Deezer buys Muve Music US-based Muve Music was brought under AT&T's ownership in 2013 when it purchased Leap Wireless, which in turn owned US mobile service Cricket Wireless, which in turn operated the streaming music set-up. Yeah, keep up with all that. For Deezer, a late entrant to the US streaming market despite its world domination strategy, the new deal delivers a sizable userbase over night (assuming they all stay), and its service will be promoted by Cricket to its mobile customers moving forward under the arrangement. Speaking about the purchase to Music Ally, Deezer's North American CEO Tyler Goldman said: "Muve has been one of the bright spots in the music subscription category in terms of getting very significant penetration, like what Spotify did in the Nordics and Deezer did in France. But Muve has been a little bit under the radar, especially outside the US. For a long time it was the largest subscription service in the US, now it's probably the second largest. So over the course of this year, that means Deezer will become one of the largest players in the US". Muve Music will cease to exist as a standalone service next month, but Deezer hopes to transfer users over to its own system with minimum hassle by ensuring their data and playlists move with them. Though Muve users will notice one big difference. Whereas they previously got their music streams bundled in with their Cricket Wireless account, Deezer will be an extra $6 a month after a 45 day free trial. And while that is cheaper than the going rate for on-demand streaming (ie $10 a month), it remains to be seen if the Muvers sign up, especially given the Cricket Wireless service arguably appealed to lower spending music fans than those who opted for the likes of Spotify and Beats Music. Though for the time being at least, Deezer + Muve does make the former "one of the largest" on-demand streamers Stateside, as Goldman claimed.
ID&T fires back at Disney in Tomorrowland trademark dispute But now Disney is shopping a movie called 'Tomorrowland: A World Beyond' around the world but, hey, ID&T just happens to own the Tomorrowland trademark in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg. So the dance music event makers are returning the favour and causing the Disney studios all kinds of issues regarding using that name for the film's release in those markets. Which is fun, isn't it? Perhaps Team ID&T could team up with Deadmau5 to launch a new event called Disney Lawyers, Go Fuck Yourselves.

Metropolis launches music publishing division Confirming the new strand to his company, which already provides production, mastering and artist services into addition to operating its West London recording studio complex, Metropolis CEO Ian Brenchley explained yesterday that "publishing was the final part of the transition of Metropolis into a full service music company". He went on: "Having worked with Ru on previous projects it seemed like the perfect fit when the opportunity came up to work together. As an executive across both the film and music landscapes, he really is without equal. We now have an unrivalled culture that spans music creation, recording, mixing, mastering, production and distribution". -------------------------------------------------- Cherry Red allies with sports group The independent record company is taking an equity stake in and joining the board of the Activate Group, which has two main businesses, a talent management agency with sport and entertainment clients, and a company that runs sports academy events for children. Under the deal, Cherry Red MD Adam Velasco and Chairman Iain McNay will become directors of Activate and bring music-expertise to the table. Specific objectives include expanding the music and entertainment side of the firm's talent agency, and launching a series of music-based summer camps based on Activate's existing sports academy model in 2016. Confirming the alliance, Velasco told reporters: "At Cherry Red we all love music and sport, so this partnership is the perfect combination for us. We know the Activate team well, having crossed paths several times before, so we are really looking forward to working together and helping build up the business". Elsewhere in Cherry Red news, the company has announced the appointment to its label business of John Reed, who previously worked at Sanctuary and who has been consulting for the independent for some time. He will become a full-time Operations Manager for the Cherry Red record company.

Brian Harvey presents findings of child abuse investigation to Labour MP Simon Danczuk Danczuk tweeted a picture of himself with Harvey yesterday, saying that they'd had an "important meeting" the previous day. Though at the time he did not specify what they had discussed, only saying that he appreciated the former popstar's help. Speaking to BuzzFeed later, the MP explained: "It's the first time I've met him. He came across to me as a really thoughtful person. The reason we were meeting up is to discuss some work he's done around child sex abuse. He was sharing the information that he had gathered". He continued: "He feels quite passionately about protecting children and really wants to make a contribution. We know that show business is an industry that's had a number of abusers within it. He's providing a number of leads that I'm keen to follow up and that's exactly what I'll do. I'm pleased he's done the work he's done. We had a good chat. I'd be happy and keen to meet him again". Last year, Danczuk published a report exposing child sex abuse by one of his predecessors as MP for Rochdale, the late Cyril Smith. He has also pushed for public enquiries into other historical allegations of child abuse within Westminster, and is compiling a report on the subject reaching beyond the alleged activities of MPs. The meeting between Dancuk and Harvey was apparently set up by the latter's local MP in Walthamstow, Stella Creasy. As you might remember, Harvey previously attempted to present his findings to David Cameron by turning up outside Downing Street and shouting. -------------------------------------------------- Sia apologises to those "triggered" by new video The singer tweeted: "I anticipated some 'paedophilia!!!' cries for this video. All I can say is Maddie and Shia are two of the only actors I felt could play these two warring 'Sia' self states. I apologise to those who feel triggered by [the] 'Elastic Heart' [video]. My intention was to create some emotional content, not to upset anybody". You can watch the definitely not offensive video here. -------------------------------------------------- DJ Premier's New York studio closes Having become known as the studio of choice for many hip hop artists in the 1990s, while named D&D Studios, Premier acquired and renamed the complex in 2003 after it was closed by its previous owners. Used by artists including Madonna, Jay-Z, Nas, Notorious BIG, KRS-One, Gang Starr and many others over the years, the closure comes after a change of ownership at the West 37th Street building which housed the studio. It will apparently now be turned into luxury flats. Of course. Premier has reportedly now relocated all the equipment formerly based there to Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens.
Years & Years are the Sound Of 2015, says the BBC So yes, having published its long list way back when in that crazy era of history which academics now call 2014, this week the Beeb has been announcing which of the fifteen buzzy new artists the pundits of Britain were buzzing about six weeks ago we should actually be paying attention to here in 2015. And in case you care, they are, in reverse order: George The Poet, Raury, Stormzy, James Bay and Years & Years. So that's exciting isn't it? Can we have a "woo" for the final five please? And a "woo, woo" for the overall winners? And a "woo, woo, woo" for me. Because I've been working really hard this week and almost certainly deserve it. Hey, here's a quote from Years & Years: "We can't really get our heads round it, [frontman] Olly [Alexander] nearly passed out when we found out, it was so surreal and emotional. It feels like it means we've got a real shot, which means the world to us. People are going to listen to what we're going to do, and we've just got to not muck it up. We've got to make the most of it and deliver". Too right. We'll have no mucking it up thank you very much. And now a quote from Huw Stephens, because why the hell not? "Years & Years have already and will continue to capture imaginations with their electronic melodies and lively on stage sets. They are a young band with loads of ideas and a clear vision of the music they want to make, and that will take them far this year". With all this buzz and support we're sure to be hearing from these guys for years and years to come. BOOM, Comedy Gold! Can we have another "woo, woo, woo" for me please? No? OK.
RCA's new PR, Steve Aoki's cake reduction, Charli XCX's Rita Ora collab and more in a cup that spilleth over Other notable announcements and developments today... Ash Collins has joined Sony Music UK's RCA publicity team as Senior Publicist. Collins has previously worked for Universal, Toast and 9PR. He was also apparently "integral to the launch of Jake Bugg", which seems like a weirdly insulting thing to say in a press release. Steve Aoki has made a "BIG ANNOUNCEMENT"; he is no longer going to throw cake at people at "most festivals". Instead he is going to be "keeping it exclusive for the die hard fans". For those die hard fans, he has also written a new track called 'Cake Face'. So that's something. Having got shot of that Scott Walker bloke, Sunn o))) have announced that they will be working on a new album all of their own "across the span of [2]015". Snoop Dogg (that's Dogg, not Lion) will release a new album, titled 'Bush', in March. It was entirely produced by Pharrell Williams, who says "Snoop's album is better than mine". Not sure that's setting the bar particularly high though. The UK release of Charli XCX's new album, 'Sucker', has apparently been delayed again. It'll now be out on 16 Feb. The move is seemingly to allow for the record to be pre-empted by a new version of 'Doing It' with added Rita Ora vocals, which is released as a single on 8 Feb. Listen here. Ghostpoet is very good, isn't he? I bet you'd like to hear another album of his work, wouldn't you? Maybe recorded with a live band. Yeah? Well, 'Shedding Skin' will be out on 2 Mar. Here's a track from it, 'Off Peak Dreams'. Approved song-singing man Alex Burey has shared the lead single from his forthcoming debut EP, 'Inside World'. It's called 'The Intimidator' and you can listen to it here. Burey will also be playing live at St Pancras Old Church on 21 Jan, which you should probably make a note of somewhere. Worriedaboutsatan will return with a new album, 'Even Temper', on 16 Mar. It's their first album since 2009, the duo having been concentrating on their Ghosting Season alter-ego of late. Girl Band have been forced to cancel their upcoming New York shows due to issues securing US visas. They are "properly bummed out about this". As should everyone in New York be. Hey, you remember when we said it seemed like a pretty safe bet that rumours of an Iggy Azalea collaboration appearing on the new Shakira album were true? Apparently it was not. Also, yesterday we mentioned rumours that Katy Perry is working on a "a visual or a lyric related jab" at Taylor Swift as part of her Superbowl performance next month. Well the rumour now is that it'll be a whole song called 'She's So Creepy'. Yay rumours!
CMU Beef Of The Week #237: Alcopop! Records v UKIP "We were first alerted to it when a Noisey journo tweeted that the domain was down and available", Clothier told CMU. "We checked on GoDaddy, it seemed to be available for £200, so we paid - got the receipt and confirmation of purchase, tweeted it and the internet went nuts!" "Initially I had a vague plan to fill the site with a load of unicorn gifs, so that everyone could see something lovely rather than the right-wing nonsense that UKIP spout", he added. "But as the tweets rumbled in it became clear that their were better options - either redirecting to a wonderful charity, or forming the United Kingdom Indie Parties Party, which would take something of an Andrew WK style approach to life". Which sounds like a brilliant idea for all of us, but such a development would have been quite a knock for UKIP, especially in an election year. Their policies maybe firmly stuck in the distant past, but even Nigel Farage and co presumably recognise the need for a website in this here modern age. So they would surely have been relieved when it turned out that their domain was not actually available to third parties after all. Not long after Clothier's domain purchase tweet, an update on Alcopop's Facebook page informed the world that, while GoDaddy had confirmed the purchase of ukip.org and taken the label's money, the URL seemed to be back or still with the political party anyway. What exactly happened still isn't entirely clear. GoDaddy's PR rep passed us on to a spokesperson for the company through which the domain was originally registered, 123-reg, who said: "UKIP has a long term registration with 123-Reg services. Due to a technical issue on our customer's side www.ukip.org was unavailable yesterday morning. Using our expertise we helped UKIP to restore its website facilities". Blame firmly placed on UKIP then, so we went and asked the party's head office for comment, where we were told: "You're asking the wrong office. We have no involvement with the website and cannot help. All I can tell you is that it went down for a few hours and is now up and running again". I reserve the right to take back my previous comment about UKIP understanding the importance of a website. According to Clothier, the explanation he received from GoDaddy was that "it was something to do with a third party they represented selling the site when they shouldn't or something along those lines". On his motivation for attempting to purchase the domain name, Clothier explained: "Not only do I detest UKIP and what they stand for, I'm also genuinely scared of them - because they present a much more palatable media picture than previous right-wing dickheads ever did. The BNP for instance were terrible human beings, but Nick Griffin was also an absolute joke who continually shot himself in the foot". "Farage has been named Briton Of The Year by The Times", he continued. "Briton of the fucking year! This absolutely terrifies me, and while we wouldn't consider ourselves much of a political label, I think we all have the duty of making sure that this UKIP threat doesn't come to pass/flourish in this election. That's why spending the morning reminding people that UKIP are unable to run a website, let alone the country was a positive thing... even if we didn't end up with the website itself".
