This information has recently been updated, and is now available.

VHP’s newest blog is the first in a series exploring the many different places that VHP stories come from. Today we turn our sights inward to explore stories of veterans living and serving in Washington, D.C., the home of the Library of Congress and the Veterans History Project, while at the same time reaching out to give readers a chance to choose the next location in the series. Be sure to participate in the comments and share your hometown stories and VHP may feature your city in an upcoming blog post.

Washington, D.C. has been a military hub ever since it was first created on the banks of the Potomac and Anacostia Rivers, so it is no surprise that there is a wealth of memories centering around its wide avenues and stately buildings.

World War II brought thousands of men and women to the nation’s capital for the first time, many of whom were excited to live in such a bustling city despite the war going on. Men and women like Norton Richardson and Ann Madeira, two veterans who recount their memories of work and play in Washington, D.C. in this post by VHP reference Specialist Megan Harris.

The Mission of the Veterans History Project of the Library of Congress American Folklife Center is to collect, preserve and make accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans so that future generations may hear directly from veterans and better understand the realities of war.
