Quick Tip

K. Vee asks:

In your article about creating documents in Microsoft Office Mobile it looks like, the Desktop Word has expanded the doc. Now, the question is how a Desktop created doc will look like on a Mobile Screen. Will it be miniaturized for the small screen? Or, have we to scroll a lot both ways? That would be quite uncomfortable!

I can answer that question for you with a screenshot from my phone. Below is a document created long ago on my PC, open in Microsoft Office Mobile.

As you can see, it fits the screen perfectly. You will have to scroll up and down because the type remains a readable size, but no sideways scrolling necessary. You'll find the same is true of many other mobile office suites. They will adjust your document to suit the screen.

Announcements

Has this happened to you? You start off on a long drive to visit your Great-Aunt Edna in Peoria and about twenty minutes in your phone starts to make that pitiful little sound that warns you the battery is dying.

You know what it sound like... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... BEEP... Guess what? You left your phone's only car charger (which you paid a fortune for at the phone store) in your spouse's car.

You are looking at a 400 mile phone with no cell to use in case of emergency and Edna is going to panic if she can't contact you. She's probably going to call the Highway Patrol to look for you.

And you aren't going to be able to charge your phone when you get to Edna's because she doesn't exactly have phone chargers hanging around the house.I mean, she's still on dial-up - mobile is not her thing. (You really need to introduce her to WorldStart.)

You know what's not very smart? A smartphone with no juice. Then it's a $400 paperweight. YOU NEED A CHARGER! Actually, more than one!

You'll need one to plug in at home or in the office and one for the car and one for your Android phone and one for your iPad... THAT'S GONNA COST YOU A BUNDLE!

Not any more. This amazing 2 in 1 charger works with a wall plug or plugs right into your car. Plus it works with almost any USB powered device.

No more finding out the car charger is in the car and all you have is the wall charger. You've got the charger you need with you all the time.

CHARGE ANYWHERE AT ANY TIME

Android, iPhone, iPad, music player... IT DOESN'T MATTER!

If your device charges with USB, just plug its cable into this dynamite little charger and you are good to go.

No more carrying around five different bulky chargers.

This compact charger is completely portable. Put it your pocket, purse or glove box.

Look at what a major phone store wanted to charge for a wall charger and a car charger!

That's right, $30 for each! SAY WHAT?

We all know they charge outrageous prices, but you've got to be kidding me.

Plus you'd have to buy two devices. SIXTY BUCKS? That's insane.

This 2 in 1 charger does the same job for less than $8! There's no comparison!

In fact, I think this model is better than most pricey chargers. You know how easy it is to bend the pins on a car charger. Check out the protective cover on this baby!

Your car charger is TOTALLY PROTECTED when not in use.

Convenience, Price and Portability! This wins the charger wars hands down!

At only $7.97, you know you want more than one. Who can't use one of these?

Click the store link below right now to add this fantastic limited-time only deal to your cart.

Computers 101

Lisa from Ohio says,

I just got a Windows 8.1 laptop. When it installed updates the last time, it gave me a screen that says "We couldn't complete the updates, undoing changes. Please do not turn off the computer." It stays on that screen and every time I try to turn on the computer it comes up.

Hi Lisa,

It appears this message is not entirely uncommon. However, there is a fairly easy fix.

While it may seem the computer is stuck on the screen, the key is to be patient. A friend had this exact issue, and before Windows would load up, she had to wait around 30 minutes for it to finally load. Once it does load, you can go to the Update Trouble Shooter. This website does have links to the Windows 7, Vista, and XP versions as well. If you cannot connect to the Internet, Windows 8 has a built in troubleshooter, although not as in-depth as the download version.

Download and install the small file, then let it run. Again, this can take a few minutes to finish. Once it is done, it will hopefully fix the errors. Then reboot the computer to be certain the fixes worked. That's it.

On The Move

Diane from Ohio asks:

I saw this post on Facebook. I'm not very tech-savvy, but it has me concerned.

"First, this is VERY important to read and understand. I'm doing my best to look out for all the Facebook Users who aren't as tech savvy as their kids or friends. I'm trying to help explain what's happening because if I don't…nobody else will!

If you're anything like your neighbor…you probably use Facebook on your phone WAY more than you use it on a computer. You've been sending messages from the Facebook app and it probably always asks you if you want to install the Facebook Messenger App.

It's always been OPTIONAL but coming soon to your Facebook experience….it won't be an option…it will be mandatory if you care to send messages from your phone.

No big deal one might think…but the part that the average Facebook User doesn't realize is the permissions you must give to Facebook in order to use the Facebook Messenger App. Here is a short list of the most disturbing permissions it requires and a quick explanation of what it means to you and your privacy.

  • Change the state of network connectivity – This means that Facebook can change or alter your connection to the Internet or cell service. You're basically giving Facebook the ability to turn features on your phone on and off for it's own reasons without telling you.
  • Call phone numbers and send SMS messages – This means that if Facebook wants to…it can send text messages to your contacts on your behalf. Do you see the trouble in this? Who is Facebook to be able to access and send messages on your phone? You're basically giving a stranger your phone and telling them to do what they want when they want!
  • Record audio, and take pictures and videos, at any time – Read that line again….RECORD audio…TAKE pictures….AT ANY TIME!! That means that the folks at Facebook can see through your lens on your phone whenever they want..they can listen to what you're saying via your microphone if they choose to!!

I cut the length of the original question because it would take up this whole article, but I would like to address the major points. First of all, if you have the Facebook mobile app, you've already authorized the same permissions for the Facebook App, so these permissions are nothing new. Also, saying that...

Windows XP - Denial, Anger & Acceptance

Many of you may have heard of Dr. Elizabeth Kubler-Ross's five stages of grief. She named them as denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance. She was talking about catastrophic personal loss, but as the end of Microsoft support for Windows XP nears, I've observed the same reaction in XP users.

1. Denial – Microsoft will change their mind. Someone else might step in and take over. – After 12 years, Microsoft feels XP's time has come and gone. The operating system has security issues and just can't keep up with some of the latest technology. The company is determined to shift towards being a devices and services business and supporting a 12-year-old operating system is just not part of that plan.

2. Anger – We've seen plenty of that in comments, e-mails and questions. Readers have called Microsoft, greedy, lazy, short-sighted, stupid and a lot thing that we can't post on a family-friendly website.

3. Bargaining – Readers have asked if they run up-to-date security software, won't that take care of the problem? What if they are very careful about where they go online or just use it for e-mail. Security providers like Norton and AVG have made it clear that without Microsoft offering the security support – they cannot guarantee the safety of XP systems.

Today's Feature

Bypass The 8.1 Lockscreen

I've got a tip, I think a lot of you are going to LOVE. Judging by the number of questions I've see on the topic, one of your pet peeves about Windows 8 is having to sign in every time you turn on the computer.

In just a few easy steps, you can take care of that issue. But only do this if your computer is where other people aren't going to be able to get their hands on it. If you have a laptop that you take out and about frequently or a work computer with private information or just a roomie who loves to snoop, I would leave the password requirement on.

First, search for netplwiz in your search charm or by typing it in the Metro/Modern screen.

Then click on the icon for Netplwiz.

The User Accounts window will open. Select the account...

Unroll.me

Is your e-mail out of control? Have you subscribed to lots of newsletters to get a discount code? Is the junk mail piling up in your inbox? Well why don't you take control of it today with Unroll.me?

When you arrive at the site I recommend watching the video on the main page. To do so click the Watch Our Video link. The video is just over a minute long and describes why you might want to use Unroll.me. You can also scroll down the page and learn more about what it does. Unroll.me is available for Outlook, Hotmail, MSN, Windows Live, Gmail, Google Apps, Yahoo! Mail, AOL Mail, and iCloud.

If you decide this seems like the solution to your inbox clutter, click the Get Started Now button. To sign up you'll provide your e-mail address, and click continue. I have Gmail, so the next step for me is to grant Unroll.me permission to my inbox, then it will scan your e-mail for subscriptions!

Scanning can take up to two minutes, but if you'd rather not wait you can click the link to be notified via e-mail when it is finished. It found 406 subscriptions in my mailbox, that's mind boggling! Notice the arrows at the bottom of this page, you can click them to scroll through more information about Unroll.me.

Once the scan is complete you'll click the Continue to the Next Step button, where you'll setup your Rollup and manage your subscriptions. The list is sorted alphabetically and you have the option to add it to your rollup or to unsubscribe. I'll be at this for a little while with 406 to manage, but when you're done click Finish button at the top of the screen.

If you accidentally unsubscribe from something you still want, click on Unsubscribed and scroll down the list to find it, and then click Re-Subscribe. I totally got on a roll clicking unsubscribe and had to go back and save some of the newsletters I care about.

Overall I ended up unsubscribing from 316 newsletters! I'm still trying to decide what I want to put on my rollup.

I think this is a really quick and easy way to get the clutter in your e-mail under control right away! Check it out for yourself today!

Cub In A Tree

Angel Wings

Split Rock Moonrise

This photograph almost didn't happen! The day this was created was the day after the full moon, with moonrise coinciding with sunset pretty closely.
