Patrica from Florida writes:

I am 76 years old. Please do not laugh at me. In excel I lost the bottom scroll bar. I can not move left or right. Is there a way to retrieve it?. Please help.

I am certainly not laughing because this has happened to me. Here's how to fix it. Click the file tab filetab or if you're using Excel 2007, the Office Button officebutton.

Then select Options. When the Options window opens, select Advanced and scroll down to Display Option For this work book. Make sure Show vertical scroll bar is checked.

showverticalscroll

That should bring back your scroll bar.

90 dB is LOUD!

In fact, smoke detectors are generally about 100 dB! So you KNOW when this thing goes off, you'll be hearing it!

We all could use a little more home security, but who wants to pay out hundreds a year (plus installation fees!) for some overcomplicated mess?

These little door/window alarms are all you need!

See, they come with an alarm and a sensor.

You put the sensor on the frame, and the alarm on the door or window, with the opening in between!

I don't think it could get any simpler than that!

(Of course, you can turn it off with the simple switch whenever you want! So you don't have to hear it EVERY time that door or window opens, just when you know it shouldn't be!)

Don't think of this as just protection against intruders - these work GREAT for keeping tabs on any cabinets or interior doors too!

If you want to make sure a young child isn't getting into the cleaning products, or making sure you know when your business's delivery door is being opened, this is the best solution!

You won't find ANY security company that can compete with just $2.97 for an alarm that you can setup in seconds! It's just too good!

This sale is INSANE - but it only lasts until Sunday when these go up to $4.97 !

Hi!
Help!!! I use Windows 7 with Firefox browser. This morning a Search Tab was on my browser that I didn't install. Took some time to figure out it is a BING search tab. I have looked and looked in both programs and add ons to try and uninstall it, but I am unable to find it to get rid of it. I already use Google and sometimes ASK…I REALLY, REALLY am disliking having this Search tab take up so much space on my tabs space. HOW do I get rid of it???? :( (I find plenty of help in removing a Bing Search Bar…not just the TAB)

The search bar and search tab is a built-in function of the later versions Firefox and I'm going to look at how they both work. You may see Bing as your first option as a search engine, but if you click the drop-down, you'll see other options like Google or Yahoo and you can easily switch to search on those platforms.

searchbargoogle

You will also see the same options if you open a new tab in Firefox and click on your search provider. You can switch to any search provider you prefer.

dropdowntap

You can change these tabs pretty easily. Just click the little gear sign in the upper right of the page and your new tabs will come up blank with no search engine.

blanksearchtab

By default, Firefox comes with Google, Yahoo, Bing, Amazon.com, DuckDuckGo, eBay, Titter and Wikipedia search engines. You can also add particular search engines. From the drop-down menu, choose Manage search engines.

managesearch

Choose Get more search engines…

getmoresearch

And you can choose from a list of options.

searchengineoptions

You can also adjust the position of search engines in the list or remove them.

moveremovesearch

You can completely remove the search bar by right-clicking over the the search box and selecting Remove from toolbar.

removefromtoolbar

Hope this helps!

In Part 1 of our series, Lillian from Milwaukee wrote:

I don't know the difference between an I-pad, or I-phone, or a tablet, or a smart phone, etc. etc. And not only that, They seem to be always changing. So…could you possible explain all of the differences, in them. And what exactly is wi fi, and blue tooth? there are so many new gadgets since I first took computer courses. And I don't know how to text. I am 70 yrs old, and don't find it necessary to text someone. If I want to say something to them, I'll just call, or e-mail. So why is it necessary to have a laptop, or a tablet, or a I-pad, or a touch screen phone?

In a previous article, I broke down the basics of WiFi connections. Today I'll get to her questions about devices.

Lillian, basically a laptop, tablet or smartphone is the same thing as your desktop computer. It's a computer. It's just smaller and more portable. A smartphone is just a small tablet with an app that allows you to make and receive voice calls.

Smartphone Data Usage

The main difference between the phone and the tablet and laptop is the SIM card. This allows the phone to have a phone number and make and receive calls from land lines or cell phones. It also allow you to call 911.

The reason you would want a laptop, tablet or smartphone is the same reason you want your desktop. You want a computer. The advantage to a laptop is that...

Replace XP With Ubuntu - Part 3

With the end of support for Windows XP, many of you are looking for alternatives that don't involve spending hundreds of dollars on a new operating system or perhaps thousands on a new computer. For many of you, the free Linux Ubuntu operating system could be just the ticket. In this article, we discussed the advantages of Ubutnu.

In part one of this article we showed you how to download Ubuntu for free and in part 2, we began the installation process. Now, we will finish up that process.

We have already backed up your XP files, burned an ISO DVD or made a bootable USB drive, download Ubuntu and selected the option to replace Windows XP with Linux Ubuntu.

Now, you will start the installation. Select the drive where you want to install Ubuntu. Click on "Install Now" button to start.

Note: Generally Windows XP files are installed on local drive C. So to remove the existing one and install fresh Ubuntu, select the drive where you have your existing XP files.

Choosing your location is next. If you are connected with Internet, then it will be selected automatically. If not, then you have to manually select your current location.

Press "Continue" after successfully selecting your location.

Next comes selecting your preferred keyboard layout. You can manually select from various layouts provided by default, or also you can use "detect keyboard layout" for Ubuntu to help you select your desired keyboard layout. Click on "Continue" after completing this step.

ake The Best Thanksgiving Photos Ever

Thanksgiving kicks off the much-awaited holiday season and all photographers look forward to these winter holidays because they can capture moments and memories that are cherished by everyone and also enjoyed by the future generations. If you are not a pro at capturing these moments, here are ways to take great Thanksgiving images…

  1. Think before you leap
Pre-planning is a very vital step for any sort of photography. Planning what shots to take and what to include in your frame is crucial. Empty your memory cards. Recharge your camera batteries to avoid disappointment in the middle of the shoot. Clean the lenses of your choice and prepare your lens kit. Explore the location and note down the specific details of the place, including the ambiance and lighting conditions. Take test shots to understand your composition. This makes your job easier before the actual shoot.
  2. Get up close
Zoom in to that aspect of the subject that the eye would normally concentrate on. Zooming into a subject depends on your choice of composition of a subject. Always remember to fill the frame with details that would brighten the holiday spirit. During thanksgiving, the greatest captures could be the turkey freshly out of the oven, the wine glasses, the wreaths on the floor and the flower arrangements around the house.

  3. Group them up
Holidays means many family photographs and candid shots to capture future nostalgia. Stay away from the boring and opt for unique and out of the box compositions. Compose your family shot in such a manner that none of the members are out of the frame. If you need to be in the frame, set the auto-timer of the camera and include yourself in it. Remember to include your thanksgiving meal as the centrpiece of the frame and make sure that your cook flaunts the meal. The main aim of clicking a family photo is to include all the family members within one frame. Avoid using flash and let the natural light from the table be the key source of illumination. And make it stand out with its uniqueness, like this action photo below.

  4. Go candid
Candid shots are the best captures. Do not always force your subject to pose...

One of my main worries was that the site would store my search, and then if it were breached be this awesome database for hackers. So I headed right over to the FAQ page before doing anything. Thankfully, the site doesn't log any of your personal information when you do a search, so you're safe to check if your email address of have been hit by a data breach.

So how does it work? Just type in your e-mail address or username into the search field and click the pwnd? button. I didn't realize I was holding my breath until the results came up and declared the good news that my address wasn't compromised. I let out a huge sigh of relief.

You an even set it up so that it will notify you if your address or username comes up in a future breach. All you have to do is click Notify Me at the top of the page, enter your e-mail address or username, fill out the are you human puzzle, and click notify me of pwnage button.

If you'd like to learn more about the idea behind the site you can learn more here. If you're interested in the technical information behind the site you can head over here to learn all about it.

This is a great way to check out if you've been compromised in a data breach, so check it out today!

Nose To Nose

This was captured shortly after I drove into Yellowstone from Gardiner. Normally, expectations tend to be low as you make the 5 mile or so drive from Gardiner to Mammoth, but today would prove an exception to that rule. As I drove along, admiring the freshly fallen snow, I rounded a corner and spotted a group of elk congregating in an area known as the "Chinese Gardens". I wasted no time maneuvering …(More)

Big Sable Lighthouse

Finally got it! This shot was literally 2 years, 5 hikes, and two separate trips in the making – but I was finally – finally - able to pull it off June 2012! Grant and I had been to Ludington State Park the year before and stayed several days in an attempt to get a good shot of the Big Sable Lighthouse – and we failed. ...(More)

Sleeping Bear Stormy Sunset

Talk about a last chance! We had been trying for three days to get something – anything – at Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore. It doesn't seem to be a great morning location, so that left us with just three chances – one for each evening we were there. The first evening saw a sunset that was blocked by clouds, the second was ...(More)

Black Bear On Alert

I really love this black bear! We'd seen him (I think it's a him) a few times in the Cade's Cove area of Smoky Mountain National Park and he never disappointed us. Working with him does require a bit of a "soft touch" since he's always a bit more nervous then most of the other bears in that area. It sure doesn't take much to force...(More)

Rainbow Falls, Watkins Glen

YES! Finally got it! The first time I saw this waterfall, I was floored. You come around a corner and at first you just see the "auxiliary" falls on the left. Then in the course of just a few excited steps the rest of this amazing scene seems to materialize right in front of you! As the bridge and three tiered falls comes into view, you're literally...(More)
