Enough Storage For Everyone!

It's a brand new flash drive for just $1.97!!

What else do I need to say?!

Look: big flash drives are great... if you need them!

But unless you're moving data back and forth for a tech job, or storing a big computer backup... chances are, you probably only need a few gigs of space!

Photos only take up a few megabytes, and documents only a FRACTION of a megabyte!

The point is, you wouldn't waste your time driving out to a football field just to play catch with your kid!

So why are you spending $30 for a flash drive if you only need 1/16th of its space?

Back in the day, computer hard drives weren't even this big!

So for $1.97 you can STILL store all your documents, photos, and even some songs... without having a bunch of wasted space and wasted cash!

Did I mention how cheap these are? Just $1.97!

That's less than a dollar per gigabyte for a fancy new flash drive you're gonna love!

Of course, if you don't grab one or two quick, you'll miss out entirely. These practically disappear from our shelves they go so quick!

PS - The sale ends Wednesday and these go up to $6.97!

Ubuntu & What Else? Part 1

I told you a lot about Ubuntu and its derivatives lately, but obviously it is not the only Linux-based OS out there. While Ubuntu and Ubuntu-based distributions are still preferred by most users, there are many others, especially designed to cover a wide variety of needs.

1. Fedora

The default Fedora distribution is not a colorful, impressive one, like Kubuntu, aiming to be a stronger, more stable and secure OS instead.

Its latest release is Fedora 20, which comes with a full suite of applications and tools to get us started, like Mozilla, LibreOffice, Rhythmbox for music and Shotwell for screen captures and photo editing. The dock on the left side looks quite familiar, being similar to Ubuntu's 3D Unity applications launcher. The search box offers a quick access to your programs.

Requirements: minimum 400 MHz processor, at least 512 MB of RAM (1GB recommended) and a 3D acceleration capable video card.

2. Debian

Debian 7.4 is the latest release of this operating system. With over 37500 packages nicely arranged to fit your computer, Debian is the main competitor for Fedora regarding the stability and security.

It's not much to say about Gnome-based user interface. It's simple and functional, without effects and "sparkles".

Of course, you can customize it, like any Linux distribution, but don't expect the eye-candy colors of KDE environments (see Kubuntu).

Requirements: a 1 GHz processor is recommended, with 512 MB of RAM

3. Slax

Slax is a "pocket operating system". I personally tried it and I still have it on a bootable USB thumb drive. I just love this minimal OS, which takes only 220 MB to download. You may use it wherever you want, just plug in the memory stick, set the computer to boot from it and there you are! A fast, pretty operating system at a glance.

The desktop environment is KDE, very user-friendly and colorful. Every setting you do, every document you save will be preserved on your memory stick and you can take it with you. The distribution brings with it Mozilla, Internet Messenger, a file manager, games and applications for document reading/writing your documents.

Requirements: barely an i486 processor and 256 MB of RAM

In part 2 of this article I'll look at more Linux-based systems, including the very popular Mint and a flavor that promises to run faster than Windows 7

On The Move

Roma from Colorado writes:

I have an 10″ Android tablet and I recently put antivirus software on it (AVG Free) I'm getting a security alert for Settings, the message is:
Unsecure privilege mode detected. Your device is running in High Privilege mode (i e it has been rooted) We recommend using only genuine firmware. Is this something i should be concerned about? and if so how do I fix it?

Hello Roma!

Great question, and apparently a fairly common issue. The good news is, in most cases, it's nothing to worry about.

To root a tablet or phone generally will make any sort of warranty void. Rooting is not an easy thing to do and typically cannot be done on accident. Nor is it something recommended to do by Worldstart, as it can cause lots of problems on the device if not done or used properly.

If you have never rooted the tablet and have been careful about apps you have installed, this is likely nothing to worry about. You can simply just mark the check box to ignore the warning in the future as it is really nothing to be too concerned about. Or you can also try a different antivirus program, as it seems to be AVG comes up with false positives more than others.

The final option would be to try a...

Is An eReader Right For You?

It wasn't so long ago that e-readers like Amazon's Kindle and Barnes & Noble's original Nook were all the rage. Then tablets came along, starting with the first iPad in 2010, and most people forgot about e-readers as they embraced the new products. But is it possible that an e-reader might be a better choice for you than a tablet?

Consider the following advantages they offer...

Create A Golden Sunrise: Part 2

In part one of this tutorial, we had an introduction to Adjustment Layers and prepared our photo for our golden sunrise by applying a solid orange color to the photo.

In this tutorial we will be applying two lighting effects to finalize our image and give it a real-life looking sunrise.

  • Lighting Effect 1 – Creating the sunrise
  • Lighting Effect 2 – Creating the reflections (of the sun) on the side of the buildings

Applying the Sunrise Effect – Exposure

We're now going to lighten up the base of the skyline or the horizon to create a bright gleam of light to make it seem as though the sun has just begun to rise. To do this, we're going to create another Adjustment Layer and then, using the Gradient Tool, we're going to remove the effect from the top of the sky whilst leaving the effect on the horizon with a blending effect.

First, let's click on "New Adjustment Layer":

Select "Exposure":

And set the Exposure to about +1.80, as shown below.

Your image should be nice and bright, as shown below.

You'll notice another layer has been created...

Online PDF Converter

I found myself in a bind earlier this week. I needed to change the second page of a .PDF print quote so that it had a signature. The signature was a different file. Normally, I'd print them out and then scan the two pages I needed and create a new PDF, but to facilitate that I'd need to drive up to my office in Ypsilanti which wasn't really an option. So I started hunting around online to find a site that would let me merge and edit the documents. After finding a few terrible options, I discovered Online PDF Converter. It was exactly what I needed and easy to use, so I thought I'd share it with you!

When you arrive at the site, you'll find that everything you need to know is right there on the page. They lay out the directions, the different uses of the site, and the different types of files you can use to achieve your goal. They also provide a link to the documentation of all the features offered.

To use the converter is really easy! To begin click the Browse button and select the file or files you want to work with. Then choose what you want to do to the file. It is set to file conversion by default, but you can select Compression, View, Image to PDF, Protection, and Header to Footer options.

Also if you notice at the right of the page there are three more options: a padlock, for password options; rotating files, for file rotations; and scissors, for editing the pages. I was here for the last option. I need to merge two files and edit the page order.

Once you've made your selections, just click the red Convert button. It will upload the file or files, make the changes you want, and then automatically download your new file. If it doesn't automatically download the file, you can click the Manual Download link to download the file.

This site makes it easy to convert and edit documents for free. Go check it out today!

One More Big Deal

You Know That Outlet...

Every home has one... it's the only remaining outlet, and you NEED to plug something in. But it's right behind the only place your couch fit (who DESIGNED these places?!) So now what?

You either pull out that couch a bit EVERY. TIME... or you pretend it doesn't exist and use an extension cord or a less convenient plug!

STOP MOVING YOUR FURNITURE!

Wish there were a better way? THERE IS!

Just pop one of these guys on that outlet and now you've got 6 easy-to-use plugs!

So what makes THIS one so great?

Think about it... outlets are all along the wall. Whenever you plug something in, the cord sticks STRAIGHT back into the room... now that's a tripping hazard. But even worse... if you have ANYTHING in front of the outlet... you can't even USE it!

Plugs are a bulky, and it's SO ANNOYING to lose outlets just because you have furniture in front of them!

They're your outlets... use 'em!

And on top of that genius idea... it turns your standard two-outlets into a WHOPPING SIX!

You will NEVER find another outlet multiplier that's so low-profile! Every other one I've seen has been a BIG BULKY MESS!

And it'll feel so good knowing you finally have control over ALL the outlets in your home!

The Bottom Line

These are low-profile and low-cost while being highly convenient and highly efficient. You just won't find a better outlet multiplier anywhere!

And just how low-cost are they? You can get YOURS for just $6.97!!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/8402

We weren't able to get our hands on many of these... so make sure to grab yours before they're all gone! And the few that remain by Wednesday will go back to $16.97!!

Cub In A Tree

I found this little guy as I was driving through Cade's Cove in the Smoky Mountains early one morning. I saw him at a distance and decided to walk up a little and investigate. I grabbed the gear (my longest lens setup), and slowly made my way towards his position. Mom was…(More)

Angel Wings

This was just one of several keepers from a furious 45 minute session just before sunset. The light was absolutely perfect, and after observing where all the birds seemed to be congregating, I positioned myself so I could get some backlit wings as they came in. Now, I'd love to say that...(More)

Split Rock Moonrise

This photograph almost didn't happen! The day this was created was the day after the full moon, with moonrise coinciding with sunset pretty closely. I knew from checking my compass that the moon would be in a good location, but you can imagine my disappointment when I saw that huge bank of clouds along the horizon. We were literally packing it in and calling it a night when...(More)
