iOS 9 Lets You Flip The Bird

It appears that Apple's iOS 9 will let you tell folks off with a colorful emoticon. Leaked images of new emojis show the one-finger salute among your choices. If you're feeling slightly less hostile there's also a unicorn, a turkey and a squirrel. Not to mention a burrito.

Can you see why I love this thing?!

Get it? "Can"? Okay, sorry. I'm just REALLY excited, because this thing is awesome!

No matter how you deal with them, cans are always a pain in the rear!

If you have an old-school can opener, your hands get stiff and sore before you get half-way around the cut!

And if you have one of those newer, automatic appliances?

Well, if it's a REALLY heavy can, sometimes the magnet'll drop them after it's opened, causing a HUGE mess. And then you have to deal with that dangerous, sharp, lid stuck to the magnet!

(Not to mention they're big and bulky themselves, taking up a lot of precious kitchen real estate!)

So here's how it works:

You pop this thing down on the lid of a can.

Then you press the button.

Now you just sit back and watch it go!

The can opener works its way around the can by itself, and after it's done, you simply lift it up and the magnet pulls the lid off!

Open cans of ANY size!

Because of the way this works, it doesn't care if the can is 2 inches in diameter or 100 inches! It'll just go around its merry way until that can is OPEN!

Regular can openers leave those sharp, dangerous edges around the cut! Not only does it make it a risk to hold, those lids LOVE to rip open your garbage bags if you throw them away!

Better yet - the convenient size makes it a joke to store! You can put this with your silverware!

Heck, if you go camping, this is going to be a great tool to pack along!

AND IT'S SO CHEAP!

Electric can openers run you about $30 for a reliable one. Plus they're big, heavy, and take up a lot of kitchen space.

Why even bother?!

This isn't just smaller, lighter, and MORE EFFICIENT... it's cheaper too!

You can grab one of these amazing can openers for just $10.97!

Unless you wait until tomorrow, then you might just see a big "Out of Stock" notice!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/10561

There's a chance some of these might last until Saturday but even then, the sale will be over and they'll cost $14.97!

Computers 101

Just How Big Is An eBook?

I got this message from a reader concerned about the size of our Windows Guide. "I don't see how my computer could possible have room for something with more than 400 pages. It would probably take hours to download a file that large."

This brings up an interesting point about our Ultimate Guide to Windows 10, as well as other eBooks. Actually, despite being a long book with hundreds of pages and images, it's not really that big of a file. The information has been converted into a PDF. That stands for Portable Document Format and can contain a huge amount of information in a reasonably-sized file.

pdfcrop

You'll also find eBooks in the epub format and Amazon's Kindle Package Format. All of these file types allow you to fit a tremendous amount of information in a file. That's why a Kindle can hold thousands upon thousands of eBooks.

ereader-kindle-voyage

The actual size of the 400-page guide is 14.23 MB. To put that in perspective, a photo on my phone is 3.6 MB. That mean the guide is equal in size to 3 or 4 photos. With a high-speed connection it takes 10 to 15 seconds to download. A PDF this size is actually small enough to attach to an e-mail.

Most eBooks download rather rapidly. From purchase to the time you can read it on your eReader, tablet, phone or PC the time is usually a matter of seconds. That's one of the best features of eBooks.

A GB can hold 1000 MB. You could fit a lot of these guides on a hard drive without running out of room. The beauty of digital is that is can take something like a stack of records, a shelf full of books or reels of movies and fit it all on your phone or tablet. The average smartphone now has as much computing power as an old desktop PC. Plus it allows you to carry your music collection, magazines and books, photos and movies and TV with you anywhere.

Apple Gets Down To Business With iPad Pro

Apple launched the tablet revolution with the iPad, but it has faced stiff competition from Android, and most recently from Microsoft's well-received Surface Pro tablet.

The company is stepping up it's game with the 12.9 " $799 iPad Pro (the biggest iPad ever.)

iPad-pro

In addition to the size, the iPad pro features a detachable Smart Keyboard and the Apple Pencil. Both features that might remind you of a Surface Pro. Like the Surface keyboard, it converts to a cover for your device, making it lightweight and easy to carry.

iPad-pro-keyboard

According to Apple each keyboard "is crafted from a sheet of highly durable custom-woven fabric that's laser ablated to form the shape of each key." They promise this leads to a keyboard that gives you the spring of a mechanical keyboard without the need for mechanisms of any kind. The cover will cost $169.

The Apple Pencil will give precision control to...

What Do Processes Mean?

I am glad to see that lots of you read my article on understanding the Task Manager. But it's given rise to a lot of questions.

Richard from Colorado writes:

Everything listed in the various windows is in shorthand, so to speak. How does one know what it represents and whether they should/could stop the process/service, etc.

Dot from NC writes:

How do I find out what is ok to let run on task mgr. and what to remove?I am so glad for this info but still do not know what to do now.

Lillian asks:

You've told us what each tab contains, but you didn't say if a person should get rid of any thing under the specific headings. If there are programs that need to be deleted, which ones would that be? I'm always afraid to take anything off of my PC in case it's the wrong thing.

I see that many of you are concerned about the things listed in the task manager. And I will give you the same caution I did about checking Event Viewer. Unless you are having some kind of issue with your computer, you probably don't need to worry about all the processes running. There are going to be a lot of them. That doesn't mean there's a problem.

I can't give you a list of what every process running on a computer might or might not be, because every system is different. But there is a way you can get a better idea of what a process is associated with.

Applications are usually pretty straight forward. You'll see what's running.

You can right-click and select Go to process.

And you'll see the process associated with the application in the processes tab.

The Winner

A man wins a football pool, and he said to himself, 'I'll buy a car.'

He goes down to the used car lot, sees a really old car he likes and asks the salesman , 'I'd like a car. How much is that?'

The salesman says '$1600."

He said, 'I can't afford that. I've only got $200"

The salesman says, 'How about a bicycle?' He said, 'I don't want a bike. I've never learned to ride."

"How about a pair of skates?" suggested the salesman.

The man says, "All right."

So he bought the skates, skated over to his favorite sports bar and left them in the parking lot. He went inside, had a drink, came out and this skates were gone.

So he went back to the bartender, "Somebody's taken my skates!"

The bartender says, "Don't get excited. They can't have cost you much."

The customer says, "That's not the point. How am I going to get home?"

Paging Lucille

Years ago, before cellphones, back when pagers were big, I worked in the customer service call center of a national pager company. I dealt with the usual complaints regarding poor pager operation, as well as the occasional loony caller demanding to be paged less often, more often, or by more interesting people.

A good call came from a guy, who repeatedly complained that he keeps being paged by 'Lucille.'

I told him he would have to call her and tell her to stop paging him.

"She never leaves a number, so I can't call her back," he said.

After three calls, I asked how he knew it was Lucille if she didn't leave a number.

"She leaves her name," he insisted.

After establishing that the customer had a numeric-only pager, the light bulb came on.

"How does she spell her name?"

"L-O-W C-E-L-L," he said.

I explained that it was time to change the battery. Yet another technical problem solved!

Amanda's Coolsite

MakerSpace

Since starting my Library and Information Science program, I've heard a ton about makerspaces. Makerspaces are creative, DIY spaces where people can gather to create, invent, and learn. I've discovered that Madison has a very prominent one, the Bubbler, created by the Madison Public Library.

I was curious as to what sort of sites I could find on the web that would provide an online community that offers the same kind of information as a physical makerspace. I found MakerSpace!

You need an account to get started, but you can click Spaces and browse the types of offerings available on the site.

To register, click the Sign Up link beneath the login form, and provide a working e-mail address and password. Next you'll fill out your profile page. You can add a photo of yourself for you avatar too!

After you've saved your profile, you'll be whisked away to the the Space page, but now you can actually see the posts in each topic container and get a feel for the spaces you want to join.

When you find one you like, click the blue Join this Space button. You'll then have the ability to post to the group, and publish projects there. If you want to leave a group, go out to the main Space page, and click the leave button for the group you no longer want to participate in.

I really like the Look What I Made space. It's very inspiring! The space allows users to show off their latest DIY project. The projects run the gamut from programs to hacks to modifcations to crafts to knitting to 3D printing to photography!

I hope you'll check out MakerSpace and get inspired to make stuff!

One More Big Deal

Perfect For... Well, EVERYWHERE!

I can't even BEGIN to explain how cool these are!

Does ANYONE enjoy stumbling around in the dark? That helpless feeling when you KNOW there's a light somewhere, but you just CAN'T get to it!

Here's the one that does - and it's gonna rock your WORLD!

It's 7 MASSIVE LED lights with a built-in motion sensor! Move around near it? You get the light you need!

This COMPLETELY CORDLESS Motion Sensor light is EXACTLY what you need!

That means if you set it up near your front door, the porch, the living room - ANYWHERE - it's gonna turn on right when you need it!

The light will stay on for about 30 seconds, unless it continues to detect motion! Not only can you use this to make going here or there easier, you can use it as a quick alert light!

Pop near the back door and know when the dog needs to be let back in! Or aim it from your house as a burglar repellent! The possiblities are ENDLESS!

Just to test it, I set one of these up outside right over my front door. The mounting took all of about... 5 seconds.

Anyway, it only took the very FIRST time for me to come home at night and realize how awesome this light was!

Suffice to say, it's still there- and I don't plan on taking it down anytime soon!

But that's only ONE potential use! This thing is perfectly sized for pretty much anywhere!

Closets Garages Steps
Porches Patios Cabinets
Work Benches Decks ANYWHERE!

If you need a light in ANY place, this is the one to put there!

You Can Even Aim It Perfectly!

So, not only is this light gonna set up where you need it, you can aim it right where you want! The base swivels all the way around in a 360.

But if that wasn't enough, the light tilts up and down too!

No matter where you install the light, you can fine-tune the angle EXACTLY where you want!

Jaw-Dropper Price For a LIMITED TIME ONLY!

Words and pictures just don't do this light justice - it's so freakin' bright that no matter WHERE you put it, it's gonna make the Sun look like a slacker!

But that doesn't mean you gotta break the bank just to afford it! This little guy is only $12.97!

I gotta say - you do NOT want to miss this one! Make sure you get to the store before they all sell out!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/10562

PS - Saturday the sale will end and these will go up to $16.97 so don't miss out!

Au Sable Lighthouse And The Milky Way

I captured this image of Au Sable Lighthouse one night on a backpacking trip. OK, truth be told, the reason I was backpacking is that the backcountry camp is only a 4 minute walk from the lighthouse – much more fun at night than the 3 mile round trip hike from the main parking area! At any rate, this one was tricky. The biggest problem was…(More)

Hurricane River Sunset

I was on my fall trip and decided to spend some time at the Hurricane River area. I had been to this location before and had always struggled to find a composition I liked. So, I spent quite a bit of time in a mental tug-of-war trying to decide if I even wanted to give this another go. In the end I decided to...(More)

Cataloochee Elk Bugle

Honestly, I'd love to have some epic story here, but it was pretty simple. I spotted this guy trying to steal, err, borrow cows from another bull. They would bugle back and forth, move in towards each other, and then this guy would (wisely) back off. He knew better than to..(More)
