Fran writes: I read your Keyboard Tips & Tricks for iPads or iPhones. I don't know how you can get to the other 2 layers. Where do we go to pull up the keypad to enter the shortcuts in? I tried in notes and an email and it will not work there. It just shows what you type and there is no where to click to make it pull up the 2nd and 3rd layer. To pull up the keyboard, you start typing in field that requires typing and it should pop up automatically. To get to the second layer of the keyboard, just tap the .?123 key on either the right or left side of the keyboard. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version
Enough Storage For Everyone! It's a brand new flash drive for just $1.97!! What else do I need to say?! Look: big flash drives are great... if you need them! But unless you're moving data back and forth for a tech job, or storing a big computer backup... chances are, you probably only need a few gigs of space!
Photos only take up a few megabytes, and documents only a FRACTION of a megabyte! The point is, you wouldn't waste your time driving out to a football field just to play catch with your kid! So why are you spending $30 for a flash drive if you only need 1/16th of its space? Back in the day, computer hard drives weren't even this big! So for $1.97 you can STILL store all your documents, photos, and even some songs... without having a bunch of wasted space and wasted cash!
Did I mention how cheap these are? Just $1.97! That's less than a dollar per gigabyte for a fancy new flash drive you're gonna love! Of course, if you don't grab one or two quick, you'll miss out entirely. These practically disappear from our shelves they go so quick! http://store.worldstart.com/product/9911 PS - The sale ends Thursday and these go up to $6.97!
Ubuntu & What Else? Part 2 In part 1 of this article, I looked at three popular Linux- based distributions that could make a great replacement for your Windows-based operating system. In part 2, I'll look at the very popular Linux Mint and the sometimes astonishing Zorin. 4. Linux Mint One of my favorites, Linux Mint has come to version 16, codename Petra. Despite its richness in features and visual effects, it runs smoothly and gives the user a tremendous experience. The latest LTS (Long Term Release) version is 13, codename Maya. It can be downloaded for both 32 and 64 bit architecture, I'd suggest opting for Cinnamon, KDE, MATE or XFCE as your desktop environment. While XFCE is the most lightweight environment, MATE has the most serious "face".
Requirements: 700 MHz processor, 384 MB of RAM for XFCE desktop environment, 512 for Cinnamon and MATE, 1GB for KDE, 800×600 resolution monitor for all of them except KDE, which requires a resolution of 1024×768. 5. Zorin OS It's quite an astonishing distribution, which aims to help the Linux beginners to make the transition from Windows easier. It even has an exclusive software, called Look Changer, which tries to give the users the touch of different Windows versions, like XP or 7. Another interesting thing is the ring windows switcher and the desktop cube, which allows you to actually arrange the opened windows in a cube.
The developer claims that ZorinOS moves much faster than Windows 7, providing at the same time a deeper functionality. Also, you may choose between two versions: the desktop version, the most resource hungry, and the lite version, a lightweight LXDE based one, suitable for older computers and laptops. I believe it would be worth a try. Requirements: for desktop version 1GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, a graphic card capable of 640×480 resolution; for the LXDE version 266 MHz processor, 128 MB of RAM, the same specs for the graphic card. ~Adrian Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? How To Find Out If Your Apps Are Spying On You As technology becomes even more pervasive integrating into every aspect of our lives, many people are starting to take a serious look at security. Let's see at how Google defines the word: se·cu·ri·ty 2.a private police force that guards a building, campus, park, etc.
Since most people can't afford to hire a private police force to protect their data, this article will focus on the best option available today that will tell you what the apps on your phone are up to. It comes from the man that basically invented computer security in the 90's with his McAfee brand of anti-virus products. Now he is taking on the mobile world with his new app that identifies what the individual apps you have installed on your android phone are doing. I'm sure you may have wondered if any app is trying to listen in on your discussion or watch you through your camera well now you can know for sure who's trying to do what. The app is available on the Google Play store for download and it's FREE. Head on over to WorldStart to learn more!
Returning Electronics The Right Way It's a sad fact of life that some items we purchase or receive as gifts, just aren't going to work. Or perhaps they won't meet our needs for other reasons. That means it's time to return them to the store or mail them back to the online retailer where you purchased it. With expensive electronics, it can be especially tricky. Most places are far more picky about $300 items than they are about accepting $10 returns. So here are some tips for getting a refund or a replacement with as little pain as possible for both you and the retailer. Make Sure The Item Is Actually Defective Some defects like a cracked screen are pretty obvious, but other issues may be something that can be called simply by calling tech support or visiting the manufacturer's website and clicking on support. Know The Return Policy First of all, know what the return policy is. Most retailers have a period of time in which you can return a product if it is defective or you are not satisfied. But check before you buy, not everyone does. Many private sellers will sell items "as is" meaning you get what you get. Some places will allow you to return an item if you aren't happy with it, others only if that item is defective. Some offer refunds, others only the option of replacement or store credit. Trying to get a refund out of place that only offers replacement merchandise can end up be frustrating for both the customer and the retailer. Don't just throw out a slip of paper or delete an e-mail with the return and refund policy. You may need it later.
Also, know that return policy is a different thing from a... Head on over to WorldStart for the rest of this helpful tip!
Internet Explorer Update Blocks Old Versions Of Java A recent update to Internet Explorer is taking a major step towards making the browser more secure. There's a new security measure called out-of-date ActiveX control blocking. ActiveX controls are applets that let a website show you content like videos and games. What this will mainly effect is Java Java is used to run many games and it is the gateway through which the majority of attacks come in Internet Explorer.
Hackers set up web pages with bugs that keep an eye out for old versions of Java and attack if they happen to detect it. Microsoft says Java exploits accounted for up to 98% of exploit kit detections in 2013. Many of these attacks can be blocked if people keep current with the latest Java updates, but users are often not-so-good about that. Out-of-date ActiveX control blocking won't stop you from using part of the web page that are up-to-date, but it will stop you from loading outdated controls. You should be given the option to update to newer, safer version of the outdated control. This update applies to Windows 7 SP1 for versions 8 through 11 of Internet explorer and for Windows 8 and 8.1 Of course, there's no update for Windows XP since support stopped back in April. If Java is blocked, you should see a notification like this... Just click WorldStart to read more! For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
Haiku Deck Haiku Deck is a new, innovative way to give presentations. I'm really looking forward to using it this semester for any presentation I need to give, but also think it would be great for any situation where you need to present material to an audience. It's available for free on the web and for Ipad. If you need another platform, make sure you click the For Another Platform link to be notified when they've got the platform you're looking for! This also lets them gather information on how many people want their product for a certain platform I imagine. You can scroll down the main page to learn all about Haiku Deck. You can look at featured examples, watch a video, and even check out reviews. Once you're ready to give it a try click the link for your platform, so For Web or For iPad. I'm using the web version. To sign up you'll either provide an email address and create a password or you can sign up with Facebook or Twitter. I used the F-connect option with Facebook. Once you're logged in, there are lots of helpful directions on the screen to get you started, and a big More Help button in the top left of the page. I started by selecting a Theme and designing the presentation from there. You can select different kinds of slides: title, list, chart, etc. You can customize the text and background. Definitely check out the Gallery to see finished presentations to get a look at all you can do! When you're all finished you can export it as a .PDF or .PPT file or you can share it via the web. This is an awesome way to make presentations and it's easy to use! You Know That Outlet... Every home has one... it's the only remaining outlet, and you NEED to plug something in. But it's right behind the only place your couch fit (who DESIGNED these places?!) So now what? You either pull out that couch a bit EVERY. TIME... or you pretend it doesn't exist and use an extension cord or a less convenient plug! STOP MOVING YOUR FURNITURE! Wish there were a better way? THERE IS! Just pop one of these guys on that outlet and now you've got 6 easy-to-use plugs! So what makes THIS one so great? Think about it... outlets are all along the wall. Whenever you plug something in, the cord sticks STRAIGHT back into the room... now that's a tripping hazard. But even worse... if you have ANYTHING in front of the outlet... you can't even USE it! Plugs are a bulky, and it's SO ANNOYING to lose outlets just because you have furniture in front of them!
They're your outlets... use 'em! And on top of that genius idea... it turns your standard two-outlets into a WHOPPING SIX!
You will NEVER find another outlet multiplier that's so low-profile! Every other one I've seen has been a BIG BULKY MESS! And it'll feel so good knowing you finally have control over ALL the outlets in your home!
The Bottom Line These are low-profile and low-cost while being highly convenient and highly efficient. You just won't find a better outlet multiplier anywhere! And just how low-cost are they?
