Announcements

I hope you can read this quick!

They say the early bird catches the worm, and I caught one CRAZY worm today!

Browsing through a supplier's list, I came across what I thought must've been a typo: Emtec 16GB flash drives at a deal so low it makes me look sane!

But it wasn't a mistake, so I did everything in my power to grab as many as possible before someone else saw them!

That means two things:

1. You can grab yourself one of these AWESOME flash drives for only $9.97!

That's practically just 50 cents per gigabyte.

That's a LOT of stuff, right?

But then there's the other part...

2. These are NOT going to last long.

So how long is not long?

If I had to guess, I'd say if you expect these to be here through tomorrow, you might be too optimistic!

I HATE when people miss out on these deals! There's nothing worse than finding a jaw-dropper like this, only to realize some people won't get them because we sold out in just a handful of hours...

So PLEASE! Make sure you get to the store and grab one of these!

If you own a computer, you WILL need a flash drive sooner or later! And you won't find a 16GB one for just $9.97 anywhere else!

Computers 101

New Year's PC Cleanup - Part 3

In Part 1 and Part 2, we discussed how you can delete files and clean up your PC. In this final part, we'll discuss backing up and imaging your hard drive.

Another important housekeeping step I'd recommend is to first backup and then image your computer. We did discuss the difference in this article. We also explained how to backup to an external hard drive. This would also be the same process as backing up to a flash drive, but the flash drive must be big enough to store your backup.

When you perform a backup, you really are backing up anything that was "user created." That means all the documents, pictures, music, and other files created or edited by you or anyone using your computer. There are free programs out there to do this, but Windows also has built in backup software as explained in the article above. However, you must have an external drive to set these backups up, either a flash drive or external hard drive or network drive.

You can customize Windows backup as well, and change how often it backs up, from every 10 minutes to daily, and you can set it to exclude certain folders. After you've backed up, you can then restore files individually or whole folders if necessary.

backupadvanced

An image is different. This creates an exact image of your computer in case of a complete reinstall. It will restore your computer, programs and all, back to a specific moment in time, but you cannot retrieve single files or folders. It's an all or nothing deal.

To set up a System Image using Windows built-in backup tools, in Windows 7, type Backup and Restore in the start menu. On the left, click Create a System Image and follow the step. In Windows 8, you have to search for File History. You also must have an external drive plugged in. Once you do, look on the bottom left for System Image Backup.

backupimage

Follow the steps to save your image. Please keep in mind your drive must be formatted to us NTFS filing system, so you may need to reformat the drive for that. Also bear in mind that an image file is quite large, typically about as large as all the used space on the drive you are imaging, so it most likely will not fit on a flash drive. You could save it to a DVD, but would likely need more than 1 DVD for the whole image, unless you compress it. There are many free imaging software options other than the included Windows imaging tools as well, but for basic images, Windows works pretty well.

The final housekeeping recommendation is to clean out the vents. A computer needs constant air flow or it could over heat and and cause poor performance or even failure. Dust and dirt build up can reduce the ability of the computer to cool itself. Get yourself a canister of compressed air and gently spray out the vents, ports, fans, and any other areas where dust could build up. If you are computer savvy and comfortable, you can even open up your desktop computer case and spray out the inside, being careful not to touch any of the components. However, this is ONLY recommended if you know what you are doing, as opening up a computer could cause damage to any of the internal components of the computer if handled improperly.

On The Move

Daniel asks:

How do I insert an image in a message using the Outlook Mobile app?

The Outlook Mobile app is the mobile version of Outlook.com. If you tried to access Outlook.com e-mail via a browser on your phone or tablet, it wouldn't work very well. Mobile apps are optimized to run well with phones and tablets.

To attach a photo to a new message in the Outlook app, you'll need to tap the little paperclip icon.

You'll have the choice between selecting from your documents (don't worry, that includes photos) or a memory card if you have one in your device.

From The Archives

Jim from USA writes:

Is their a difference between hibernation and sleep?

Sleep and hibernation do a very similar thing, but in different ways. Both keep all of your applications and windows saved and allow you to resume back to the point you were at before hitting sleep/hibernate, but one is designed for short breaks and one for longer breaks.

Sleep or hibernate

Sleep, (also called Suspend) saves the information into your computer's RAM and uses a small amount of power to keep the ramRAM and some system components active to allow you to quickly resume where you were.

Hibernate, on the other hand...

Amanda's Coolsite

Graffiti General

To view today's site, you'll need to use Google Chrome, because it's an awesome Chrome experiment! This time you'll plunge into an abandoned building near Paris and explore the countless works of graffiti it hosts.

After the intro plays or you skip it, you'll have the option of choosing between the Standard or HD experience. I checked both out, and definitely recommend the Standard if you are on a slower connection. The HD is awesome, but the Standard loads quicker.

Once you take your pick you'll explore the building with your mouse, and the left side menu. You can use the mouse to explore the building like you would any panorama, click on the i buttons to get more information about a particular piece of graffiti. You can use the left side menu to switch floors under the map section, and that's about all the instructions you need!

Just start exploring the different works all around the building! I thought this was a really cool experience. I hope you will too!

One More Big Deal

I'm the first to admit that I don't sew much. So, when we got a sample of this great little product into the office, I handed it to a gal who is an avid sewer and crafter and said, "Check this little thingy out and let me know what you think."

She REFUSED to give it back when the test was over, and here's why:

It makes sewing so much simpler! Even non-sewers know that threading a needle can be almost impossible sometimes.

Needle threaders are handy little devices that help you pull the thread through the eye of a needle. But sometimes it is so hard to see the thread and the eyes of the needle! This threader has a super- bright LED to shed some light on the situation. It's a heck of a lot easier to thread a needle when you can see what you're doing.

The other problem with threaders is that they are usually pretty small and easy to lose. Not this one! It has a handy clip that can go on your keychain, sewing basket or even a belt loop.

Belt loop? You ask. Yep, or your back pack, because this also works for threading fishing line. And when you're trying to thread a hook just before dawn, you need some light.

My sewing sources tell me that's easy for threaders to get bent in a sewing kit. That's why this one has a handy protective cover to protect the threader and the light. How amazing is that for less than $1?

It was holiday time when we tested this out and my tester said it not only helped with mending tasks at home, but also with making popcorn strings and other craft projects.

Then she took it with her when she was working backstage at a big Christmas pageant, taking care of missing buttons and broken straps on costumes.

That meant switching out the thread colors to match the costumes, which could have been a nightmare in the dark backstage area, but the bright light on the threader saved the day. The show must go on!

They seriously need to find a way to add this to a Swiss Army Knife! And don't worry, batteries are included, so you can use this right out the package.

The bright, white LED light isn't just for threading needles. Use it whenever you need a light!

And you can't beat the price of only $0.97 ! You NEED at least one of these on hand. Even if you don't sew often, one time or another you'll at least need to reattach a button and this makes it so much easier. And the limited supply won't last long at this price. Watchful Winter Deer

The forecast was calling for an early season snow and with the temps hovering around freezing, I knew the snow was going to stick to everything in sight. Seemed like a good reason to get out to my local park! Now, I'm the first to admit the deer are fairly tame in this area and with the large number roaming the park, I knew it wasn't going to be too terribly difficult to locate a subject or two. Sure enough…(More)

Hovering Egret

Hocking Hills Cascading Stream

This was taken one misty morning in Hocking Hills State Park. We were hiking through the Old Man's Cave area and couldn't help but notice the creek that flowed through the gorge looked especially spectacular this particular AM. So, I scampered over some rocks and down to the best part of the cascades. Had to be careful with this one. I was shooting just upstream from a waterfall and...(More)
