Online music video ratings to be tested in October That PM bloke you all love so much, David Cameron, yesterday confirmed that the BPI and the British Board Of Film Classification will begin their pilot scheme applying age ratings to online music videos on 1 Oct. As previously reported, it was announced that the record industry trade group and film classifications board had been asked to design a system for rating online videos in January this year. It was also confirmed at the same time that the threshold at which physically released music videos are classified was to be lowered. New rules requiring DVD and Blu-ray releases to be submitted for classification, where previously most music releases would be exempt, will also come into force on 1 Oct. In a speech yesterday detailing how the government is going to save families from certain doom, the Prime Minister said: "Helping families with children and parenting shouldn't stop at childbirth. To take just one example - bringing up children in an internet age, you are endlessly worried about what they are going to find online. So we've taken a big stand on protecting our children online. We're making family friendly filters the default setting for all new online customers, and we're forcing existing customers to make an active choice about whether to install them". Moving onto the music video menace, he continued: "Today we're going even further. From October, we're going to help parents protect their children from some of the graphic content in online music videos by working with the British Board of Film Classification, Vevo and YouTube to pilot the age rating of these videos". Responding to the announcement, the BPI said in a statement: "The BPI agrees with government that, with so many more music videos now being released online through such sites as YouTube and Vevo, it is important this content is made available to the public in a responsible way, that is sensitive to the needs and concerns of younger viewers and their parents". The organisation's statement continued: "The BPI and its members are therefore working with the British Board of Film Classification, digital service providers and with the support of government on a pilot scheme that will trial age ratings for music videos released online through the UK. Technical details are still being developed, but the scheme will see UK record labels voluntarily submit content likely to be rated 12 or above to the BBFC for classification into 12, 15 or 18 age categories. Labels will then include this data with a 'parental advisory' style alert in its feed to the digital service providers so that users, including parents, can make a more informed viewing decision". It added that the pilot is "expected to run for at least three months, followed by a period of evaluation to assess the voluntary scheme". If successful, the next stage is to convince ISPs to implement more filters to allow customers to block videos with specific age ratings. So that's all very reassuring, given how successful the government-supported adult content filters have been at blocking anything but what they're supposed to. |

Snow Patrol managing own songs utilising Kobalt alliance Snow Patrol's publishing company Polar Patrol is now controlling the rights in the band's own post-2010 songs and future works in the North American market, with the catalogue being administered via a global alliance with Kobalt. Confirming this, Sas Metcalfe, Kobalt's President Of Global Creative, said: "We've worked closely with Snow Patrol as they have developed and grown their Polar Patrol publishing company over the last few years. It's great to see them now adding their own songs to its roster for North America and with a new album coming in 2015, they look set to build on what has so far been the company's most successful year to date". He went on: "As a band, their songwriting talent is unquestionable and that is now being matched by their ability to discover and nurture other writers. We're really proud to support them as both a band and publisher". |

Morrissey convinced he is no longer signed to a label So poor old Morrissey is on his own again (recordings wise, at least), his fansite True To You now insisting that he has, as many might've already believed, been fired by his one-time label, Universal's Capitol/Harvest. The clarification came following a Billboard story stating that Moz was definitely still signed to Harvest, in spite of a previous post on True To You which stated that the label had "ended their relationship" with the one-time Smith "as directed by label boss Steve Barnett". Reacting to the Billboard article, a new post on True To You reinforced the info that Moz is now sans a label deal, with the site writing that Morrissey and his lawyers have emails from Barnett confirming that his Moz's time at the label is over. The site also says that there was never a deal to break anyway. It explains: "No recording agreement with Capitol/Harvest was ever signed by Morrissey, and Morrissey retains full ownership of [Moz's latest LP] 'World Peace is None Of Your Business'. Contrary to the assured Billboard report, Capitol-Harvest have very clearly stated that they would have no interest in licensing a second album by Morrissey. Russells (London), who represent Morrissey, are presently concluding Morrissey's relationship with Harvest Records. Once again, Morrissey is in search of a new label". And most importantly of all, Morrissey himself later added a postscript of his own on the True To You site, informing fans: "I am so glad that you understand. I am so sorry that Harvest Records did not understand what they had. You have explained it to them, and I will always be in your debt". Universal did not respond to a request for a statement. |

| | Approved: Dirty Beaches One of the highlights of the Visions festival in London earlier this month, Dirty Beaches, aka Alex Zhang Hungtai, yesterday premiered the first track from his third album, 'Stateless'. Last year's 'Drifter/Love Is The Devil' was split into two parts. The first dropped further into the dystopian 50s nightmare found on 2011's 'Badlands', all oppressively repetitive drum machine patterns and echoes of the safety of rock n roll. The second switched to a different sound, with more open but still sprawling, drum-less instrumentals. 'Stateless', which is due for release though Zoo Music on 3 Nov, sticks with the instrumental theme. However, lead track 'Displaced' does bring back some of the feel of his earlier work with claustrophobic stabs of saxophone and violin vibrating throughout its seven and a half minutes. And at the end of its time, the track does leave you feeling a bit as the title suggests. Listen to 'Displaced' here. | CLICK HERE to read and share online | | |

Labrinth premieres new single live in Camden! R&B man Lab-no-'y'-rinth has a single coming out soon (on 28 Sep), titled 'Let It Be'. And no, it's not a Beatles cover. Labrinth wrote it with his own imagination, giving it a first airing for fans' ears only at an 'intimate' show at Stables Market in Camden, London. His hat came off while he was singing the song, still it was all okay ultimately, and a massive cast of musicians/dancers/choir singers came out in stages and joined in. It really was quite impressive, so see it all happening beneath this concise and self-hyping speech by the man himself, Labrinth. "I knew I had been gone a long time and needed to come back with a single that was special, something forward-thinking. I wanted an opening statement to my second album and I put extra pressure on myself to come up with that". Now hold onto your hats because this is the Camden clip. -------------------------------------------------- Lights off on Darkside 'for now', says Nicolas Jaar Looks like it's lights out for Darkside, Nico Jaar's proggy collaboration with guitarist Dave Harrington, "for now" at least. Bearing in mind that both Jaar and Harrington have other jobs on the go, it isn't clear if Darkside - via which the pair released only the one LP in last year's most excellent 'Psychic' - was ever meant to last. Still, one thing's for certain, and that's that the project is "coming to an end, for now", as confirmed via the official Darkside Twitter in a tweet. Jaar and Harrington will play one final show as Darkside on 12 Sep in Brooklyn, NYC. Non-America-based fans can take a last slice of the Darkside pie via 'What They Say' and 'Gone Too Soon', a pair of tracks going spare from the 'Psychic' era. They'll have a release on 29 Sep via 'WORK', the new compilation from Jaar's label, Other People. Hear them anyway right away via this neat little player. |

Taylor Swift shakes off new single, LP details Hey everyone, a new Taylor Swift LP exists! Its title is '1989', a la the year of Ms Swift's birth, and it'll officially be available on 27 Oct. Speaking re the record, which like every artist ever tends to say their new record is, is, says Swift, apparently her greatest achievement to date, she explains: "I spent two years making '1989'. Two years gives you enough time to grow and change and let things inspire you. I was listening to a lot of late 80s pop music and how bold those songs were and how that time period was a time of limitless possibilities. In thinking about that, this album is a rebirth for me. This is my very first documented, official pop album. '1989' is the most sonically cohesive album I have ever made and my favourite album I have ever made". Efficient as always, Swifty has already premiered lead '1989' single 'Shake It Off'. Watch her flailing all over the place in a manner akin to dancing in its now-airing video, now. -------------------------------------------------- Charli XCX has no fucks to give, shares radical new track Pop champ Charli XCX has gone all 'bad girl' on 'Break The Rules', the new track she premiered yesterday. It pivots on the line "I don't wanna go to skool / I just wanna break the rules", which, considering Charli is too old to have to go to school, well... it's just anarchy of the highest and most irrelevant order basically, isn't it? Reiterating, Charli says: "The song is inspired by a lot of the things I was listening to whilst in Sweden at the end of last year. I spent about a month making a punk record and covering songs by Swedish punk bands like Snuffed By The Yakuza and stuff. This song was written when I came out of the other side of that punk phase and translated it into something more pop. Obviously, it's about not giving a fuck". Anyway as per pretty well everything XCX is involved in, 'Break The Rules' is really quite great, in a maddeningly catchy way, and will feature on her new LP 'Sucker', which is released on 20 Oct. You can give it a listen exclusively over on Buzzfeed, since Buzzfeed is doing that kind of thing now. -------------------------------------------------- Aphex Twin confirms first LP since 2001, Syro BLIMP INCOMING. BLIMP INCOMING. Well then, Aphex Blimp... I mean, Aphex Twin, has shed a tiny chink of light on what was going on with the mystery logo-bearing blimps seen flying over London at the weekend. And basically, as I think we all had a feeling was the case, the blimps (and this strange 'marking' on a plate of hot sauce) were conveying the fact that Aphex Twin, aka Richard D James, is going to release an LP soon, whose title is now known to be 'Syro'. The 'news' was relayed through a website accessible only via deep web browser Tor, with the AT Twitter carrying a link only accessible to those that have it. For those that don't, this is an accessible link, though on there the title and tracklist are removed, which isn't really much use. Pitchfork has a screengrab of all the details though, here. Or, if you just want to stick around here, and barring the distinctly possible possibility that all this is one big joke, this is the apparent tracklist in a more readable and compact format: minipops 67 (source field mix) XMAS_EVET10 (thanaton3 mix) produk 29 4 bit 9d api+e+6 180db_ CIRCLONT6A (syrobonkus mix) fz pseudotimestretch+e+3 CIRCLONT14 (shrymoming mix) syro u473t8+e (piezoluminescence mix) PAPAT4 (pineal mix) s950tx16wasr10 (earth portal mix) aisatsana -------------------------------------------------- Peaking Lights explain new disc Cosmic Logic Man-and-wife psych-pop types Peaking Lights, aka Aaron Coyes and Indra Dunis, are releasing a set of eleven "lean and lithe" tracks titled, as a body, 'Cosmic Logic'. "Designed" and refined by Coyes and Dunis themselves over eighteen months at their LA studio, it is set to be released via Domino's Weird World on 6 Oct. Pondering Peaking Lights' "whole thing", Coyes says: "It's always been based on an idea of 'fucked modern pop' but exactly what that is, we don't know... we're still trying to figure that out". Well here at least is one thing that makes sense (kind of), the 'Cosmic Logic' tracklisting: Infinite Trips Telephone Call Hypnotic Hustle Everyone and Us Little Light Dreamquest Eyes To Sea Bad With The Good New Grrrls Breakdown Tell Me Your Song And finally, experience the LP's wavy lead single 'Breakdown' first via its own tailor-made site, which moves as the track does. |

Caribou is going to play Brixton Academy next March Caribou has added a new track to his endlessly boring back catalogue - the title track from his new album, 'Our Love'. And by the sounds of it, this album isn't going to help me work out why you all like him so much. Anyway, given that you almost certainly love everything he's ever done and now think that I should be beaten into the ground with sticks for CORRECTLY stating that almost everything he's ever done is really, really, really, dull, you might like to know that he's announced a new London gig. No, not the one at Koko on 8 Oct, that's sold out. This one's going to be at Brixton Academy on 15 Mar next year. Tickets are going on sale tomorrow at 9am. You'd probably better move quickly, because it's likely that a whole load of other idiots like you are going to try to buy tickets too. -------------------------------------------------- Bombay Bicycle Club announce UK tour The Bombay Bicycle Club club are going to go on a tour in December, because apparently just playing Earls Court on 13 Dec isn't enough for them. The seven regional dates will help the band warm up for that show - ie they will all precede it. The dates are all listed below - bad luck Leicester having to be at the beginning of the warm up tour. That date will probably be rubbish. They should get into the swing of it around the middle of the tour though. I'd probably avoid seeing them until about Wolverhampton. 3 Dec: Leicester, De Montfort Hall 4 Dec: Plymouth, Pavilions 5 Dec: Bournemouth, BIC Solent Hall 7 Dec: Manchester, Apollo 10 Dec: Wolverhampton, Civic Hall 11 Dec: Edinburgh, Usher Hall 12 Dec: Newcastle, Academy 13 Dec: London, Earls Court Arena |

Internet superstar Meghan Trainor is going to release her viral summer web hit this autumn "Internet sensation" Meghan Trainor has announced that she'll release her "viral hit single" 'All About That Bass' in the UK on 5 Oct. So that's good news for people who like songs with positive messages. Even if said songs aren't actually very good. The song has already gone top five in the US, as well as number one in Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and hit high in the charts in Sweden, Norway, Finland, Switzerland, Poland, South Africa and across Asia. I assume the UK has to wait another month and a half for it so that Trainor isn't overwhelmed by her success, or something. Anyway, here's the video. Be careful not to get bored of it before October. |
