to get the latest releases first, early in the week, with more casual music consumers following at the weekend.

One label exec admitted to Billboard: "This global streetdate is necessary for the industry but unfortunately it will be awkward for the physical retailers to change their ways of doing business. Now, they could have two-thirds of their sales in one day".

Mat Zo starts online label Mad Zoo
The man, artist and dance DJ Mat Zo has established a new label, Mad Zoo, the name of which is spelt kind of like his name. So that's nice. The twist with Mad Zoo is that, in the interest of immediacy (apparently), all Mad Zoo singles and EPs etc will be available, digitally, for free the week they're released. The first freebie, which arrived this week, is Mat Zo's The Knocks-featuring new track 'Get Down 2 Get Up' and B-side 'Left To Right'.

The DJ, aka Matan Zohar, says: "I've always wanted a quicker outlet for my music, so awhile ago I decided to release some of my music for free on SoundCloud. The only problem with this is if I want to license the track out, or even put the track on YouTube, there has to be a label structure around it. The plans for Mad Zoo had been underway for years, so I decided to use the venture as a new way for me to release music quickly, yet still have infrastructure around it. I will still continue to work with other labels in the conventional way".

Zohar, who released 'Damage Control', his first LP as Mat Zo, late last year via the London-based Anjunabeats, has also now signed off on a track titled 'Robots Never Die' for forthcoming sci-fi film 'Robot Overlords'. The song features on the end credits of the movie, which will hit cinemas later this year.

The Agency Group acquires The Bobby Roberts Company
Gig booking powerhouse The Agency Group has announced the acquisition of country music talent agency The Bobby Roberts Company. The Nashville-based firm represents artists including Merle Haggard, John Anderson, and Marty Stuart.

Gavin O'Reilly, CEO of The Agency Group said: "We see Nashville as a vital music hub and an essential ingredient in our global strategy. The addition of The Bobby Roberts Company's roster to our list of internationally acclaimed country artists solidifies our place within the genre. We are delighted and honoured to carry on the goodwill and proud legacy built by the incomparable Bobby Roberts and to welcome a group of talented agents".

Mr Bobby Roberts himself added: "All of us at The Bobby Roberts Company are very pleased to become a part of The Agency Group family through this exciting merger. We now have the resources, tools and additional agents to better serve and enhance the touring needs of our artists. The possibilities are endless for our roster with The Agency Group's team of professionals and their various departments, and under the combined leadership of Nick Meinema and Lance Roberts we will have much to offer artists, managers and the overall Nashville music community".

Under the merger, BRC's Lance Roberts will be made Vice President of the Agency Group's Nashville division, while booking agents Travis James, Josh Garrett, Matt Rizor and Alec Vidmar will join the office along with their respective rosters. Bobby Roberts himself will remain on board as a strategic consultant.

City Showcase confirms 'Finding The Future' seminars
City Showcase, the new talent programme perhaps best known for its central London festivals, is to host 'Finding The Future', a series of conference-style debates, presentations and even live 'sessions' taking place on 13-15 Nov at the Regent Street Apple Store.

The idea with the event is to give aspiring artists and industry types a chance to trade ideas on A&R, songwriting, marketing, brand partnerships and generally 'doing it DIY', both with each other and with an expert panel of speakers, not least PRS For Music Chair Guy Fletcher, ASCAP's Sean Devine, Band2Market's Matt Dixon, and CMU Business Editor Chris Cooke.

That lot are chairing the various talks, with RCA's Colin Barlow, Fierce Panda boss Simon Williams, 4AD Creative Director Ed Horrox, Island Records man Alex Boateng, Melvin Benn of Festival Republic and Dawbell press boss Richard Dawes all appearing as panellists.

'Finding The Future' kicks off at 3pm each day, with "heavily tipped" new acts set to play live between 8-8.30pm.

  Approved: New Build
It's remarkable how the various Hot Chip side projects and collaborations often prove way more interesting than Hot Chip themselves. Like The 2 Bears, New Build are a case in point. Their 2012 debut album 'Yesterday Was Lived And Lost' was a fine collection of sharp new wave and sleek electro and 'The Sunlight' - the first taster from follow-up album 'Pour It On' - suggests equally fine things to come from the London trio.

There's a modest touch of Kraftwerk's 'Europe Endless' about 'The Sunlight', as it shimmers with a nebula of pulsing synths, whilst the multi-tracked vocals of Al Doyle add equally lush textures to suitably hypnotic effect. Too blissed-out for dancing to, yet too cerebral for background music to chill out to as well, 'The Sunlight' reveals more of its palatial beauty with every listen.

New Build having signed to Sunday Best, 'Pour It On' is out on 20 Oct. You can listen to 'The Sunlight' here.

Say Lou Lou announce lucid LP
Pop sorority Say Lou Lou have said that they're going to release their first LP, 'Lucid Dreaming', on 2 Feb 2015. Which I'd say means that that is exactly what's going to happen, like it or not.

To go with this exciting news, the SLL girls have released a new single titled 'Games For Girls', featuring son-of-Norway Lindstrøm. This "thrilling collaboration" is available to listen to now, with a video on its way soon.

Whilst they're taking their sweet time in releasing the LP, the duo and sing live slightly more imminently, at London's Heaven on 4 Dec.

FKA Twigs confirms October shows
Snap-and-crackle popstar FKA Twigs is making moves 'ATM' with her first album, the not-shockingly-titled 'LP1', which is available right now, and is allegedly the best thing since sliced bread.

And bearing that in mind, she's added a few headline shows into the mix, which, since Twigs is so into the 'visual' side of things, probably will prove an unusual watch.

Tickets went on instant pre-sale yesterday, and will be available on general sale this Friday. The dates are:

2 Oct: Brighton The Dome
3 Oct: Birmingham, The Library
4 Oct: Manchester, RNCM Theatre
6 Oct: Glasgow, Oran Mor
8 Oct: London, Hackney Empire
9 Oct: Bristol, Trinity

Finally here's a giant Twigs and several mini Twigses dancing in an 'interpretative' style in the clip for 'LP1' single 'Two Weeks'.

Solid Steel and NTS win big at International Online Radio Awards
London-based station NTS Radio and the Solid Steel Radio Show have taken the top prizes at the inaugural Online Radio Awards, lovechild of Mixcloud and the International Radio Festival.

Ninja Tune's one-time Kiss FM show Solid Steel and NTS were chosen by a professional panel from a public-voted shortlist of shows and stations from all over the world, winning Overall Best Online Radio Show and Station respectively. Reps from both will be flown off to Zurich and have their shows aired at this year's International Radio Fest, which takes place on 3-7 Sep.

Commenting on the winners, Monocle 24 boss Paul Noble, who sat on the panel with the likes of Billboard Features Editor Brad Wete, the British Council's Phil Catchpole, and director of indie radio co Folded Wing Karen Pearson, observes: "I can't think of a more formative listening experience than Solid Steel on Kiss FM in the 90s. Recklessly surfing across boundaries in search of the funk, the show introduced me to pretty much every great artist and scene I've gone on to love. A well-deserved win and so pleased to see the show still going strong 25 years on".

And: "Once again NTS are punching way above their weight. This station has taken the underground sound of London into corners of the globe thanks to their broadminded selection of DJs and tasty production values. A couple of weeks last year were spent on a road trip in Texas listening to them streaming live on my phone in perfect quality. Hats off to the team for making it all happen".

Meanwhile Mixcloud co-founder Nikhil Shah, keen to champion all the contenders it seems, says: "We decided to start these awards to showcase and celebrate the amazing talent in the online radio industry, and the winners are testament to that. We urge you to have a dig through the winners and the shortlist as there are some amazing shows and stations there to inspire your ears!"

Abbey Road crossing may be allocated lollypop lady
Westminster Council is considering employing staff to ensure the safety of the swathes of tourists who come to mimic The Beatles' 'Abbey Road' album cover by having their photos taken walking across it. The road not the album cover.

This isn't the first time concerns have been raised, with suggestions back in 2009 that the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing that appears on the album artwork could be removed in order to cut down accidents. However, that move was rejected, and the crossing was later granted Grade II listed status, ensuring its permanent place outside the Abbey Road recording studios.

A Westminster Council spokesperson told the BBC that councillors were now considering employing a lollypop lady (or man) to halt traffic while people cross. Though that would presumably mean that the florescent jacketed, reflective sign holding official would also have to be in the Beatles fans' photos, which might put people off actually wanting to cross at all. Though that would also be job done in safety terms I suppose.

Anyway, the spokesperson added: "Local Abbey Road ward councillors raised their residents' concerns about the number of tourists spilling into the road and traffic near the crossing at the height of the summer season, and put forward various suggestions, asking the city council to review pedestrian safety and crowd management. However, no proposals have been agreed by the council, nor the review completed".

Until there is someone on hand to stop cars from mowing down tourists on the crossing, you can watch them risk life and limb via this webcam.
