MEP meets with jailed Pirate Bay founder
Julia Reda, a Member of the European Parliament, was due to meet with one-time Pirate Bay spokesman Peter Sunde in jail yesterday, telling reporters before the visit that his incarceration was proof "our justice system has completely lost touch with digital culture". Though Reda is a representative of The Pirate Party in the European Parliament, so that's not too surprising.

As previously reported, Sunde was sentenced to eight months in jail in the Swedish courts for his role in enabling rampant copyright infringement through The Pirate Bay. He pursued every possible route of appeal, and then avoided the Swedish police, before being arrested in the country earlier this year and taken to the middle-level Västervik Norra prison.

Of course, The Pirate Party, although not officially linked to The Pirate Bay, is a long-time supporter of the popular file-sharing platform, which itself grew out of a political movement that advocated dramatic change to copyright rules.

Confirming she would be meeting with Sunde in jail, according to Torrentfreak Reda said: "I am visiting Peter Sunde in prison today to express my support. The unnecessarily harsh sentence he was given illustrates that our justice system has completely lost touch with digital culture. And the tactic of draconian deterrence against file-sharing has failed!"

Reda said she'd also discuss with Sunde the conditions at the jail where he is incarcerated, something the one time Pirate Bay man has already criticised.

Cliff Richard distances himself from 'false' sex crime claims
Cliff Richard has labelled claims relating to an alleged historical sex offence as "completely false", after his Berkshire home was searched by police yesterday.

Richard, who no longer lives in the UK, was not in attendance as police searched the house as part of an investigation into the alleged sexual assault of a boy, aged under sixteen at the time, in the 1980s. Having received a complaint from the alleged victim only recently, South Yorkshire Police are looking into claims that the then-minor was abused by an adult at a 1985 Christian faith rally, led by evangelical preacher Billy Graham, at Bramall Lane in Sheffield. No arrests have been made.

Releasing a statement to the press following reports on the raid of his home, and wider allegations, Richard, who's currently staying in Portugal, said: "For many months I have been aware of allegations against me of historic impropriety which have been circulating online. The allegations are completely false. Up until now I have chosen not to dignify the false allegations with a response, as it would just give them more oxygen".

The singer added: "However, the police attended my apartment in Berkshire today without notice, except it would appear to the press. I am not presently in the UK but it goes without saying that I will cooperate fully should the police wish to speak to me. Beyond stating that today's allegation is completely false it would not be appropriate to say anything further until the police investigation has concluded".

TEED raises labels label, releases weird T-shirt
Child-of-electronica TEED (aka Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs aka Orlando Higginbottom) has started a label, Nice Age, and already released its first track, the Anna Lunroe-featuring 'Feels Like'.

And when he says 'label', he means it in every sense: "record label, fashion label, party label and sticky label". And by "fashion", he means an extremely limited two-item clothing line consisting of this very erm, label-y t-shirt (£35) and this sweatshirt (£50) labelled with the Nice Age logo. Labels are cool, right?

Anyway having said that label thing, he then adds this extra thing: "There isn't a plan, this is just a way of putting out music, clothes and whatever I want under one name. Look out for the chess set".

Get familiar with 'Feels Like' here.

Involved Publishing partners with Kobalt
The publishing arm of the Anjunabeats and Anjunadeep labels, Involved Publishing, has announced a worldwide administration deal with Kobalt. The dance-focussed company boasts a roster of music by founders Above & Beyond, as well as Mat Zo, Dusky, Andrew Bayer, Arty and Audien, amongst others.

Involved CEO James Grant said in a statement: "The exciting thing about Kobalt is their global reach and the fact there are genuine fans of what we do in each of their major offices worldwide. There are unprecedented opportunities for dance music globally and our catalogue has never been more relevant, so it was the right time to bolster our publishing infrastructure and our offering to writers".

Yet more decline in music mag circulation figures
Somehow the Audit Bureau Of Circulation always seems to pick weeks when I'm really busy to pump out its regular magazine circulation figures, so much so I'm sometimes tempted to just dig out the report I wrote last time and re-run it, given the story is always the same: "the music mags all lost readers this last period".

So, for example, Q is down 12.7% period-on-period to 46,096, Uncut is down 11% to 50,022, Kerrang! is down 6% to 33,024 and Mojo 4.8% to 70,667. Those stats don't include the sale of 'digital versions' of the print mags, though even if those figures are included, sales are still down overall. (And these are the new stats by the way, I'm not just re-running February's report).

The big headline of this set of ABCs, though, is that NME, with a further 21.3% decline this period compared to the last, has now dropped below 15,000 sales a week, though adding in digital sales of the mag takes it up to 15,830. But that's still nothing compared to the music weekly's glory years.

That said, as publisher IPC is always keen to stress, if you take all of the NME channels into account, including NME.com, the brand is now reaching a much bigger audience than it ever did in the pre-web days. Though you do sense that more editorial effort is still put into the flagging paper version.

Said IPC's Jo Smalley: "NME's overall brand reach is now 3.6 million, bigger than it has ever been, and this puts the print ABC story into its proper context".

And commercially, Smalley added, ads in the print edition are just one part of a much bigger pie. She continued: "Amazing content partnerships with the likes of Amex and Nikon have been renewed for the third and fifth year in a row respectively, while major new partnerships with the likes of O2 have been secured during this period".

Reeperbahn conference expands speaker line-up
Hamburg's Reeperbahn music industry conference has added more speakers to the line-up for this year's event, which will take place from 17-20 Sep.

Amongst the new additions are The Orchard's Scott Cohen and Jodie Ferneyhough of CCS Rights Management. They will join DBTH's Virginie Berger, FAC's Crispin Hunt, MLOVE's Harald Neidhardt, Dave Allen from Beats Music, The Guardian's Helienne Lindvall and CMU's own Sam Taylor on the Vision 20/20 panel, looking at possible futures for the music industry.

See the full line-up of speakers here.

The Mansun Convention is a thing that is happening
The Mansun Convention - a convention celebrating the band Mansun and only the band Mansun - will take place at The Live Rooms in Chester on 23 Aug. No, it really will. It's not even the first time it's happened. How did we miss this?

There will be Mansun-based discussions, open mic sessions for fans to perform their favourite Mansun songs, screenings of previously unseen Mansun footage, an exhibition of Mansun memorabilia, a charity auction of Mansun-related stuff, and no less than three performances by tribute acts (well, two tribute acts and an act paying tribute).

It actually sounds kind of brilliant. Let's all go. Tickets and other info here.

Oh, and here's a little compilation of some Mansun studio outtakes, of which convention organiser Andy Lyth says: "This is an incredible discovery for Mansun fans - listening to this material is like hearing the Beatles 'Anthology' series, and will change the way fans enjoy [Mansun's debut album] 'Attack Of The Grey Lantern'. We're all looking forward to hearing Ronnie's stories about recording such a seminal album".

Listen!

Vigsy's Club Tip: Playground at Koko
Camden's Koko lets Playground take over this Saturday night with three rather diverse and suitably big names: Mo Wax label head honcho James Lavelle; Derrick May, one of the inventors of what we know as Detroit Techno; and also A Guy Called Gerald, protagonist and creator of what we know as drum n bass today, and who sure knows how to rock a party.

Not only that, but there is also Richard Fearless from Death In Vegas, and The Last Magpie will be throwing some beats and pieces into the mix. Not to be missed, I'd say.

Saturday 16 Aug, Koko, 1a Camden High Street, London, NW1 7JE, 10pm - 4am, £13.50, more info here.

Lil Wayne announces new album
Lil Wayne has announced that he will release his new album, 'Tha Carter V', in October. 28 Oct is the date he's going with, if you want specifics. Like the other titles in the series, its cover art will feature a baby photo of the rapper him very self, though this one also features his mother too.

He told ESPN: "It's perfect, because I always go with a baby picture and I wanted to go with one with my momma".

So now we all know.

Maximo Park's Paul Smith in league with Field Music man
Maximo Park slick Paul Smith has 'linked' with Field Music's Peter Brewis in order to make, and later release, a joint LP. 'Frozen By Sight' is its name, and "playful, restrained and richly descriptive" is (/are?) its game(s).

Anyhow it'll make it into shops all over the world on 17 Nov, via Memphis Industries, with the pair set to play several live dates with a nine-man band around the same time.

Talking, Smith says: "We allowed the words to guide where the music was going in order to break free of more traditional pop structures".

And Brewis chips in: "We wanted to touch on a point somewhere between composition, songwriting and improvisation, but we also wanted to keep a sense of humour and a sense of the everyday".

Try 'Frozen By Sight' song 'Barcelona (At Eye Level)' and a tracklisting for size, in that order, immediately!

Grouper announces Ruins LP
Off-piste pop artist Liz Harris, nickname Grouper, has strewn details of her new LP 'Ruins' all over the place this week. It'll follow last year's 'The Man Who Died In His Boat', and will be released via Kranky "in October".

"But what's with that title?" you might ask. "What inspired the record? And for another thing, did Liz Harris aka Grouper play an upright piano whilst making it? And what of all that 'emotional garbage'?"

"'Ruins' was made in Aljezur, Portugal in 2011 on a residency set up by Galeria Ze dos Bois", explains Harris, shedding light on her 'process'. "I recorded everything there except the last song, which I did at mother's house in 2004. Iʼm still surprised by what I wound up with. It was the first time Iʼd sat still for a few years; processed a lot of political anger and emotional garbage. Recorded pretty simply, with a portable four-track, Sony stereo mic and an upright piano. When I wasnʼt recording songs I was hiking several miles to the beach. The path wound through the ruins of several old estates and a small village".

"That's a nice story Liz, but what does it have to do with anything? Get to the point, Liz", the more impatient of you might remark.

Well, try this: "The album is a document. A nod to that daily walk. Failed structures. Living in the remains of love. I left the songs the way they came (microwave beep from when power went out after a storm); I hope that the album bears some resemblance to the place that I was in".

Clarity at last. And this is the 'Ruins' tracklisting:

Made Of Metal
Clearing
Call Across Rooms
Labyrinth
Lighthouse
Holofernes
Holding
Made Of Air

XOYO throwing London-wide parties wtih Danny Brown and The Magician
London 'nightspot' XOYO is throwing a load of parties this Autumn, banner-titled 'XOYO Loves', and featuring the likes of Ryan Hemsworth, Danny Brown, The Magician, Kutmah, Redlight and Groove Armada. There's a secret special act on the bill too, who may or may not be my dad (spoiler: it isn't my dad).

And whilst it apparently hates itself, what XOYO loves is hijacking rival 'nightspots', as confirmed by the fact that these shows are actually taking place at Brixton Electric, The Coronet Theatre and Studio Spaces.

So... yeah! That's basically it really. Safe.

Here's the link to get details and tickets, and here are the listings:

26 Sep: Studio Spaces (The Magician, Karma Kid, Blonde, TCTS)

27 Sep: Brixton Electric (RL Grime, Ryan Hemsworth, Mele, New York Transit Authority, Evil Needle)

CMU Beef Of The Week #219: The Black Lips v Gene Simmons
Gene Simmons was on the Huffington Post's website this week to do a live Q&A with fans. For younger readers who aren't aware of Gene Simmons, he is the bassist in a group called Kiss, who were basically the original black metal band in the 70s. He's also quite the misogynist.

This latter point was something the band The Black Lips decided to pull him up on. Introducing a video message from the trio, HuffPo host Ricky Camilleri whimpered an apology that this might be the one question that wasn't fawningly positive in the 30 minute interview, before rolling tape.

Done up in Kiss-style corpse-paint, and in the sparse surroundings of a rock club dressing room, Black Lipper Jack Hines shouted into the camera: "Mr Simmons! We're here to tell you that the day of misogynistic, sexist rock n roll is over. We call for the complete and utter surrender of the Kiss Army. Lay down your guitars. Do you accept our terms of surrender?"

"Yes, I surrender entirely", Simmons said calmly, possibly suggesting that it would be fairly easy to slap him in chains and take him down to rock prison before he was tried for musical war crimes. Though there was something in the tone of his voice which suggested otherwise. That suggested no truce was to be called.

"And I wanted to compliment your mom for the wonderful way that she designed the decoration on the basement she lets you live in", he continued sarcastically. "I think it's very attractive. I hope you get to leave your mom's basement soon. Remember, learn to speak English ... and a good education, that would help. I did it, you can too".

At this point, Camilleri pointed out that the people Simmons had just seen were in fact "very successful rock band" The Black Lips. This left Simmons incredulous, blurting: "They're not black. What are they, racists? Why are they calling themselves black?"

Actually, I'm not sure there's ever been a consensus reached on the origins of The Black Lips' name. I don't think it was chosen with any racist intent, but maybe it's a debate worth having. Not right now though, because Simmons was just using that as a diversion tactic. And look at me now, falling right into his trap

So, anyway, Simmons then rounded off the interview by making a casual prison rape gag. Oh, such japes. That whole 'learn to speak English' thing, by the way, was a reference to a point that Simmons returned to throughout the interview about how immigrants, such as himself (having come to the US from Israel when he was eight), can better get ahead in America.

Earlier in the chat, in response to a question about how it felt to see multiple generations of families being fans of Kiss, he said: "I'm actually saying the thing that needs to be said because the politically-correct climate is bullshit. You don't want to upset anybody by saying, 'Learn to speak goddamn English'. So, as an immigrant, I'm telling you: learn to speak goddamn English. It is the key that will unlock the keys to the kingdom".

Which some people, you know, might say left him in a weak position to then start calling other people out as racists. He later summarised his point by suggesting that the benchmark of integrating with US society was to be able to be understood by Apple's voice-recognition software Siri.

Oh well, while we're talking about being misunderstood and black metal bands - which, remember kids, Kiss definitely are - here's a quick lesson in how sometimes the English language can be confusing.
