Dear Friends, The Solstice is near. Our warmest greetings to you and your loved ones as we approach this great turning point of the year. Tomorrow night is the first of our four Winter Solstice performances at New York’s greatest cathedral [ details & tickets ]. The Sun Gong has been rigged from the hundred-foot vault; the stages and the lighting trusses are up; the Solstice Tree is adorned with its hundreds of gongs, bells and chimes. And Danny Rivera arrives tomorrow from Puerto Rico to thrill us with his soulful and sunny voice. Once again, I'm feeling nourished by this special time of the year, and thought I might share a few of my thoughts with you, which emerged during a recent conversation with a friend: “Solstice is universal because it has to do with our relationship with the Sun … and there’s nobody on Earth that doesn’t have some relationship with the Sun. ... For northern people at this time of year, we’re all together in the cold and dark, and somewhere deep down within us is a yearning for sunshine. “So there is perhaps a deeper need to reach out to each other than at this time of year. There is a deeper yearning to reconnect, a yearning for community and relatedness. … “Music has a great ability to bring people onto common ground. Within the embracing and uplifting ambience of the Cathedral, in the context of this universal milestone of Solstice, this celebration can offer a deepened experience of unity with the peoples and creatures of the world’s community.” Read the full conversation >> Thank you for being part of our ongoing solstice journey. With gratitude, For living music, Paul |
