After two critically acclaimed albums Arifa explores new musical territory. Following the Silk Road from the Balkans and the Middle East all the way to China they looked for musicians along that ancient route who had one thing in common: a bowed stringed instrument. The quest resulted in finding three outstanding female musicians, the ‘Voices from the East’: gadulka-player Vanya Valkova from Bulgaria, kamancheh-player Niusha Barimani from Iran and erhu-player Xiaoxu Meng from China.... In their own countries these artists rank among the best in their field. Not only are they true masters of their instruments, the three of them all have beautiful voices.. The willingness and ability of all musicians to step out of their comfort zone of their own tradition and to open their ears and minds to the music, is what makes this project an extraordinary experience. Produced by The Barbican Centre in association with Kazum and with kind support from the Embassy of the Netherlands. |
