I am using Windows 8.1 and would like to have the Windows 7 start button on the favorites menu. Is this possible?

I'm not sure what you mean by "favorites menu," but there are a few things you can do to make 8.1 navigation similar to 7 that I covered in this article. I would also say that 8.1 has a better navigation that the Start Menu. If you're on the Metro/Modern tile screen you can just start typing the name of any program or file you want and it will pop up in search results.

Or you can open the Search Charm, type the name and find it in seconds. The good news for those missing that Start Menu is that it is back in Windows 10. I've downloaded the technical preview and have been playing with it it for a week or so. Check this out – the Start Menu is back along with the convenience of Live Tiles.

Some are speculating that Microsoft isn't even going to charge those using Windows 8 or 8.1 for the upgrade to 10. That's still just speculation. I'll keep you up-to-date on more Windows 10 developments as they happen.

The GPS That's Right - For LIFE!

So there you were, happily driving through your nephew's city on your first visit to his new house. You've got your GPS going and everythings great until this happens:

"Take right in 100 feet."

But there is no right.

In fact, there's a hospital right there. And it's been there for 3 years?!

Your GPS just tried to send you through an emergency room and you almost listened!

You NEED updated maps.

And this one's got 'em for a LIFETIME!

Easy And Accurate - If you can press a button, you can use this GPS! Setting it up takes just minutes!

Just turn it on and press the "Navigation" button. From there you can set your destination and THAT'S IT! Just follow the directions and enjoy knowing EXACTLY where you're going!

Regular GPS devices have one set of maps that they came with and that's it. They're ALREADY outdated by the time you pick them up off the shelf.

BUT THIS ONE CONSTANTLY UPDATES THE MAP!

Drive assured knowing that if your Magellan is pointing you down a road that road is ACTUALLY going to exist and be open for traffic!

This is simply the best way to travel!

Even if you don't intend to far, a GPS makes it GREAT for locating houses or businesses in unfamiliar neighborhoods.

This part is IMPORTANT! If you're driving alone, especially on long trips, the LAST thing you wanna do is pull over every half hour to double check your map. Well, the second to last thing... because the only worse idea is reading the map while you're driving.

That's an accident WAITING to happen!

This GPS actually VOICES the directions. So while you're driving, you'll hear things like "At next light, turn right!"

It's simple, it's easy, and it's SAFE! The GPS is just like having your own navigator (you know, like a wife or a husband... without the nagging!)

So instead of glancing up and down until you ram headfirst into the car in front of you... you can keep your eyes on the road!

Mount it anyway you want or not at all! The mount comes right off so you can store it easily! It took us about 5 seconds to mount it

Crystal Clear 4.3" Touchscreen - No squinting or head bobbing to try and look at this screen! It's super clear and super big!

What else could make this the best deal you'll see all week...

AN UNBEATABLE PRICE!

Here's what you'd be paying if you went somewhere to grab one of these. Amazon has these new for $99.99.

Now, while they ARE worth that much (since it's the last GPS you'll EVER need) there's no reason to pay that much!

We've got the EXACT same model for... wait for it...

ONLY $49.97!

AND U.S. SHIPPING IS FREE!

THAT'S OVER HALF OFF!

You're saving more than $50 by getting this at WorldStart! WOW!

It doesn't get much better than that.

(Now you can use that money you saved to fund a trip using your brand new GPS!)

Computers 101

Samuel from NJ writes:

Are you forced to buy new apps to work in win 8? Can you use your old apps as in Win XP?

Well, Samuel that depends. It's possible that some of your older programs may work with Windows 8 or 8.1. A great place to check is the Windows Compatibility Center. You can enter the name of an app and find out if it works with the newer OS.

I will also say that many of the apps you will want are included free on Windows 8.1 – Word processing in the form of WordPad, an e-mail client in the form of the Mail App, an image editor in the Photo App as well as in Paint. You'll also find a variety of free games in the Windows store.

I think a lot of people forget that when XP came out, many of the programs that worked With Windows 3 and 95 no longer worked in XP. Thirteen years is a long time, especially in the computer world and, unfortunately, XP can't handle the requirements of many newer programs.

Deb writes:

I'm not sure exactly what questions I will have, but my friend bought a wireless printer to use with her iPad and iPhone. She asked if I can hook them up for her. Is that possible?

Deb, congratulations on being appointed to volunteer tech support. It can sometimes be a thankless job. The good news is that it's perfectly possible. Let's hope your friend purchased a printer that is AirPrint compatible. That enables printing from Macs, iPad, iPhone and iPod touch without the need to install drivers.

Your friend will need to have the latest version of iOS installed on the phone and iPad. Printermodels by Brother, Canon, Dell, Epson, Fuji Xeros, Gestetner, HP, Infotec, Kyocera, Lanier, Leveno, Lexmark, Oki Dta, Olivetti, NRG, NTT, RICOH, Samsung, Savin, Sharp, TA Triumph, Toshiba ad Xerox all support Airprint. Click here for a complete list.

You should be able to find instructions for connecting the particular printer among the printer's documentation or on the manufacturer's website.

Then printing is just a matter of selecting the print function in the...

Living In 3D - Blender - Part 2

In part 1 of this tutorial, I introduced you to a free 3D program called Blender that's comparable to many of the professional programs out there. We went over the basic controls and now we're ready to start a simple project. If you haven't read part one yet, click here to familiarize yourself with Blender.

Let's place other solid objects now: a cone and a sphere.

Go to "Mesh" submenu and choose "UV Sphere". Then do the same thing with "Cone" command.

Have you noticed the colored arrows? This is usually called "gizmo." It shows you the direction on x, y and z axis.

I can't see the sphere I added right now, because it was placed in the center of the scene, by default. Click and drag one of these arrows. I will use the green one.

When you see the sphere...

One More Big Deal

Cords SUCK!

Sorry to be blunt, but they do. They're a pain from start to finish!

First you gotta crawl around to plug them in. Then you have to HOPE the cord is long enough to get where you need it. Not to mention it getting caught on EVERYTHING. And how about trying to replace that stuff, fishing out the cords all over again?

So when they started announcing wireless this and wireless that... we ALL got excited!

But all that happened was "cords" got replaced with... "receivers."

Now instead of having cables all over, you have your USB ports clogged top to bottom and you're spendin' $50 to replace a little USB stick because if you lose it your keyboard or mouse just won't WORK!

No cords, no receivers... just easy, simple, and oh so convenient?

HERE IT IS!

This. Blew. My. MIND!

That means your USB ports stay open. Your computer area isn't adding another cord to that jungle that sticks out the back of it.

BUT THAT'S ONLY A TINY FRACTION OF WHY THIS MOUSE IS SO AWESOME!

First off - WiFi is WAY better than other options!

That ALONE is going to change what you think about computer mice!

But don't forget - this thing is a LASER mouse with 6 BUTTONS!

If you don't know the difference between laser and optical (or ball mice, if you're still on one of those) then here's the short story: laser mice are WAY more accurate!

If you've ever had to fight with a mouse to get your cursor where you want, using this mouse will feel SO refreshing!

And 6 buttons gives you a LOT of power in one hand!

Go forward or backward on webpages right with your mouse! You won't have to hunt for the back button at all - or you could make it do whatever you want!

From changing the DPI, the sensitivity, or even changing what the extra buttons do!

Awesome Touchscrolling Technology!

Don't let this feature slip past ya! You know those scroll wheels that are basically standard on every mouse? If you use them a lot, you probably noticed they eventually start to fail.

They stop "clicking", they get gunked up and barely move, or sometimes they just break entirely!

You NEED your scroll wheel!

It's so simple - just put your finger on the pad and slide it! It's like swiping on a touchscreen phone!

For you, it's almost entirely the same motion... just easier, more natural, and with NO chance for getting gunked up! After all, the more moving parts on a device, the higher its risk for malfunction!

If you use this once, you'll NEVER go back! It's that good!

You can even tap right at the top of the scroll pad to "click" it like a middle-mouse button!

"And Now For The Main Event..."

This mouse isn't just comparable to the $100 you see at the big box stores... it's BETTER! It's a laser mouse, it's got that INCREDIBLE WiFi connectivity, and the touchpad scrolling is going to save you TONS of trouble!

And that's why OTHER places are getting away with trying to sell this for BIG BUCKS! Take a look:

But, you guessed it, I'm showing them how it's done!

You can get this unbelievable WiFi mouse for JUST $18.97 with FREE US SHIPPING!

That's over HALF the price off. And it's brand new, no refurbs!

It's like Christmas came early!

Autumn Magic At Bond Falls

You know, I'm starting to really like Bond Falls. It's located – more or less – in the north central area of Michigan's UP, and let me tell ya – I've been there twice and pulled out a good shot each time! The first time was of the main falls, this time I went for the upper falls. In fact, back when I took the main falls I just -…(More)

Fall Cascades In The Smokies

Sometimes the good shots aren't where you think they are. It was autumn in the Smoky Mountains. If you've never been there in the fall, you can be forgiven for thinking it's a quiet, peaceful time of year when the tourists have flown home and you have the place to yourself. Nope, it's a zoo. I think fall is actually getting as busy as – or even busier than - ...(More)
