Mike from New Milford writes: I just read Patricia's letter about the difficulty transferring data from an XP computer. You offered many excellent suggestions but I think I have one more. She could move all those records to a cloud account where they would always be available, Then setting up a new computer would not be such a chore.
I agree with you that a cloud account is a great way to transfer files to a new computer. In fact, users with a Gmail, Outlook.com, Hotmail, MSN or Windows Live Mail e-mail address already have cloud storage available that they may not even know about that's included with their e-mail accounts. The reason I didn't suggest it in the answer is that I find that many people who are reluctant to switch from XP absolutely hate the idea of cloud storage. It's one of the reasons people fear switching to Windows 8, they worry that cloud storage is mandatory. (It's not, but like Mike says, it sure is convenient.) ~ Cynthia Do you use cloud storage? OK, I'm going to keep this simple today. We have probably the best deal ever on a 7" tablet. Period. We're talking a beautiful 7" high res screen with amazing, eye popping colors. We're talking Android 4.4 We're talking a crazy fast QUAD Core 1.5 GHz processor We're talking 4GB of easily expandable storage We're talking front and rear facing cameras We're talking an incredible 3D Graphics unit.
I could gush on and on about how much you're going to love this thing, how you can browse the web, read e-mail, or download thousands of free apps. We could talk about how great this would be to watch movies, read books, or play games. I could even mention that you can now get a FREE version of Microsoft Office for it. But you kind of know all that already.
Now, if you've looked at tablets in your local big box stores, you know that they can be crazy expensive. In fact, you're probably mentally bracing yourself for the potential price of $100 or more.
For non-subscribers, we're talking just $64.97 which is a GREAT deal
As a subscriber to our newsletters, we're going to give you a healthy discount today!

Peggy from Florida writes: "I have Windows 7 installed on my Desktop/Laptop. Due to an electrical problem I need to reinstall Windows 7 but my disc is broken (rolled over it with my chair). Is there any way to get a new one or download it from Microsoft? The disc has already been thrown away after we tried to tape it and use it. Any information and/or assistance will be greatly appreciated. Thanks." Hi, Peggy. Thanks for the great question!
The first thing that I would suggest is that if you do get a replacement disc, guard it well. The further we get away from 7, the harder it's going to be to restore the OS. I had an HP desktop oh a hundred or so years ago that had a little compartment in the top of the case for the restore discs. I never had to used them, and had, in fact, completely forgotten them when I moved the PC to replace it and they fell out. But like they say, it's better to have it and not need it than need it and not have it. Now, for the million dollar question do you have your product key? It looks, more or less like this if you got your 7 in a box.
I'm not entirely sure of what a desktop/laptop is, but your product key may be on a sticker on the bottom of your machine if it's a laptop, and the side if it's a desktop. I ask this because, and I cannot stress this enough, IF YOU DON'T HAVE A PRODUCT KEY, YOU CANNOT REINSTALL YOUR OS. Fortunately, though, there is a way to find it if you no longer possess it, and that is to use a program such as Magic Jellybean keyfinder (https://www.magicaljellybean.com/keyfinder). The free version will find your Windows key quite nicely, and then allow you to save it as a notepad file. I strongly recommend doing this and then saving it to a thumb drive that you store in a secure place. Once you have your product key in hand, go here http://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-recovery and download a Windows 7 ISO file. Using a program such as 7zip, extract the information from the ISO file to create a bootable recovery disc. Hopefully you have a DVD drive on your machine, because the ISO file is too large for a CD. If you don't, you can use a thumb drive. And voila! You have your Windows 7 back. I hope that this helps! ~ Randal Schaffer Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a question for us? Ask it here!
Could Twitter Replace Your Daily Newspaper? A lot of people use social media service Twitter for links to breaking news and other news items of interest and Twitter boss Anthony Noto wants to cement that position, even floating the idea that there could be a Twitter Daily Edition that groups together important Tweets on news topics together. If you aren't familiar with Twitter, it's a social media service, most popular among smartphone users, that allows users to send short messages (140 character) limit. Sometimes these messages (called Tweets) are friends talking about their life or sports or sharing photographs. But more and more news organizations use Twitter to distribute news and to also receive information from Twitter users on the scene of breaking events. A Tweet could just be a sentence, but it can also be a photo or a video and, most importantly, a link back to a news site with more information on a breaking event. I worked for many years in a news and in recent years whenever something major was happening, we would always head to Twitter and search the subject to find out if people were reporting things from the scene or posting photos or videos.
So it's not surprising that Twitter would want to capitalize on this and sort out the Tweets about your dog or your dinner from news content. What form this daily edition might take is still up in the air. It might be a ... Want more, just click WorldStart!
Catherine from Arizona writes: Hi all of you helpful people! I have Windows 7 and use Hotmail. How can I enter a quote or two at the end of my emails without having to type it each time? I do not want to do it in attachment form. Thank you so much. You don't say if you are using an e-mail client or not, but I can show you how to do this at Outlook.com (the new name for Hotmail) or on the Outlook e-mail client and Windows Mail. What you want to do is add an e-mail signature to your messages. For Outlook.com, select the gear symbol in the upper right and choose options from the drop-down menu.
On the Options page, you'll want to scroll down about half-way and choose Formatting, font and signature under Writing email.
Go to Personal signature and type how you'd like to close each e-mail in the text box. You can choose the which font you wish to use as well as the size and color. Then choose... Head to WorldStart to learn more!
The Free Office Suite For Windows, Mac & Linux LibreOffice is free alternative to paying for the Microsoft Office Suite. Microsoft does offer free use of its Office Online Apps at Outlook.com, but you need to be online to use the programs and some functions are only available to paying customers. The developers of Libre Office offer us a complete, permanently updated office suite that you can download and use offline and use as a portable office suite across different devices. What I like the most to LibreOffice is its portability. Microsoft Office doesn't provide a portable version, but LibreOffice does. Anyone can download this version from here and install it on a flash drive. This way, you will always have your documents at your fingertips, no matter where you are. Or you can choose a desktop version here.
Another good thing is that LibreOffice is a cross-platform application. Microsoft Office will only run on Linux based systems through a Wine or PlayOnLinux emulator, but LibreOffice can be installed with no problems, preserving its full functionality on Windows operating systems. In addition the suite offers LibreOffice Draw and LibreOffice Math. These apps compare favorable with any offering from Microsoft. Can you believe that such a great program is free? But wait, there's more... Just click WorldStart for the rest of this helpful tip! For stories, jokes, quotes and cartoons every day, sign up for our Just for Grins newsletter.
