Quick Tip

Connie from Michigan writes:

I just bought a new laptop with windows 7 Professional. How do I find windows mail? I like it and would very much like to have it on the new computer.

Fortunately Connie, it's very easy to find Windows Live Mail. It's available as part of Windows Essentials along with several other helpful programs. Click here to read an article about how to get Windows Essentials.

Many Windows 8 and 8.1 users also prefer Live Mail to the Mail App in that's included in that program. It will work on those systems as well.

Readers, which e-mail client do you reccommend? Live Mail, Outlook, Thunderbird? Or do you prefer to check your mail online? Click here to let us know in the comments.

We have all been there!

You write a note to your kids asking them to unload the dishwasher only to come home and find NOTHING was done! Their excuse: they never saw the note! Maybe that flimsy note has slipped away onto the floor, never to be read or thought of again.

Or maybe they leave you a note, but you can't read the scribbles! What are you supposed to pick up, whos coming over, when do I take my meds?

Too bad you don't have a video!

But wait, now you do!

So, when your kids or spouse come home they just hit the play button and watch your video on the color screen.

You aren't limited to JUST one single video here!

The external LED lets you know when you have a video waiting. There's no guessing game whether someone has watched their video!

Don't worry, you can hear as well as see the message thanks to the high quality speakers! Know that your voice will be heard loud and clear.

Here's the feature I really love! Check out the built-in magnet on the back! Stick it right up on the fridge and it's a guarantee that no one will miss it.

You've seen those incredibly expensive "smart" refrigerators with their built-in message centers. They cost thousands of dollars.

You can have the same thing for only $14.97 ! No fancy apps! No wireless required. It's a time saver and space saver!

Computers 101

Dave from Aliso Viejo writes:

I am concerned with Windows 10 upgrade. When I had Windows XP and upgraded to Win 8, most of my hardware and software was not compatible with 8. I had to buy new scanners, and printers, and software to run on win 8. However, all the hardware and software ran fine on Win 7 systems. So my question is this… Many people spent money upgrading to win 7. Will the stuff that works on win 7 work with Win 10 or will we be forced to buy new hardware, software like we did for win 8…?

I'm afraid that there's no real way to know until Windows 10 is actually finished, because the OS is still a work in progress.

printerfax

My guess from using Windows 10 is that most things that run with 8.1 will run with Windows 10, but I certainly can't make any promises. The real difference between upgrading from 8.1 to 10 and XP to 8 is that XP was 13-year-old operating system when you upgraded to Windows 8. It's not surprising that many things that functioned with XP would not work with Windows 8. If your scanner or printer is several years old, it's not likely that the manufacturer is going to bother coming up with new drivers to make it function with a new operating system. It's in their best interest for you to buy a new piece of equipment.

Windows10start1

It's much more likely that a three-year-old printer is going to work with a new operating system than a 10-year-old printer. Your best bet will be to check the manufacturer's website for your printer when the Windows 10 upgrade is released. They should have compatibility information and offer downloads of Windows 10 drivers if there are any available.

On The Move

Jer from MN writes:

I bought an HP Pavilion computer recently to replace one with Win XP on it. To my displeasure I found out after the fact that the Pavilion did not have a means of using my HP Laser Jet printer. No cable hook up, and the Laser Jet doesn't have a USB hook up either. My guess at this point is I'll need to buy a wireless printer to use it with the Pavilion. That wouldn't be my choice as I have 3 HP printers with the conditions, and the Laser Jet has been a remarkable printer all the years I've used it. If you know of any solutions to this problem I'm sure I and many others that are contemplating new computers will welcome it.

This is one of those problems where upgrading can actually cause more problems than it solves if you still have working equipment that doesn't interface well with the newest operating system or hardware specifications.

The easiest way to fix this problem is simply to pick up an adapter cable like this that has both types of connections.

printercable

You'll need one that features the parallel port connection on one end you'd need for your LaserJet printer, and a USB plug on the other side for connecting to your new computer that only has USB connections.

If you can't find an adapter that will work for your specific printer (or, more likely, if HP doesn't have drivers for your older printer available for your new computer's operating system), there is still an option available besides buying a wireless printer.

If you still have your old computer with Windows XP and don't mind leaving it turned on all the time, you can simply leave the LaserJet connected to your old computer, and then share the printer on your home network. If your new Pavilion computer is also connected to your network, it will be able to use the printer just like it was directly connected through a cable.

To set this up, open the Control Panel on your XP machine and select the "Printers and Faxes" option. Right-click the entry for your LaserJet printer, and select the "Sharing" option.

Sharing Printer

On the "Sharing" tab, select the "Share This Printer" radio button and take note of the name of the printer. Click "Apply" to start...

Word 2013: Clear The Clutter

If you find the look of Word 2013 to be just a little cluttered in comparison to pre- Office 2007 versions, I've got some tips that just might help. Since I write for a living, I spend a lot of time using Word. With the ribbon turned on and all of the options in view, it can be difficult to find the simple commands you need every day. Here's how to fix that in just a few clicks.

Let's start out with your basic view with the ribbon (the large menu at the top of the screen) turned on. All those options can look just a little busy.

At the top right of the screen you'll see an icon that looks like a square with an arrow in it.

When you click that icon, you'll see options for viewing the ribbon.

If you select Show tabs, the ribbon will disappear from the document and you will be left with the tabs that will allow you to navigate to menus for design, review, mailing etc… should you need them. The document already looks cleaner.

Helicopter Photography

Photography on land is fun, but snapping in the air is sheer adventure. A bird's eye view is completely different from a general view. Remember, helicopter photography is an art in itself. And knowing what to do, can make for some memorable helicopter photography. Here are some of the different ways you can make the most of your digital camera.

For starters

Before you get inside the helicopter, take a picture of it landing on the tarmac. The closer to the ground, the better it will appear. Ensure that the pilot and the passenger figure in the frame as well. That will add more life to the aircraft. And if you can shoot multiple aircraft. better still.

Step with caution

You will have to watch your every step in a chopper. When in the front seat , there is a possibility of stumbling. You might step on the yoke or collide with any of the anatomical parts of the helicopter . So, stay away from all the controls. Shooting will be smooth if all the photographic equipment is handy. You will be thankful to yourself for being organized. For example, swapping lenses in mid air will be easier.

Clip and strap

As the chopper tilts and turns, the gear could be strewn all over. Hence, strap your gear. You won't get back any that rolled out the door. The spare lens can be tucked in a bag. Fasten the camera to you or to your belt loop. The default camera strap may restrict your mobility while taking the pictures. Check all the equipment on the ground so that shooting in the air proves to be a joyful experience.

Face the space

Slide the door and step out when you are sure about the harness. Place your foot on the step and this will keep the doorway out of the shooting range. Check for blades in some of the shots. Sky photos are a feast to the eyes. You will not get tired of wide angle lens shots of sky. Ensure that the rotor blades don't feature in them. If they do, then the pictures will be blurred due to their speed. That's a sure way to spoil the beauty of the sky...

One More Big Deal

Whether you're on the computer daily, hourly, or all night... the LAST thing you want to be fighting with is a spotty, "dragging its feet" wireless Internet connection!

E-mails taking forever to load, videos buffering for 10 minutes, and your kids sent you a great vacation photo... but it refuses to download!

AHHHHHHHHHH!

You've tried everything! You reset the router, you unplug the modem and plug it back in, you've even called out your ISP to check on the issue!

Guess what?

The solution is WAY simpler than you thought!

You need a LAN adapter that's not holding you back!

See, no matter what kind of Internet you pay for, if your LAN adapter isn't up to par, it's costing you speed and stability! All of the data has to go through there, and poor adapter performance is notorious for being the bottleneck ruining your online experience!

If you never updated your wireless, you're living in the PAST!

Wireless-G is what used to be the standard... so if your laptop or PC is on the older side, you've got a DECADE old adapter trying to handle modern Internet!

This will make a HUGE impact and improve your quality! If you're replacing an older adapter, you're going to INSTANTLY tell the difference!

Not only can it handle ANY home network...

Not only does it setup in SECONDS by simply plugging into a USB port...

Not only will it increase your speeds...

IT WILL EVEN INCREASE YOUR COVERAGE!

So you get all the benefits of increased coverage without having a GIGANTIC antenna sticking out!

That room you WANTED to use your laptop in, but the Internet always dropped the moment you walked in?

Or maybe your basement/upstairs that never could even FIND the WiFi before?

Now you CAN! And you don't have to have a gigantic antenna sticking out to do it!

You can use this Comtrend adapter anywhere and you won't have to worry!

Talk about being travel-friendly!

It's an eyesore, it blocks other devices, and honestly it puts them at big risk for getting snapped off!

(Once you snap a USB device out of the port... you're going to lose the port too!)

Despite it's mini design, it's still PACKED with power, especially with the internal antenna!

To test it out, we hooked it up to one of the computers in the office that's furthest away from the router!

I went from having a moderate connection to a strong one instantly!

And it STAYED there! No more drops, no more loading errors!

"Hey Steve, what about security?"

Of course! I would NEVER recommend any wireless network device that wasn't secure!

This thing comes with all the standards:

  • WPA
  • WPA2
  • 64-bit WEP
  • And 128-bit WEP!

That means you can do anything from logging into e-mails, to online shopping, to even online banking and you don't have to worry about a thing!

One WICKED Price!

Okay, so get get this...

For a LIMITED TIME ONLY, I'm selling this monster LAN adapter for just $12.97!

That's cheaper than we usually have wireless adapters that only go to 150 Mbps!

So yeah, this is a deal you do NOT want to miss. Make sure to grab one before they're gone, because you KNOW they're gonna be gone soon!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/10038

If these sell out, the sale is OVER! Even if there's a few left, Wednesday they go back to $19.97 so don't delay!

Grizzly Cub

I came across this guy and his mother while out searching for a large male griz I'd spotted the day before. This, umm, "little" guy and his mom were actually strolling right along the roadside and blended in with the trees remarkably well. I was lucky there was a group of cars stopped or I might have driven right past them! Upon spotting them, I pulled over and yanked the gear out of the back – hoping my 600mm lens wasn't going to be too much – I was literally shooting from right across the road. Although you might expect...(More)
