Google search takedowns top 345 million in 2014
Google was asked to remove over 345 million infringing links from its search engine last year according to some maths done by Torrentfreak, which has gone through the weekly reports the web giant publishes. Assuming those figures are correct, that's a 75% increase on 2013.

Under US law Google is obliged to remove from its search engine links to copyright infringing material if asked to do so by a copyright owner, and it has a system in place via which rights owners can issue takedown requests. Some companies and organisations now issue such requests on an industrial scale, the UK's record industry trade body the BPI being one such group. Indeed Torrentfreak names the BPI as the most prolific takedown issuer of last year, having requested 60 million links be removed.

Torrentfreak notes that in 2008, before the content industries made takedown-issuing a routine part of their rights management operations, Google received a few dozen takedowns, whereas it now regularly removes a million links a day.

As noted in this article in a recent CMU trends report, while Google might point to the sheer scale of its takedown operation as proof it takes piracy seriously, many copyright owners would argue that the high number of takedowns being issued is proof that the web firm isn't doing enough.

Many content companies reckon that Google should instigate domain-wide takedowns on sites that are prolific copyright infringers, and especially those that have been subject to web-blocking injunctions. But Google insists that takedowns relate only to specific URLs.

If Google were to start doing domain-wide takedowns, the overall number of takedown requests would likely decline. For example, Torrentfreak notes that over five million takedowns were issued last year for URLs associated with each of the following domains: 4shared.com, rapidgator.net and uploaded.net.

Lamb Of God fan sues Live Nation over spinal injuries after gig fall
A man is suing Live Nation over spinal injuries he sustained when he was "trampled" at a Lamb Of God show in 2012.

According to reports, William Tarantino claims that during a performance by the metal band at the Oakdale Theatre in Wallingford, Connecticut in November 2012, he was "violently knocked to the ground and trampled, sustaining ... severe [and] painful injuries ... some of which are permanent".

He accuses Live Nation, the show's promoter, of "negligence and carelessness" by failing to "provide adequate security" to deal with what would likely be a raucous audience, based on other Lamb Of God gigs. Though Tarantino's complaint seems to describe metal audiences generally, and it's not clear what measures he feels should have been put in place by Live Nation to avoid the sudden surge that led to his injuries.

Tarantino is seeking in excess of $75,000 in damages. Lamb Of God themselves are not named on the lawsuit.

Universal and Havas announce mega-data alliance
Good news data fans. Thanks to a brand new alliance announced just there yesterday the "billion of data points that Universal Music and its artists generate through music, ticket and merchandising sales, streaming, social media and airplay" will now be "contextually analysed" by the "world-class algorithmic and data scientists" of advertising and communications group Havas.

Which is very exciting indeed. Contextual analysis is my very favourite kind of analysis, and so much better than all that non-contextual analysis you hear about these days. And as if to only confirm just how exciting all this is, Universal boss Lucian Grainge and Havas big cheese Yannick Bolloré rocked up at the CES convention in Las Vegas yesterday to tell us all about it. And there was a big bag of contextually analysed data for all those in attendance.
With all that freshly cut data in the air everyone got a little bit giddy.

But not Grainge. No, he remained serious throughout, stressing just how much this new alliance would benefit all the popstars on his books. "We want to continue to find new revenue and marketing opportunities for all of our artists around the world" he said. "By leveraging our industry-leading big data tools and working with forward-thinking companies such as Havas to supercharge our efforts to realise previously untapped revenues from consumer brands and other new business partners".

Bolloré, meanwhile, enthused: "Music transmits emotions, cultural symbols, and values like no other form of creative expression. By managing the most successful artists and largest music communities in the world, Universal Music is at the forefront of the industry and has already gathered unique consumer insights and databases to empower its labels, artists and fans. This first Global Music Data Alliance will allow our clients and other brands to further expand the common passion they share about music with fans and create more meaningful experiences for them".

Perhaps most interestingly, the GMDA, as they're calling it, will not only access all the data Universal's labels are sitting on, but also stats from the mega-major's Bravado merchandising business and its sister company, Vivendi Ticketing, which owns See Tickets. The sell to Universal's artists is that the new data crunching will identify commercial opportunities for them, while potential brand partners will be able to use the insights to better identify the artist and genres they should be working with.

So maybe not quite the nonsense alliance you might have thought back there in the first paragraph. Though they did actually use the words "data points will be contextually analysed by world-class algorithmic and data scientists", so your cynicism was justified I think.

Irwin Steinberg 1920-2014
Music industry veteran Irwin Steinberg died at his home in Vermont on 29 Dec, it has been announced. He was 94.

Serving in the Air Corps after leaving the University Of Chicago, Steinberg entered the music industry after the Second World War, first serving as CEO of Mercury Records and later at Polygram, a label he was subsequently associated with for three decades.

He latterly moved into music business education, working with Columbia College Of The Arts in Chicago, while offering consultancy to various digital music companies and serving on the board of custom CD compilation firm Musicmaker.com.

Steinberg is survived by his wife Dominique Moyse, three children and four grandchildren.

Joe Cocker 1944-2014
Blues-rock man Joe Cocker died just before Christmas, aged 70, after losing his fight against lung cancer.

Born John Robert Cocker in Sheffield, he initially trained as an apprentice gasfitter, later sidelining that to instead form and lead the band Arnold & The Avengers. He eventually signed a solo deal with Decca and released his first track, a cover of The Beatles' 'I'll Cry Instead', in 1964. Whilst the record did poorly and the contract lapsed, forcing Cocker to go back to his gas board job, three years later he released a second Beatles cover, the Jimmy Page-featuring 'With A Little Help From My Friends', scoring his first UK number one in the process.

Cocker also proved popular in the States, not least thanks to an iconic appearance at America's Woodstock festival in 1969. He released his acclaimed 'Joe Cocker!' LP in the weeks following the festival, this featuring his takes on The Beatles' 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window' and 'Something'. Having dissolved his then live band, The Grease Band, he formed a new 21-man collective called Mad Dogs & Englishmen, playing a taxing 65-date tour of The USs.

Having lapsed into a heavy drinking habit, Cocker largely took a break from writing and recording until 1972 when he began playing live again, though his world tour was cut short by a high-profile arrest in Australia for possession of marijuana. He released a latter series of LPs, framed by 'I Can Stand A Little Rain' and 'Luxury You Can Afford', whilst battling alcoholism and dealing with significant debts to his label at the time, A&M Records.

In 1982, Cocker found new success with his and singer Jennifer Warnes' collaborative track 'Up Where We Belong', which won a Grammy and an Oscar as part of the soundtrack to the hit film 'An Officer And A Gentleman'.

He released a chain of well-received LPs over the next two decades, taking high billings at Nelson Mandela's 70th Birthday Tribute gala, and also joining with Phil Collins and Brian May to sing 'With A Little Help From My Friends' at Queen Elizabeth II's Golden Jubilee concert in 2002. He was made OBE in 2007, and released his 20th LP, covers compilation 'Hymn For My Soul', that same year.

On hearing of Cocker's death, his manager Barrie Marshall said: "He was without the doubt the greatest rock and soul voice ever to come out of Britain and remained the same man throughout his life. He was a true star, a kind and humble man who loved to perform. Anyone who ever saw him live will never forget him".

Adding to a flood of tributes, Paul McCartney said: "Joe was a lovely northern lad who I loved a lot and, like many people, I loved his singing. I was especially pleased when he decided to cover 'With a Little Help from My Friends', it was just mind-blowing. He totally turned the song into a soul anthem and I was forever grateful to him for doing that".

Cocker is survived by his wife Pam, stepdaughter Zoey Schroeder, and two grandchildren.

  Approved: Skinny Girl Diet
"Fierce girl gang" Skinny Girl Diet are teenagers Amelia, Delilah and Ursula.

Raised on a healthy-sized diet of rock and riot grrrl bands like The Breeders, Bikini Kill, Babes In Toyland and The Slits (in fact, The Slits' Viv Albertine is now their biggest fan), SKD first formed to fill the gaping girl-shaped void they (and everyone else) noticed in the British rock scene. They've since released several EPs and played every dive bar in London, twice, driving their scratchy, screamy songs home at whiplash pace.

Hear that typified in leery psychedelic pill 'Dimethyltryptamine (DMT)', and also in 'Homesick', both from last year's 'Skinny Girl Diet' EP, and/or catch the band at London's ICA Gallery on 14 Jan, when they'll be adding live noise to a series of short film screenings by director Jennifer Reeder.

Danny Brown writing an inspirational book 4 kidz
'XXX' rapper Danny Brown is writing a non-XXX book, for kids, in the style of whimsical/irritating rhyming scribe Dr Seuss. Brown, who has a thirteen year old daughter, says he is writing it to inspire girls (and boys) to have confidence in themselves.

Explaining it all an interview with Australian radio station Triple J, he said: "It's been taking me forever to finish. It's really about self-esteem in black girls, I guess. You know how black women do so much - process their hair, change their eye colour - it's really about a little girl who does all these things to herself and changes herself and she realises she's just better off the way she is".

He added: "It's something for my daughter... I've got to finish it though, I want it to be real Dr Seuss-y. 'The Grinch', 'Green Eggs And Ham', and 'One Fish, Two Fish' - what was going on in that guy's brain to be able to write those things?"

Then he went: "I think I AM Dr Seuss! I'm The Grinch, I'm all his characters come to life in rap music".

Yeah. And for another thing, Danny Brown is also, amidst all that inspirational fiction-writing and plotting to steal Christmas, finding time to work on a follow-on to his 2013 LP 'Old'. He claims he is "recording like a maniac", saying: "I'm just going real hard with this album... I want to put out the best possible album I can put out with this one. [I] always gotta try and top myself and who else is better competition than yourself?. I listen to 'Old' and it's like, 'I don't know how I'm gonna beat this one'. I'm really, really trying my hardest and just make the best possible music I can make for the people".

"Devastated" Lykke Li clears diary (for the sake of her health)
Swedish popstar Lykke Li is taking time off from 'the road' (and has cancelled several international festival appearances) because, she says, she's ill and tired. Or, in Li's slightly more vivid words "utterly devastated". Gosh.

In an Instagram post, the singer told fans: "Sometimes we push and push but the body simply won't follow. I gave it all I had, my body, heart, and soul. After seven years of touring my health is screaming/begging for me to listen/heal/slow down. Thank you so much for understanding. Thank you for listening to my bleeding heart and watching me dance in the dark these past years. I love you. I will come back. Stronger. But for now my loves, I have to rest. You can't always 'win'... Take care of yourselves! You mean the world to me".

This is all kind of like the time Lykke Li had a breakdown of sorts whilst shopping in M&S. Only not really, because in this case, no raspberries got spilled.

NERD preview ode to SpongeBob
So, as was confirmed by a flash appearance at Odd Future's Camp Flog Gnaw Carnival back in November, Pharrell Williams, Chad Hugo and Shay Haley's long-silent alliance NERD is active again.

All the band have to show for it so far is... three tracks 'inspired' by SpongeBob SquarePants, titled 'Squeeze Me', 'Patrick Star' and 'Sandy Squirrel'. They'll all feature on the forthcoming film not based on SpongeBob's not-real life, 'The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out Of Water', with NERD man Hugo identifying their vibe as "a psychedelic, otherworldy type of thing".

Ahead of the big 'SpongeBob' premiere in early Feb, stream 'Squeeze Me' via Spotify.

Jens Lekman to story his 2015 in 52 songs
Sweden-based artist Jens Lekman has resolved to write and release 52 songs this year, one per week, kind of like entries in a big, musical e-diary.

"While working on my next album, I will sit down once a week, write down my thoughts, turn them into a song and share it with you directly", he says. "Think of these little songs as postcards. Little greetings from me to you".

He adds: "I've been longing to share my thoughts and life with you a bit more. I've been longing to write about things that make sense one particular day but that might make no sense once the album comes out".

At the end of 2015, Lekman explains, the idea is to "sit down, you and me, and listen through these 52 songs, and remember where we were and when we were there, who we kissed and who we missed. I'm looking forward to that".

How cosy. Hear Lekman's first missive, a track titled 'Postcard #1', now.

The Overflow, Duff McKagan, Akon and other good times

Other notable announcements and developments today...

• 7digital yesterday announced it is powering a new app for Christian music consumers in the US called The Overflow, which will provide streaming access to 370,000 tracks from Christian, gospel and related genres. 7digital chief Simon Cole says: "The Overflow knows their audience well and can foster a great discovery experience through smart media partnerships and focused curation".

• Music therapy charity Nordoff-Robins has announced Julie Whelan as its new CEO, replacing Marcus Stephan who only took on the role in February 2013. Whelan joins from the Dame Kelly Holmes Trust, which she co-founded seven years ago.

• The first Online Radio Conference - that is a conference about online radio, rather than a radio conference that is online - will take place at Shoreditch's Ace Hotel on 29 Jan. Speakers include NTS Radio co-founder Femi Edmund Adeyemi, Rinse FM presenter Carly Wilford, and Mixcloud's Nikhil Shah. Full details here.

• Black Keys drummer Patrick Carney was hit with a "giant wave slam hazard" whilst vacationing in St Barths, which I think means he was hit by a big wave. Anyway, he dislocated his shoulder, as fans can confirm via this photo of his arm looking weird.

• One-time Guns N Roses/Velvet Revolver bassist Duff McKagan is working on a light-hearted 'guide to life' titled 'How To Be A Man (And Other Illusions)'. The book, which Duff says is also a "city guide", will hit shops in May.

• Still-warm CMU Artists Of The Year 2014 Babymetal have shared a clip trailing their new single, 'Road Of Resistance'. Sneak a peak at the track here.

• The mighty Akon is to release a five-part LP, his first sizeable serving since 2008's 'Freedom'. It will span five 'genres', and they are: euro, pop, urban, island and world. Akon is already streaming a track from each disc on his website, www.akon.com.

• Rap creeps Death Grips have gone and released a noisy body of instrumental tracks, block-titled 'Fashion Week', on YouTube. In addition, and despite the fact that they've already split, DG also have 'Jenny Death', the last half of their last-gasp dual-LP, 'The Powers That B', still to come... potentially on 10 Feb if this Amazon listing is right.

• Gruff Rhys is to follow up his 2011 Christmas EP with a Valentine's Day single, titled 'Married To Me'. The duet is a collaboration with The Earth, the band featuring fellow ex-Super Fury Animal Dafydd Ieuan. The track will be out on 14 Feb (obviously).

• Would you like a free compilation of tracks from the Erased Tapes label? Sure you would. Eleven tracks form artists including Peter Broderick, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Nil Frahm are yours to be had if and when you create an account on the label's website here.

• It's sold out now, but I feel we should at least mention that PJ Harvey is going to be recording her album right in front of the ears and eyes of paying punters at Somerset House in London on 16 Jan. She and her band will be in a box that they can't see out of, so as not to be distracted. What fun. Anyway, as I said, you can't go, but here are details.

Alex James and David Cameron 'hung out' on New Year's Eve
It's almost an entire year since Alex James last bothered us with one of his forays into ridiculousness - may we remind you of the time he applied to trademark the term 'Britpop' for drinks - but you always know another one of these stories is coming. And this time it's back to the most unforgivable of all his indiscretions: being friends with David Cameron.

Hey, I know you've convinced yourself that he looks uncomfortable being near the Prime Minister in that picture you saw in the Daily Mail. And he does. But there are other pictures. Look at them. They're just hanging out like it wasn't even a horrific sight for everyone there in person and latterly on the internet to behold.

And now The Sun is claiming that Cameron spent New Year's Eve round James' house. 'Maybe it was a big party for all the neighbours', you cry. 'Maybe it would have just been awkward not to invite him'. And maybe you're right, but The Sun's source says this: "Alex kept trying to get [David] to sing karaoke and he looked like he was almost persuaded. But that was the point he realised it was probably time to go home. Samantha [Cameron] was a great laugh and dancing around. It looked like she was playing a leg as a guitar at one point".

'Dave' may not have sung karaoke, but he did, it is alleged, do some "dad dancing". And now all of that is in your head. Horrible. Apparently Gary Kemp was there too. I bet he sang 'Gold'. I bet he insisted on it. And I bet Cameron punched the air every time the chorus came round and then told everyone how much he loves The Smiths for no reason.

Anyway, as ever, the real reason I've put you through all of this is so that I can link back to this article about the time Alex James 'researched' the food industry.
