Live Nation Labs closes
This is 2015, in case you hadn't noticed, and if there's one thing we don't need in this bold new year it's labs. I mean, labs, who needs them? Not me, not you, not anyone, that's who. And certainly not a leading live music giant.

Which is presumably why Live Nation Labs is no more, according to various sources. Yes, the live music firm has seemingly wound up its digital innovations unit which was created when it bought online metrics firm BigChampagne in 2011.

It was thought the Labs would help Live Nation capitalise on the phenomenal database of music consumers it acquired when it merged with Ticketmaster in 2010 by developing and/or acquiring clever digital and data tools for use in the live, music and entertainment industries.

Some interesting acquisitions and projects followed, though it's not clear how fruitful the venture has been overall, given the multi-million purchase of Big Champagne required to kick the whole thing off (widely reported as $30 million, though one source told Billboard it was closer to $12 million, but still a sizable investment).

Some insiders say that the Labs project was never really embraced by Live Nation at large, and especially the firm's existing digital departments that saw it as a threat, which may have hindered its efforts to create new platforms to be utilised by the tours, events and artists Live Nation owns and represents.

All that said, information about the closure of Labs is currently minimal. We do know that Big Champagne co-founder Eric Garland and a key exec at the digital unit Ethan Kaplan both departed last month after their soon-to-expire contracts were not renewed. Big Champagne's other founder Joe Fleischer will seemingly stay with Live Nation, though most Labs employees will be moved to other parts of the business, mainly within Ticketmaster.

Meanwhile, according to Digital Music News, one of Live Nation Labs' acquisitions - EDM service Boomrat - will be merged in with the online operations of Live Nation-allied EDM franchise Insomniac.

Beats sued by former By Dre partner
Another Beats lawsuit? Well, why the hell not. The now Apple subsidiary is facing another lawsuit from a former business partner (in addition to the one being pursued by Steven Lamar), this one from Monster LLC, the tech company that originally made the overpriced Beats By Dre headphones but which ended its alliance with the firm in 2012 in something of a messy divorce.

Though possibly more messy that we realised if the new lawsuit from Monster is to believed. According to the Wall Street Journal, it accuses the Dre and Jimmy Iovine headed Beats company of some dodgy dealing around its previous acquisition - by phone maker HTC in 2011 - which enabled the firm to call time on its Monster alliance.

Monster says that while Beats sold 51% of the business to HTC, it bought 25.5% back a month later (ultimately buying HTC out of the company entirely). The initial deal was done this way, says the lawsuit, so that Beats could utilise a change of ownership clause in its deal with Monster allowing it to cut its business partner out of the equation. As a result of the supposed change in ownership Monster says it had to transfer some of its IP over to Beats costing it millions in lost revenue.

To add insult to injury, Monster CEO Noel Lee, who retained a small stake in Beats even after his partnership with the firm ended, says he sold those shares in 2013 after being advised by a board member that no major transaction was on the horizon. Beats, of course, was then bought in a $3.2 billion deal by Apple last year, the latter of which said the purchase had been "years in the making".

Lee also reckons Dre and Iovine have recently rewritten history editing out his company's role in creating the hugely successful Beats headphone business. So, lots of grievances there then. Though the core legal claim is that Beats "fraudulently acquired" the Beats By Dre line of headphones through the allegedly "sham transaction" with HTC.

Neither Apple nor Beats have responded to the lawsuit.

LeeFest taking gap year, back in 2016
Festival-that-started-as-an-illegal-garden-party LeeFest is to take a year off in 2015 - sort of like Glastonbury does with its 'fallow year' scheme - before moving to a new, bigger site in 2016.

The charitable fest, which was invented in 2006 by a then sixteen year old Lee Denny in his parents' garden in Beckenham, has since grown in size to a 2500-capacity weekender with camping, headlined last year by The Cribs, Frightened Rabbit and Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip.

Denny and Team LeeFest now say that: "After an amazing five years the event has outgrown its current home at Highams Farm, and the time has come to move on".

Confirming this will mean taking a year off, they explain in a statement: "We're gutted that we won't get to see you all this summer, but this will serve to make LeeFest all the more awesome. The festival is still being run entirely by volunteers, despite its unbelievable growth, so we often don't get a chance to work on the big picture stuff. This is a unique opportunity for us to make LeeFest more sustainable, more creative and even more ambitious in the long term".

Lee and friends add they will confirm details of LeeFest 2016, the festival's tenth edition, "as soon as possible".

Bieber is new groin of Calvin Klein
So that time Justin Bieber weirdly responded to a rather unwelcoming audience at a Fashion Rocks event by stripping to his pants, perhaps he was actually auditioning. And look, he's got the gig.

Yes, the Bieber boy is the new face, torso, legs and groin of Calvin Klein, and if you don't or won't believe me, you'll have to take a look at this photo of him showing off in his favourite boxers.

Announcing his new job on Instagram he wrote "officially a part of the legacy - check out @calvinklein for more. #mycalvins. #newfaceofcalvinklein". Now he's on board perhaps the fashion firm could make him an orange pair that he could wear in his next photo shoot at the offices of the LAPD.

In unrelated news, Bieber recently broke his "damn" foot while playing 'soccer'. Perhaps he was auditioning for a brand partnership selling orthopaedic bandages.

  Approved: William Onyeabor
The internet has got itself in a right old state over the finding of a newly-uploaded song/YouTube video by 'lost' Nigerian popstar and "elusive mystery man of music" William Onyeabor, who hasn't released anything in years; nay, decades. The Bible-inspired song, titled 'Many Mansions', first surfaced on YouTube in Sept 2014, but has apparently escaped wider notice until now.

As is investigated in Noisey's excellent short film of 2014, 'Fantastic Man', Onyeabor became a big synth-pop-making deal in his native Nigeria in the 1970s and 1980s. Having disappeared off - becoming a born-again Christian and wealthy industrialist - following the release of his last LP in 1985, he has only rarely been seen or heard from since.

Onyeabor's work re-entered the spotlight in 2013, 'Searching For Sugar Man'-style, when David Byrne's world label Luaka Bop re-released a pair of his records. Then, in a very recent and extremely rare radio chat with BBC 6 Music's Lauren Laverne, Onyeabor said that he had new material in the pipeline, which really was a thrill.

So, take from all that what you will. While everyone got very excited by the 'Many Mansions' clip, which certainly features a modern-looking Onyeabor, the celebrations were cut short when the video was hit with a takedown notice from The Orchard. Which at least seems to verify its legitimacy.

As you can't watch that video, here instead is 'Atomic Bomb' from Luaka Pop compilation 'Who Is William Onyeabor?'.

The Haxan Cloak on board with Björk LP
The Haxan Cloak, aka Triangle-signed Brit Bobby Krlic, has officially joined the slow trickle of confirmed collaborators on Björk's forthcoming LP. Drip... drip... drip.

It's a fairly short list so far, consisting only of Krlic and Venezuelan producer Arca - who in The Fader's Oct/Nov 2014 cover story was cited, mistakenly it now appears, as the Björk record's "sole producer".

Contesting that, The Haxan Cloak said on Twitter yesterday: "I can now share, with equal parts humility and excitement, the last few months I've been working with Björk on her new record. An honour".

Sting's Broadway musical to close after failing to cover costs
Try as he might, Sting just can't make New York interested in the Newcastle shipbuilding industry of the 1980s. Not even with singing and dancing. Poor Sting. Poor Newcastle. Poor ships.

The former Policeman's musical 'The Last Ship' opened on Broadway in October to good reviews, but has subsequently failed to pull in a sizable enough audience to cover its $625,000 per week running and $15 million set up costs, reports The New York Times. This despite Sting himself joining the cast in November, replacing Jimmy Nail. Poor Jimmy.

In an email to staff and other supporters obtained by the NYT producers Jeffrey Seller and Kathryn Schenker said this week: "We have been bewildered and saddened by our inability to sustain an audience for this musical that we deeply love. There are no easy explanations. [We are] heartened that we have been able to share this work with 140,000 theatergoers since our start last summer in Chicago and that Sting's herculean participation on stage since 9 Dec has lengthened our run, filled the theater with enthusiastic audiences and helped to burnish 'The Last Ship' in the canon of beautiful, original new musicals. Our ability to persevere has helped ensure a viable future for the show in licensing".

'The Last Ship' will close on 24 Jan. The producers are now hoping to secure licensing deals to help cover some of the losses.

The Prodigy to release music for bedtime
The Prodigy. The Prodge. The Prodders. The P Men. El Prodigio. Pro Diggity. The Pradajy. Prodigy, The. La Mirindaĵo. Mr Prodigy. Alf Six. Theeee Proooodiiiiiiggggyyyy. Liam And The Boys. The Propnadigicals. Whichever of these many commonly used names for them you prefer, they are back.

Their sixth studio album, the nocturnally-titled 'The Day Is My Enemy', will be released through their Cooking Vinyl imprint, Take Me To The Hospital, on 30 Mar. It features guest contributions from Sleaford Mods and Flux Pavilion.

"This is all well and good", I'm sure you're now screaming. "In fact, it's all well and fucking good", you add, swearing quite unnecessarily, "but is there a fucking teaser trailer?"

Oi! I told you to lay off the swearing. I've got a good mind not to let you have this teaser trailer at all. Maybe I'll give it to your sister instead, as she seems to be able to manage to behave herself. Yes, I think that's what I'll do. So this video here is for your sister's eyes only, and you can go to your room. Right now.

The Go! Team announce fourth album
Good news for fans of lively pick n mix pop, the first Go! Team album since 2011 will be upon us in March.

Speaking about the record, the man behind the project, Ian Parton, said: "I wanted to make an album driven by melody and song writing because catchiness is the hardest thing you can do. Brill building hooks but permeated with a kind of wobbly VHS feel".

'The Scene Between' will become available on 23 Mar via Memphis Industries. For now, get your wobbly VHS fix on the album's title track here.

Enter Shikari attack privatisation of the NHS on new single
Enter Shikari have revealed the second single from their forthcoming album, 'The Mindsweep'. Called 'Anaesthetist', the track sees the band launch an attack on the government's moves to dismantle the NHS.

Explains frontman Rou Reynolds: "We seem to have reached a stage of such capitalistic fervour, that we believe it acceptable to punish people for ill health. By charging for healthcare we act as if illness is nothing but one's own problem, but what is the purpose and advantage of 'civilisation' if it is not helping the most vulnerable within society?"

He adds: "The lottery of birth can offer us a wealth of bad luck when it comes to our health and the safety nets are being pulled in as the desire to boost profit overtakes the desire to help people".

Watch the video for 'Anaesthetist' here.

Nick Cave collaborates on skateboard design
What do you get for the man who has everything? A skateboard, apparently. Nick Cave has a skateboard now. And everything else, if the premise of this opening paragraph is to be believed. I'm not convinced, personally.

Anyway, that Nick Cave guy - the one from that film - has teamed up with Australian skateboard company Fast Times and American artist Chuck Sperry to create a new skateboard design. A 'deck', if you will. Which you will, because that's what it's called.

This particular deck is inspired by the song 'Nature Boy', from him and The Bad Seeds' 2004 album 'Abattoir Blues'. This song, it was mutually agreed by Cave and Fast Times, "best suited the Melbourne Skate Scene and vibe of Fast Times". These are things that Cave would be well aware of because he is apparently a "regular visitor" to the company's Melbourne store.

The theme is visualised with a painting of "one of Chuck's dames" who appears "tangled in her long golden locks wrapped in a psychedelic bed of flowers". There are some lyrics from 'Nature Boy' slapped on it too, just so you know what's going on.

Take a look at the finished product here. And if you don't fancy forking out for a bit of wood that you'll never use, there's also a t-shirt.

Now, imagine if we could finish this with a video of some people doing skateboarding tricks to a soundtrack of 'Nature Boy'. And now cease to imagine, because that very dream is a reality.
