Quick Tip

Geoff from Portsmouth asks:

What are the most popular web browsers? Does anyone really use Internet Explorer these days? I prefer Firefox myself, with Chrome a distant second. How many people have switched?

firefox-logo-black-370x229

Let's go to the numbers for 2014 courtesy of NetMarketShare. According to their numbers, Internet Explorer was the browser used by 58.94% of people who accessed the Internet from a desktop That's up slightly from 58.21% of users in January of 2014.

Chrome was used by 20.57% of users, a big jump from 16.34% of users back at the start of the year. Chrome's gain seem to have come from Firefox's loss. Firefox started the year ahead of Chrome as the #2 browser and finished in 3rd place.

Firefox is used by only 13.26% of users, down from 18.02% at the start of 2014. Firefox launched a fundraising drive recently asking user to contribute in order to "build an Internet that puts the public good over profit."

Safari is the preferred browser for 5.9% of desktop users, followed by Opera at less than 1%. Other browsers combined account for less than .5% of browsers.

Computers 101

Ubuntu Tips & Tricks

Since many of us Ubuntu users, have chosen the LTS (Long Time Support) 12.04 version to run on our computers, I have some hints about customizing it and installing what I consider must-have software for that flavor of Ubuntu.

1. Update

Right after Ubuntu 12.04 installation is complete your system will restart. Before anything else, download and install the existing updates.

2. Additional drivers

Reboot the system after all updates are installed. Normally, the next step is to look for and install the missing device drivers. For this, click on your dashboard and type "drivers". Then click the application icon.

Select the missing driver then click the "Activate" button.

Repeat the action for each missing driver and then reboot the system in order to let Ubuntu use them.

3. Appearance

Changing the desktop background and icon size it's easy to be done by right-clicking an empty spot from your workspace and choosing the option "Change Desktop Background". The following window appears.

To modify the Launcher's icons size, just drag the cursor until you are satisfied with the result. Click one of the predefined wallpapers to change your desktop background. If you want more options, you may use Ubuntu Tweak application. To install it, pressing Ctrl+Alt+T and type the following commands in the Terminal window:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:tualatrix/ppa

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install ubuntu-tweak

Now, let's change the login windows' background. Go to dashboard and type "Tweak". Click the application to launch it.

Click the "Unlock" button to give the application root privileges. You will be asked for your login password. Then, click the "Set the same background as the current desktop background" button.

That's it! Next time you login, you will see the result.

But there is more to be done with Ubuntu Tweak. Play around! You may change the fonts, login settings and window behavior. Also, you can choose another theme.

4. Recommended applications

a) VLC Media Player. In my opinion is the best multimedia player out there. Best of all, is free. It has all the needed codecs, is lightweight and can even play ISO images.

To install it, type the following command in the Terminal window:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:videolan/stable-daily

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install vlc

b) Google Chrome. Although Chromium is a Linux targeted browser from Google, Chrome remains my great love. It's faster than Firefox, the installation package already contains Flash Player and Facebook games work better in Google Chrome. Download it from here, then execute it with double-click.

c) Pinta and Gimp. For image editing choose Pinta. It's fast and simple and offers 99% of the tools you need. If you want more, like a free Photoshop alternative, than get Gimp, a complex and complete, yet free software.

To install Pinta, type the following in the Terminal window:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:pinta-maintainers/pinta-stable

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install pinta

To install Gimp, download it from here. Once the download finishes, double-click the file to launch the installation and follow the instructions.

d) TV-MAXE. You like watching TV? Me too, that is why I use TV-Maxe, a free streaming application which allows me to watch and record my favorites shows and movies.

To install it, open the Terminal window and type the following:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:venerix/blug

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get install tv-maxe

There are many applications for Ubuntu that you could like. I picked the above ones because I believe they are the best and I use them daily.

eBooks 101 - Part 3 - Pros & Cons

Lynn wrote with questions about how eBooks work and I did my best to answer them in part 1 and part 2 of this series. She also wanted to know what I thought the pros and cons of eBooks versus physical books are. I'll go over my list, but feel free to add your comments on what you like and don't like about eBooks.

I want to start off by saying that I don't feel physical books and eBooks are in competition with each other. I love both of them and I don't see why purchasing one would ever exclude you from purchasing and enjoying the other.

eBook Pros

Space saving- You can put thousands of eBooks on an eReader or tablet. You don't actually need to keep your entire library on the device. Most of your books will stay in the cloud and only be downloaded to the device as needed. You can have an unlimited number of books without running out of space, developing dust mites or running the risk of the crew of a show called "Hoarders" turning up your doorstep. When not connected to the Internet, you'll only be able to read the books downloaded to your device. So if you plan to be away from WiFi, make sure you have what you want to read on the tablet.

kindle

Portability – An eReader or smaller tablet is much lighter than a hardback book and certainly much lighter than carrying around multiple books and magazines. If you're planning on taking a long flight or going on vacation, you can load it up with lots of reading material. I envy the students of today packing one tablet instead of 10 books in a bag.

Use on multiple devices – You can install a Kindle app on a tablet, smartphone and your computer. That enables you to read your book, no matter which device you happen to be using. The book will sync across devices. If you open it up on your smartphone, it will be exactly where you left off on the tablet.

Accessibility Options – eReaders and reader apps usually allow you to adjust the size and style of text and the brightness of the screen for ease of reading. You can also often choose to have the book read aloud to you.

sizebrightness

Cost – eBooks can often times (but not always) be less expensive than physical copies of books. There are a variety of free and low cost eBooks available, but you will pay more for major releases and best-sellers...

From XP To 8 Step-By-Step

Ready to make the switch from XP to Windows 8? I'm here to walk you through the process step-by-step.

Before trying to upgrade your XP computer to Windows 8, be certain you run the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant. Notice, if you are using XP, you must run the Windows 8 Assistant, not the 8.1. (If you are thinking about upgrading XP to 7, click here for the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor.) Also, please note the Windows 8 System Requirements to see if your computer meets these basics. You can find out the Processor and RAM details on your XP machine by going to the Start menu, right click on My Computer, and click Properties.

Once the Windows 8 Assistant has downloaded, it will automatically scan for compatibility of programs, devices, and hardware with Windows 8. Make sure you have all printers and other devices you use plugged in before running the assistant. When the scan is completed, it will pop up a screen with details of the scan and list programs that are compatible or ones that may require attention.Click on See Compatibility Details to see a list of any items that may need reviewed.

Pay close attention to any issues in the list at the top, as some of these could indicate that your computer can't handle Windows 8. Pay special attention if it lists anything like a graphics card or processor that is not compatible.

If nothing seems to be a major issue, then you can proceed...

Mom Meet Mom

One thing I've noticed among my friends who have recently become moms is that they often look for other moms that they can socialize with, and as their kids are getting older arrange play dates and such with. One of my best friends from high school ended up having twins which was a unique experience that led her to seek out other moms of twins.

I've loved watching the way she found a new community to participate in, and how all those lovely women support each other. So when, Mom Meet Mom came across my path I sent it to her immediately. She loved it, so I thought it would be a great site to share with all of you.

When you arrive at the site I suggest scrolling down the main page. They provide a lot of information about how the site works, and what they aim to do with it. If you want even more information check out the About section where you can learn more about the site's founders and their goals for it.

The FAQ is also a great section to check out to get a feel for whether or not the site fits your needs, parenting, and even lifestyle.

With all that said, how Mom Meet Mom works is by comparing a certain set of criteria in order to match you up with other local moms based on your interests, schedules, families, personalities, and social preferences. They also offer the Socials section where Moms can plan parties with other moms in their local area, and an active Forum section where you can interact with other moms online.

This site looks like a great way to meet other moms in your local area and build a community together!

One More Big Deal

I'm the first to admit that I don't sew much. So, when we got a sample of this great little product into the office, I handed it to a gal who is an avid sewer and crafter and said, "Check this little thingy out and let me know what you think."

She REFUSED to give it back when the test was over, and here's why:

It makes sewing so much simpler! Even non-sewers know that threading a needle can be almost impossible sometimes.

Needle threaders are handy little devices that help you pull the thread through the eye of a needle. But sometimes it is so hard to see the thread and the eyes of the needle! This threader has a super- bright LED to shed some light on the situation. It's a heck of a lot easier to thread a needle when you can see what you're doing.

The other problem with threaders is that they are usually pretty small and easy to lose. Not this one! It has a handy clip that can go on your keychain, sewing basket or even a belt loop.

Belt loop? You ask. Yep, or your back pack, because this also works for threading fishing line. And when you're trying to thread a hook just before dawn, you need some light.

My sewing sources tell me that's easy for threaders to get bent in a sewing kit. That's why this one has a handy protective cover to protect the threader and the light. How amazing is that for less than $1?

It was holiday time when we tested this out and my tester said it not only helped with mending tasks at home, but also with making popcorn strings and other craft projects.

Then she took it with her when she was working backstage at a big Christmas pageant, taking care of missing buttons and broken straps on costumes.

That meant switching out the thread colors to match the costumes, which could have been a nightmare in the dark backstage area, but the bright light on the threader saved the day. The show must go on!

They seriously need to find a way to add this to a Swiss Army Knife! And don't worry, batteries are included, so you can use this right out the package.

The bright, white LED light isn't just for threading needles. Use it whenever you need a light!

And you can't beat the price of only $0.97 ! You NEED at least one of these on hand. Even if you don't sew often, one time or another you'll at least need to reattach a button and this makes it so much easier. And the limited supply won't last long at this price. Click the store link below to add it to your cart ASAP!

Watchful Winter Deer

The forecast was calling for an early season snow and with the temps hovering around freezing, I knew the snow was going to stick to everything in sight. Seemed like a good reason to get out to my local park! Now, I'm the first to admit the deer are fairly tame in this area and with the large number roaming the park, I knew it wasn't going to be too terribly difficult to locate a subject or two. Sure enough…(More)

There wasn't too much going on and I knew the light was less than a half an hour from turning too harsh to work with anyway. This was taken one misty morning in Hocking Hills State Park. We were hiking through the Old Man's Cave area and couldn't help but notice the creek that flowed through the gorge looked especially spectacular this particular AM.
