100 Years Ago: "Figures and Floats Conspicuous in Brilliant Array of New Year Mummers Today," Evening Public Ledger, January 01, 1915

Every New Year's Day people gather to watch the annual Philadelphia Mummers Parade, one of the longest running traditions in the country. Officially sponsored by the city starting in 1901, mummers parades have been held in Philadelphia since the 1800's as a way to celebrate the New Year. In 1915 the Evening Public Ledger described the "Thousands Massed Along Sidewalks as Mummers Pirouette in the Big Carnival of Joy" (http://chroniclingamerica.loc.gov/lccn/sn83045211/1915-01-01/ed-1/seq-2/) and featured images and descriptions of the prize winners for fancy club and fancy costume (among others)...Read more about it!
