Quick Tip

John from Chesapeake, VA writes:

Every time I open Internet Explorer it opens to www.start.iplay.com as the home page along with my chosen page, msn.com. I've tried everything to remove this as a home page but it always comes back. Has this page implanted itself in my registry? How do I get rid of it for good as a home page?

John, iPlay is one of the toolbars that can sometimes attach itself to other downloads. It could happen if you installed an iPlay game or might have piggybacked on legitimate update. You can remove it, but it is quite a process.

Click here for an article that explains how to remove a similar toolbar and search page called Eazel Search. The method is the same, but you'll be looking for iPlay instead of Eazel. This process will work for removing any unwanted search page.

You can also check out this article that explains how those hijackers get on your computer and how to avoid them.

Computers 101

Benjamin from Coshocton asks:

I have a Toshiba Satellite L655-S5074 laptop. It as an eSATA port. What can I do with this, and what do I need to do to use its port? Do I need a cable?

Hi Benjamin. An eSATA port is a port designed for use with an external SATA drive. In the case of your laptop model, this port can be used for a SATA device or as a USB port. The eSATA port is advantageous for use with an external drive because it allows for faster transfer speeds than a USB 2.0 port, and can be comparable, or better in some aspects, to the newer USB 3.0 speeds. These faster speeds are because the data does not have to be translated between the interface and the computer, but uses the same technologies as your internal hard drive.

This eSATA port requires an additional power source, so if you do want to use it with an external drive, you need to look for one compatible with an eSATA port but not one that says eSATAp port. The p at the end of that stands for powered, and it provides its own power source. So you would need a drive or a hard drive enclosure that allows for an alternate power source, such as a wall plug or a USB port.

There are eSATA cables available, but if you are buying a hard drive to use with this, the cable could already be included. Also, keep in mind, that eSATA port can still be used as a standard USB 2.0 port, so you always have that option.

On The Move

Bonnie writes:

A couple of years ago, I purchased an Android tablet. Not long after I got it, the Kindle app darkened and I couldn't get it to lighten up. Your tech support told me what to do to correct it. I thought I'd written down what to do, but now I can't find it. All the other apps are fine and the settings are set to the highest brightness level. Can you please tell me what I need to do with it? I don't think I had to uninstall and reinstall the app before, but if I have to do that, I will.

Bonnie, there's no need for that. For those not familiar with the Kindle app, the free app can turn your Android tablet, Windows tablet or iPad into a an eReader with full access to your Amazon collection. It also works on your smartphone. Books will sync across devices, enabling you to pick up reading right where you left off.

Your issue show one of the tricky things about the Kindle app. You don't find the brightness controls under "Settings" where you'd normally expect to find such controls in an app.

Instead, open up a book and tap the middle of the screen at the very top or bottom to bring up controls for the book.

Tap the top right of the screen where you see...

From The Archives

Gary from California writes:

I use a MacBook Pro, and am trying to find out how to reverse a display change in Safari that just showed up one day, without any action on my part that I can recall. I now have a column that I don't want, apparently named 'Reading List', It takes about 20% of my screen, which makes it impossible to read most copy margin-to-margin at the text size that I find comfortable. There are instructions for adding to this list, but I have yet to find instructions about how to remove it or hide it. Any suggestions? Thanks.

Safari's Reading List makes it easy to save pages and articles that you'd like to read later. It's a little like a bookmark and a little bit like a reader such as Pulse. If you'd prefer not to have that column displayed, it's easy enough to get rid of.

First open Safari, then choose Preferences from the drop-down menu...

Today's Feature

Make Your Searches Simpler With Natural Language

Here's an easy way to make searches a bit simpler in Windows 7. You've probably heard of so-called "personal assistants" like Siri or Cortana that use natural language search to help you find things on your device. Well, Windows 7 has a similar feature already built it. Here's how access it: Go to the Start Button and select Control Panel.

Then Choose Appearance and Personalization.

Then choose Folder Options...

Five Sentences

Between being a grad student and working two jobs, I spend a lot of time answering emails. I'd say at least half of my time in graduate assistantship is spent responding to emails that come into the journal. It would be great if I could cut that time back so that I could spend more time organizing the information that comes in.

When I stumbled across Five Sentences I thought that there was no way it would work for me. The theory is to treat all emails as if they were SMS messages, but because characters are too hard to track (and would be time consuming to count) they suggest that you limit your responses to five sentences instead.

After putting this into practice, I've cut down on my email time quite a bit.

When you arrive at the site, there's not much to do it just explains the premise behind it and offers you an optional bit of text that you can copy and paste into your e-mail signature, so that people will know why your e-mail was five sentences, and I think to encourage them to respond in kind. They even offer a two, three, and four sentence option as well.

This site also made me rethink the way I reply to certain types of emails, and I decided to create some letter templates (all under five sentences) that I can just copy and past into an email. It's really helped a lot.

I hope you'll check it out and give it a try yourself!

One More Big Deal

You use surge protectors, right?

I certainly hope so.

Whether it's your computer, your TV, your stereo system, or outlet you charge your mobile devices on... you NEED a surge protector.

Expensive electronics turn to gigantic paperweights. Your computer goes from having all your photos, videos, and documents to having NOTHING... it's not pretty.

That's one MONSTER surge protector!

Most of the time, it's recommended to have a surge protector that's at LEAST rated for 200-400 joules.

When you get to the 600-joules rated ones, you're considered "well protected"

THIS ONE IS RATED FOR 1080 JOULES!

I think the numbers speak for themselves on this one!

So, I could go on all day about the benefits of surge protection... but I'm pretty sure you get it! Your stuff is expensive, this isn't, and it protects your expensive stuff. It's a no-brainer!

But Here's Something REALLY Cool!

Two of these outlets are "smart" outlets.

You know how you hear about "vampire" energy drain? If you leave a charger in the outlet for anything (laptops, phones, MP3 players, etc) the charger will KEEP drawing power even after the device is fully powered!

That's a waste of electricity. And that means it's a waste of money.

Yep. The two smart outlets are capable of sensing that they don't NEED to be drawing power anymore and will turn off until they do.

That makes this a PERFECT surge protector to keep nearby your computer area.

Plug your normal devices in the "always on" outlets, and your chargers or other devics that you don't use all the time in the other ones.

It's BRILLIANT!

No surges, no wasted energy, more money in your pocket.

YOUR PRICE IS ONLY $9.97!

If you think this is going to sell out fast, you're right! So get to the store quick!

PS - $19.97 is what these go up to Tuesday!!

Angel Wings

Split Rock Moonrise

This photograph almost didn't happen! The day this was created was the day after the full moon, with moonrise coinciding with sunset pretty closely.
