Reminder: Kluge Center, Veterans History Project and Prints & Photographs Co-Host “ART FROM WAR” Lecture, Jan. 22—Dispatch January 20, 2015

You are subscribed to News from the John W. Kluge Center for Library of Congress. This information has recently been updated, and is now available.

On Thursday, January 22nd at 4 p.m., Larson Fellow Tara Tappert will examine the history of how and why medical institutions and social organizations embraced arts and crafts making as a healing process for war trauma.

Veterans from the current wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have found the arts as an outlet for making sense of their war experiences. Military hospitals also use the arts as a therapeutic treatment for those wounded in combat. Tappert will delineate how the two distinctly different artistic approaches to the experiences of war trauma–documentation and restoration–can be traced to the devastations of the First World War. During and after WWI, veterans throughout the world made artwork that conveyed their war experiences, while hospitals, social agencies, and individuals used the arts to help the crippled and disabled find ways to face the future–through mask making, plastic surgery, and occupational therapy.

Tappert is an independent scholar who has spent the past twelve months as a David B. Larson Fellow in Health & Spirituality at The John W. Kluge Center at the Library of Congress. The talk is co-sponsored by the Library’s Veterans History Project and the Prints and Photographs Division. A display of items from both collections will accompany the lecture.
