EVERYTHING NEW
OWES EVERYTHING
TO THE OLD...

Hearing a brass band outside my window right now as I write this, and thinking how this could never happen if I lived in, say, Dallas or San Francisco. So, how great is that?

We have a tradition of music on the streets in New Orleans; we have other features of this crazy city that you'll never find anywhere else, and to tell you the truth, when living gets frustrating (and it does), I think about where else I'd want to live, and I just can't think of anyplace I'd rather be.

Lots of newcomers are migrating to New Orleans, and I hope and pray that they take the time to "get" New Orleans--and I don't mean just the party mentality--I'm talking about the deep soulfullness of our community, which sometimes is a bit rooted in dysfunction.

 OH CRAP, IT'S
CHRISTMAS

...our sentiments exactly.
Lusty wisecracking blonde chanteuse Debbie Davis and husband, sousaphonist Matt Perrine, finished a Christmas album this year and perform Yuletide and their December 21 at Cafe Istanbul. Read more about the "crappy" Christmas in John Swenson's story in OffBeat.

Our cover features the incredibly talents and sartorially splendid bassist

There are some seriously bad-ass female musicians in New Orleans, and OffBeat features just a few of them in an in-depth look at the
Nightingales, a collaboration of the stellar female musicians in New Orleans.

We also cover the best Christmas music, Christmas New Orleans-style; a revamp of Galactic; drinks from the Marigny Brasserie; plus an interview with Louisiana's newest country star, Hunter Hayes.
