We had a question from a reader named Sandy about upgrading to Windows 10. She writes: Would it be a good idea to reinstall Windows 7 before upgrading to Windows 10? Sandy, I really can't see any reason why you'd take the time and trouble to do that unless you're having some type of issue that makes Windows 7 unusable for you right now. Windows 10 will be overwriting your operating system when you download it. ~ Cynthia Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version

Windows 10: You've Got More Questions Questions about Windows 10 are coming in so fast that it's hard to keep up with them. I thought I'd take a break from writing our guide on Windows 10 to share what I've learned with our readers. Paul wants to know: Do you know with the free upgrade to windows 10 when they download It to your computer will you have to reinstall all our programs, photos, videos etc. like you would if you installed from a disk. David has a similar question: So, Windows 10 will install and everything you have will stay put? Guys here's the scoop. Windows 10 should not overwrite any of your files or programs with the exception of some things that are actually part of the operating system. For example, you'll lose Windows Media Center (not Media Player, but Media Center) and the Games section in Windows 7 that contained Minesweeper and Solitaire. However you can download those games for free from the Windows Store once 10 is installed. I'd still suggest backing up your important files, because you just never know when you're doing any kind of large update what might happen. Margaret has a question about multiple users: In all the Windows 10 descriptions, I've seen no mention of having multiple users on the computer. My spouse and I have, and prefer, much different settings and we hope it won't be homogenized in Windows 10. Any idea? Margaret, there's no change to the ability to customize things for multiple users. In fact, there are even more options for customization like virtual desktops. Donna asks a question I've answered a couple of times already, but it keeps rolling in: I am running Windows7 home premium but I haven't seen the little windows symbol on my taskbar for reserving my copy of Windows 10 how do I reserve it. Donna this has been an issue for several people. I wrote an article a couple of weeks ago. Click here to read. Hopefully one of the solutions offered can help you out. I hope this has answered some of your questions. What are your big questions about Windows 10? Are Self-Driving Cars Dangerous? Google has recently released new data and findings on their self-driving car. As Google says themselves in their June 2015 report, "We've made a lot of progress with our self-driving technology over the past six years, and we're still learning. Every day we head out onto public streets so we can keep challenging and refining our software." Google also announced that moving forward, they will be releasing monthly reports. Much of the released information is positive. For example, with the help of big data analytics tools, the self-driving cars are able to tell the difference between regular vehicles and emergency vehicles and will stop when an emergency vehicle is detected nearby. The report says, "Our car was stopped at a stoplight. Our light had turned green, but we detected an ambulance approaching from the right, so we remained stopped as it passed through the intersection." In fact, the self-driving cars are very perceptive of all movement around them; in one case, while driving at night, two bicyclists suddenly changed paths, and one of them entered the Google car's lane. Google reports, "Our car was able to predict that cyclist's path of travel, so we stopped and yielded. This happened at night, when it would have been very difficult for a human driver to see what was unfolding." Click here to learn the truth about safety and self-driving cars.
Sharon from Chatsworth, California writes: Right now I have Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. This questions is about my email client. When I started I had Windows 98, but I always used Outlook Express. I love Outlook Express. I can get and have Outlook on my PCs, but I have noticed that when Steve does a snapshot of his PC, I'm guessing it says Outlook Express. How do I get it? I know it was a free download from Microsoft, but I'm guess it may be a problem. Sharon, if you are looking at any of our recent screenshots, you aren't seeing Outlook Express. That program hasn't been available for a long time. What you are likely talking about are screenshots of Windows Live Mail. It is a free download from Microsoft and will work well with both Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. I talked about how to get it in this article. Here's a shot of Windows Live Mail. Another client you may have see featured recently on our site are Outlook.

Get Your Head In The Clouds I've gotten a lot of downright panicky questions from readers about the cloud connectivity in Windows 8.1 and Windows 10. Many of you say you don't want to be connected with the cloud in any way. Do you remember the old commercial for Palmolive where the manicurist is extolling the virtues of Palmolive dish detergent and how great it is, and then tells the customer, "You're soaking in it!?" The thing with the cloud is that you're already there whether you like it or not, so you might as well take advantage of what it has to offer you. First let's talk about what I mean when I talk about "The Cloud." Obviously it's not a real cloud, it means a network of off-site computer servers that store, process and share information. These servers are connected to each other and you via the Internet. You've already got quite a lot of information in the cloud. If you have e-mail, your messages are stored... Click here to learn why you shouldn't fear the cloud.
Handimania TV Hey everybody, I stumbled onto a YouTube channel of awesomeness! As you probably have figured out by now I love crafting and creating! I also love how-to videos. This channel offers both! I actually ran across this site when arm knitting became popular last year, but I forgot about it until my sister showed me a video from here on how to separate egg yolks from egg whites using a bottle. The video is pretty cool, they even time it to see if it is faster than the traditional method of doing it by hand. So I was lured here originally by the crafting tutorials like arm knitting, making sock snowmen, or even creating glowing fairy jars. But I stuck around for the how to videos and hacks. They offer really neat hacks like how to sharpen a knife (I had some vague ideas about how this works involving a sharpening stone or strip of leather, but no actual clue how to do it), but what they offer is a practical way to do it if you don't have a sharpener, or how to drill a hole without making a dust mess! They also offer how-to videos like how to open a coconut, how to hull strawberries, or even how to pit cherries without a tool. I'm sending you right over to the video page, so that you can just start watching videos right away. But don't hesitate to check out their About section or their homepage. https://www.youtube.com/user/HandimaniaTV/videos ~Amanda Click here to rate this tip | Printer friendly version Do you have a cool, non-commercial site that you want to share?Send it to Amanda at amanda@worldstart.com
So you're in the garage working on your car. You've got your 9 LED lantern hanging beside you, and while it's emitting fairly sufficient light, you could probably use a few more LED's to be able to see better. It'd also be nice if you could take one or both panels and angle them to better suit your lighting needs. But who makes a lantern that allows you to customize your lighting? Sounds like a pipe dream... You're in the woods, at one with nature. Camping with your family is one of your favorite things to do - but you need a SUPER lantern to compete with the Mother Nature's total darkness. What do you do? Walk around with that weak, yellow-bulbed lantern that you bought back in '86? Good luck with that...Consider this: it's getting dark, and there's not much time left before it's totally pitch black outside. One person is setting up the kindling for the fire, and placing rocks around the pit. Someone else is quickly trying to set the tent up. You have one lantern. What do you do? If only you had a lantern that would allow you to angle the light in two different directions, you'd be all set! But there's no such thing as something as AWESOME as that, right? WRONG! You're NOT GONNA BELIEVE THIS! It's a 30 LED, 360 Degree Swiveling, absolute MONSTER of a lantern...and it's here to ROCK YOUR WORLD while LIGHTING IT UP! How many times have you found yourself in need of a customizable lantern? Maybe you've never even thought of how convenient one can be, but you're about to find out! Let's think about this: where would a BRILLIANT lantern like this come in handy? Let me count the ways... These Features REVOLUTIONIZE The Way We Think About Lanterns! 30 LED = UNBELIEVABLY BRIGHT! Oh, and with the convenient handle, you'll be able to hang it anywhere you want it...but we'll get to the other features in a little bit. First, you need to understand the MAGNITUDE of brightness you're dealing with! You know how bright 1 LED is...so think about what 30 of 'em will look like! Bright white LED light will FLOOD any room - and if you're outside, prepare to be able to see a looooong way. Each "panel" inside this lantern is riddled with 15 LED bulbs - one panel on each side. So it doesn't matter what way it's turned, you'll have BEYOND SUFFICIENT lighting no matter what! Check this out: As if having 30 LED bulbs isn't enough, the engineers at ThinkTank did something that's gonna BLOW YOUR MIND! They took each side panel that comprise the 30 total bulbs, split it in half, and made each panel TOTALLY ADJUSTABLE by a FULL 360 DEGREES! This is an absolutely BRILLIANT IDEA! Now no matter what job lies ahead - whether it's working in the garage, flooding two areas at once for a dark project that involves multiple people, or simply lying in bed reading - you can ANGLE THE LIGHTS to COMPLETELY CUSTOMIZE your lighting! There's NEVER been a lantern able to do this...UNTIL NOW! No matter what conditions you're in, from well-lit to dim all the way to pitch black, and no matter what project you have at hand, you'll have ZERO PROBLEMS when it comes to providing your light source! It's a miracle light! This MONSTER is RUGGED! It's exterior is comprised of HIGH-GRADE, super strong reinforced plastic! It's no weakling - so if you bang it around a bit, or even drop it, it's gonna be fine! This lantern was designed with workin' in mind, so you're not getting some dainty, weak, cheap product here. You're getting a super-strong WORK TOOL that'll last you a VERY long time. And although you probably already know this, remember LED is UNBELIEVABLY EFFICIENT! You could leave this baby on for A DECADE STRAIGHT before the bulbs will EVER burn out. And due to the efficient, ENERGY SAVING technology found in LED, your batteries will last 10X longer than with standard bulbs. Did you catch that? TEN TIMES LONGER BATTERY LIFE! And speaking of that, this runs on 3 D batteries (not included). It's got a secure and convenient compartment on the bottom of the lantern, and once the batteries are in - it's ready to rock! No assembly required, no messin' around! Pop the batteries in, push the button, and LOOK OUT - IT'S ABOUT TO GET BRIGHT IN HERE! So go ahead - push the button. But be prepared to turn night into day! CHECK OUT THIS AMAZING PRICE! We were able to score a GREAT deal on these lanterns, so we're passing it along to you! For today ONLY, this 30 LED, 360 Degree SWIVELING BEAST OF A LANTERN can be yours for just $18.97! http://store.worldstart.com/product/7480 PS: We have a dangerously low quantity of this HOT SELLING lantern - so don't hesitate!
