Quick Tip

Bob writes:

I have Kubuntu 6.06 LTS: The Dapper Drake Release, installed on my desk top computer – how can I upgrade to a more current version of Linux. Will you be offering free Linux CD's soon? Thanks.

kubuntu

Bob, you wouldn't find a Linux upgrade from us or any business. To find the most current version of Kubuntu, you would need to go to the site for Kubuntu - www.kubuntu.org.

The same holds true for any home version of Linux – whether it be Ubuntu, Mint or one of the many other flavors of Linux, you'll need to go to the official site for that version of Linux.

Those sites are also where you'll find answers to frequently asked questions about your OS and forums where you can find support from other users.

Here are some links to the sites for some popular flavors of Linux:

Ubuntu – www.ubuntu.com

Linux Mint – www.linuxmint.com

Fedora – getfedora.org

Puppy – puppylinux.org

Plus this link to a page that will take you to the most popular Ubuntu flavors like Kubuntu & Lubuntu – www.ubuntu.com/about/about-ubuntu/flavours.

Installer Has Insufficent Privileges Skype Error

In the last few years, there has been some bug in Skype or in your system that disallows you from either updating Skype or installing Skype. It says, "The installer has insufficient privileges to access this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Skype. The installation cannot continue. Log on as administrator or contact your system administrator." And that's the end of your installation because logging on as administrator doesn't help either. With Skype being the lifeblood of long-distance communication, this delay will not do.

Here are a few ways to get this problem out of the way.

1. Uninstall Skype using the free Iobit Uninstaller — it's an advanced uninstaller that not only removes the program but also erases any leftovers of the programme with advanced scanning and file shredding.

2. If this problem of uninstalling using Iobit and installing Skype again doesn't solve your problem, then do this. Download the free Microsoft FixIt and you should not have any Skype-related problem of updating or any problem you are facing with the audio and webcam issues.

There are other Skype-related issuesthat can also be fixed by this free download, including the following scenarios:

* One or more audio services, such as the Windows Audio service, are not running. In this situation, you receive an "audio service is not running" error message.
* Your sound and audio devices are disabled in Windows.

* The audio is muted on your device.

* Your computer or laptop speaker volume is very low because the volume of your audio device is set too low.

* Your installed audio device is not set as the default audio and playback device.

* Your audio device is not plugged in.

* You receive a "There might be a problem with your audio device" error message.

* Because of HDMI audio problems, you hear no sound through an HDMI connection.

* Windows Update is not configured to download and install updated audio drivers for your sound card.

* Skype does not detect a camera.

* Video crashes when you use a webcam.

3. There are cases where you can log into the existing Skype software after running FixIt. But once you hit the 'update' button of Skype, the problem is back to square one. The way out is to not log into right away after running FixIt. Instead, you should run FixIt, and use Iobit Uninstaller to uninstall Skype. Make sure, you run 'Powerful Scanning' after the uninstall to remove all traces of the Skype program. Once this is done, go to the Skype site and download the latest software for Windows, Mac or Linux. Don't install from the Skype executable file already downloaded by you earlier. It could be infected too; so it's best to do a fresh download and install the all-new Skype version. It will install without giving you the error message of "insufficient privileges".

Happy chatting and tele-conferencing!

eBooks 101 - Part 2 - Where To Get eBooks

In part 1 of this article, I started to answer some questions from Lynn. She received Amazon eBooks as a Christmas gift and wants to know more about how they work. We've already looked at what an eReader is. In part 2, we'll answer more of Lynn's question:

I have been given the gift of several electronic Amazon books by young relatives for Christmas. They intend for me to read them on the Android tablet I received for my birthday in October. I can read e-mail, go to the Internet and play the occasional game on this tablet, but I am afraid I am puzzled by the notion of electronic books. I have to admit that my first thought was to perhaps print these books from my computer, but I read your article about the cost and inconvenience of printing an entire book. Can you explain just how these books work and also what you would consider the advantages and disadvantages of this type of item to be compared to the old-fashioned book. Also, it was necessary to donate quite a lot of older books to charity when I downsized from a larger home to a smaller condominium and my nephew said it might be possible to reacquire many of these books for free in an electronic format. He offered to instruct me on his next visit, but I would prefer to do it myself if I can.

To read books eBooks on your tablet, you'll need an app. Since you want to read books from Amazon, you'll need the Kindle app. You can find that for free in the Google Play Store. Once you hit install it should install in less than a minute.

kindleappcrop

The Kindle app is also available for iPad, Windows tablets and smartphones.

And that brings up an important thing about eBooks. Amazon books need to be read either on a Kindle device or with the Amazon app. Barnes & Noble Nook books need to be read on a Nook or with the Nook app. Like the Kindle app, you'll find it in the app store for your device. Amazon uses a proprietary format for its eBook files. While Barnes & Noble's Nook & Apple iBooks both use the EPUB format that can be read only many devices, they also have something extra on the files called DRM. (digital rights management.) This prevents the books from being read on anything but the bookseller's preferred device unless you get into the process of removing the DRM, which can be complicated and is technically a violation of your purchase agreement.

DRM also means you just can't make a copy of an...

More Banks Bail On XP

More and more banks are saying goodbye to Internet Explorer 8 running on Windows XP. Banks like Charlotte State Bank & Trust have issued warnings to customer saying users must switch to Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox in order to continue online banking.

xpbankwarning

Adirondack Bank posted a list of certified Operating Systems including Windows 7, 8 & 8.1. The bank also supports Vista and Mac OS 10.7, 10.8 & 10.9 . Windows XP and Mac OS 10.6 are not supported. Certified browsers are IE 9, 10 & 11 32 bit, with IE 9, 10 & 11 64 bit and the current versions of Chrome & Firefox listed as supported.

supportedopsys

Microsoft ended security support for XP last April, so even with the switch to Chrome or Firefox, banking on an XP computer is risky. Hackers know the OS is unprotected and more threats to XP are discovered all of the time.

According to security experts Kaspersky, unpatched flaws for the 14-year-old system are growing every month. Businesses like banks are the most likely victims of these attacks, but no one running XP is safe. Kaspersky points out that XP systems have "frail security" and are "incredibly vulnerable."

Many businesses have dragged their feet on updating and securing their systems. Many hospital and doctor's offices are running on outdated XP machines leaving your payment information, SSN, name, address, family history and medical records vulnerable to hackers. That kind of information is an identify thief's dream. Not only do they have enough information to successfully impersonate you, they also have the kind of vital details that make it easier to guess passwords.

xp_desktop

Anchorage Community Mental Health Services was fined $150,000 for a data breach by the government. In that settlement, the Office for Civil Rights said that the clinic violated HIPAA regulations by not implementing a secure operating system. HIPPA regulations require medical providers to implement current security patches on systems and there are no security patches to apply to XP systems.

Despite having several years advance warning that security support was ending, many businesses put off the switch because of cost or because software they were running would only work with XP. Patching vulnerabilities on a system requires a knowledge of that operating system at the most basic level. Only Microsoft has that access and knowledge. They have security experts working all the time to fix flaws in the operating systems they support and they share those patches with third-party security companies like Kaspersky and Norton. But without the access that Microsoft has to XP at the most basic level, it's impossible for any third-party company to permanently patch security flaws in XP.

Why did Microsoft end security support for XP?

One More Big Deal

If you have a smartphone or a tablet, then you probably have an Android device. Let's face it - Android is everywhere - and sooner or later you'll want to stop struggling and get the most out of yours!

But the problem is... it's NOTHING like what we used before!

Apps? Widgets? Touchscreen gestures? It's all new, it's all different, and there are NO good guides out there that give you a proper rundown on how to use these things!

It's not like you can just ignore them, either.

So, with that said... if you're going to be using Android, you might as well know how to use it properly!

That's what this Android guide is for!

Our writers are constantly answering questions about how to their WiFi working, or how to download apps, or even just "how do I turn this thing on?!"

We took the problem head on: we gathered all the resources we could, had every tech genius in the office collaborate, and even recorded some in-depth video informationals so we could put together this guide!

This is quite simply the most thorough, most detailed, easiest-to-understand guide to Android you'll EVER find!

While it's focused on tablets, the Android operating system is almost identical for smart phones too... so 99% of the information here is applicable to both!

I wish I could tell you EVERYTHING that's in this guide... but there's too much to pack into one e-mail!

After all, the guide is over 130 pages long, with videos and graphics that make sure you know EXACTLY what we're talking about!

This is 15 chapters of chock full of the critical information you've been dying to know!

Here's a rundown of all the chapters, just so you can get an idea of how thorough this guide really is:

Welcome to Android
Getting Started With Gestures
The Homescreen
Android Settings
The File Manager
Apps & Widgets
Customize Your Homescreen
eReaders & eBooks
Movies & Music
Pictures & Videos
Office Apps, Printing, & Cloud Storage
Using The Calendar To Manage Your Life
Video & Voice Calls
Android Security
The Best Apps For Games, Social Media, News & More

By the end of this guide, you WILL know how to use your Android device.

You WILL be able to answer any questions your family and friends have.

And most importantly... you will NOT have to deal with the frustration of awkwardly pressing buttons and apps until your tablet or phone does what you want it to.

While I can't go into detail about everything this guide has (it's just so much information) but I can give you a sneak peek at just what you'll be finding out!

First off...

There's a whole introduction to just exactly what Android is.

There are a LOT of misconceptions out there as to what an Android tablet or phone is, what its relation to Windows or Mac is (none at all!) or how you can use it with the Internet!

You might learn a thing or two you didn't know before you even get into the meat and potatoes of this guide!

For instance, what do you need to get online wirelessly with your tablet? Do you know EVERY piece of equipment used?

You will once you see the quick video introduction!

But that's just the beginning (literally!)

How about USING your tablet or phone?

Those things don't come with a mouse, and most of them don't come with a keyboard! So how exactly do you type? How do you select or click stuff?

We have that information too!

Chapter 2 goes DIRECTLY into gestures and using your tablet! You'll find out the difference between swiping, pinching, tapping, and holding. Even people who have owned Android devices for a while are going to discover new things!

One good example is the "hold" menu. A LOT of people actually don't know about that one - and it can open up a lot of new features or options for using apps, pictures, or music!

And remember - when this guide is explaining these features, it's in clear & concise language. You will NEVER be confused by the terminology used, and you definitely won't feel like you have to go back and repeat sections.

It's so simple you'll get it all the first time you see, read, or watch it!

Of course, you can't forget about apps either!

What is an app?

Where do you find them?

How do you download them?

Which app is the one you ACTUALLY want?

Okay, you got it downloaded... how do you USE it?

If you think we forgot about apps in this comprehensive guide, you're nuts!

They're one of the most important aspects of the Android operating systems, and we go into full detail.

And my guide doesn't stop there!

Once you have your apps and widgets... maybe you want to make sure it's all on your homescreen right?

You're going to love the chapters on the homescreen!

We start off by giving you in-depth information on everything that goes on the homescreen...

THEN I SHOW YOU HOW TO CUSTOMIZE IT!

You'll know how to get your e-mail, contacts, even up-to-date weather RIGHT ON YOUR HOMESCREEN!

This is the screen you see the MOMENT you turn your device on every time!

So it's important to make sure that it has all the stuff you need (and none of the junk you don't!)

You can get all SORTS of widgets or apps on here...

You can even change the background!

If you don't know how to customize it, you might be losing important apps to second or third pages, which makes you have to swipe to the side EVERY time you just want to look at your e-mail!

If you have an Android phone or tablet, it's a guarantee you have a camera built into it.

Nowadays, it's almost pointless to have point & shoot cameras... because the ones in our Android devices is SO good!

This guide shows you how to operate the camera, switch between front & back cameras, and even activate your video recording!

Don't let a SINGLE feature of your Android device go to waste!

Use this guide to make sure you're getting ALL the benefits of what has to be the most significant technology this century so far!

Whenever you use technology (especially something with your e-mail, passwords, WiFi connections...) you NEED to stay secure!

Not only do we show you the must-have security app for Android (the that ALL the Android users in my office use) I even show you some things that even advanced Android users don't always pay attention to: permissions!

What are permissions? Well, just like the name implies, they're the things that your apps want access to before they operate...

With Android 101, you can download your apps knowing exactly what they'll do, exactly what they'll need, and knowing you didn't pickup one of the dreaded "fake apps" that are growing more and more popular from malware creators!

To learn more, you simply HAVE to check out the guide!

WHEW!

I feel like I've been going on and on forever!

Take it from me - Android is here to stay. As popular as Windows is for computers, Android is the same for tablets and smartphones.

Whether you've had Android devices for a while, or at planning on taking the leap soon... PLEASE grab a copy of this guide!

You won't find another guide out there that's both thorough and concise like this one.

Watchful Winter Deer

The forecast was calling for an early season snow and with the temps hovering around freezing, I knew the snow was going to stick to everything in sight. Seemed like a good reason to get out to my local park! Now, I'm the first to admit the deer are fairly tame in this area and with the large number roaming the park, I knew it wasn't going to be too terribly difficult to locate a subject or two. Sure enough…(More)
