Flash: What Will Happen To Game Sites?

George read our article about the security and stability issues for Flash Player, and asked: If Flash is being done away with, what is being(or will be) done on games sites such as Pogo?

pogocroped

Back in 2010, Pogo released an HTML 5 version of Poppit for the Chrome Web store that was included as part of Chrome. But since then, the company has, in its own words, "dabbled from time to time on some HTML5 code."

Despite the security flaws in Flash Player, Pogo seems to count on Flash being around for awhile longer. They're faced with the choice of spending a substantial amount of money to rebuild existing games in a new platform or to just let the PC games die if Flash support is discontinued and concentrate their efforts on mobile gaming apps. That's really the choice face by any site that depends on the Flash platform, unless Adobe can find a way to make it secure.

Can you see why I love this thing?!

Get it? "Can"? Okay, sorry. I'm just REALLY excited, because this thing is awesome!

No matter how you deal with them, cans are always a pain in the rear!

If you have an old-school can opener, your hands get stiff and sore before you get half-way around the cut!

And if you have one of those newer, automatic appliances?

Well, if it's a REALLY heavy can, sometimes the magnet'll drop them after it's opened, causing a HUGE mess. And then you have to deal with that dangerous, sharp, lid stuck to the magnet!

(Not to mention they're big and bulky themselves, taking up a lot of precious kitchen real estate!)

So here's how it works:

You pop this thing down on the lid of a can.

Then you press the button.

Now you just sit back and watch it go!

The can opener works its way around the can by itself, and after it's done, you simply lift it up and the magnet pulls the lid off!

Open cans of ANY size!

Because of the way this works, it doesn't care if the can is 2 inches in diameter or 100 inches! It'll just go around its merry way until that can is OPEN!

Regular can openers leave those sharp, dangerous edges around the cut! Not only does it make it a risk to hold, those lids LOVE to rip open your garbage bags if you throw them away!

Better yet - the convenient size makes it a joke to store! You can put this with your silverware!

Heck, if you go camping, this is going to be a great tool to pack along!

AND IT'S SO CHEAP!

Electric can openers run you about $30 for a reliable one. Plus they're big, heavy, and take up a lot of kitchen space.

Why even bother?!

This isn't just smaller, lighter, and MORE EFFICIENT... it's cheaper too!

You can grab one of these amazing can openers for just $10.97!

Unless you wait until tomorrow, then you might just see a big "Out of Stock" notice!

http://store.worldstart.com/product/10561

There's a chance some of these might last until Tuesday but even then, the sale will be over and they'll cost $14.97!

Convert HTML To JPG

Saving documents and images from the Internet can be tricky. I recently got this e-mail from a reader: "I am not an office person. I recently downloaded a letter that I need to upload to another site. The letter is in .html and the site I need to upload to will not accept html. A previously scanned and emailed document in .jpeg IS acceptable. Open Office doesn't allow me to convert .html to .jpeg. Am I going to have to print, scan and email the other document to myself just to get it in .jpeg ? I see a lot of ads for software that will do this. Let me know what you think. P.S. I've rarely even had use for a printer/scanner. Until now."

I think the beginning of this issue for you was that you didn't save the document you wanted. You saved the webpage, which is written in HTML, instead of saving an image or a document. HTML is designed to be opened in browsers.

There may be simpler solutions than converting the image.

If possible, try going back to the original web page, selecting the item you wish to save and right-clicking. You should see the option to save an image.

right-click-save-image

You may be able to save it as a JPG or perhaps as a PNG or Tiff. Then you can open up the image in a program like Paint (included for free on Windows PCs) and save it as a JPG.

Or you could open that HTML image in a browser and try the steps mentioned above. You could also press the PrtScn key to take a screen shot.

prtscncrop

Then open Paint and hit Ctrl + V or right-click and choose "Paste" to paste the image into Paint.

paste-in-paint

Then crop off the portion you need and save it as a JPG file. You could also try a free online converter like Convertio

converto

Upload the file you wish to convert, select the format you want to save it in and then choose Convert.

converto-choose-convert

You can then download the file, save it to cloud storage or choose to have it e-mailed to you.

I hope one of these solutions helps.

Wearable Tech Stars In New Reality Show

Some of the best innovations often come from the minds of normal people who simply have a great idea. The problem is many of those people have no way to broadcast their ideas to the general population. That's why a new reality series could be one of the more intriguing ones to come along in quite some time. America's Greatest Makers is a new reality show in the works that's scheduled to debut on TBS in 2016. The show sports an impressive pedigree with Mark Burnett of Survivor fame backing the project. Noted tech company Intel is also sponsoring it. While America's Greatest Makers is still a number of months away from debuting, the potential the series promises is something that could revolutionize one particular area of technology: wearable devices.

make-it-wearable

The basic idea behind America's Greatest Makers is to take people from all over the country with original ideas for new wearable devices and have them compete against each other. The show will follow a select few as they develop and improve on their ideas, with the eventual winner receiving $1 million, along with the full backing of Intel to produce their product and take it to the rest of the world. The show is still accepting applications (the deadline is October 2), so it's difficult to say what kind of ideas are being proposed at this point, but the number of possibilities are certainly fascinating, especially to those within the wearable technology community.

Can't Play A File? VLC Player To The Rescue!

Have an audio or video file that you can't seem to open on your computer? Let me tell you about a great, free program that can make your life a whole lot easier. VLC Player is the answer to your codec error problems. What's a codec you might ask. My flip answer is that codecs are the devil, but the more technically correct answer is that a codec is a device or program that compresses data for faster transmission and then decompresses the data. You'll see a codec error when the programs on your computer don't recognize the program that compressed the data in the file you're trying to open.

I worked for many, many years in television and codec errors were the bane of our existence. A commercial made on a particular editing system would refuse to open on another one. Sometimes a file would refuse to open on the same system running a different version of software. Where it really caused problem was when we tried to open surveillance video provided to us by various law enforcement agencies. Every single one of them used a different format. Good luck finding America's most wanted when you can't open the video.

Thankfully, a very wise engineer introduced me to VLC. It's free and I've yet to find anything it won't open. VLC Play was developed by VideoLAN organization, a non-profit the promotes free, open-source multimedia solutions. You can choose to donate if you wish, but it's not required.

Take a look at the video formats it supports...

How Do I Get Internet On My TV?

With so many folks cutting the cord or signing up for subscription services, getting Internet on your TV is important. Robert wants to know how to make it happen. He writes: "I read if you got a WiFi router you can hook up the Internet to your TV sets. How can you do that for free without cable or a new box. Have not found the right solution yet. I like to watch anything on the Internet on my big screen TV sets besides my computer monitor. If you find a site, tell me how."

You don't need cable to get Internet on your television, but if you want Internet on your TV, you'll either need to start with a Smart TV that's Internet-ready or get yourself a streaming box or streaming stick of some kind. These devices allow you to run apps that connect with the Internet.

chromecast

Fortunately, they are not difficult to use and aren't too expensive (around $40.) A Chromecast or Amazon Fire TV stick will plug right into the HDMI port on your TV. Also, if you happen to own a game console like a PlayStation or an Xbox, these devices will also allow you to access the Internet using apps.

xboxsystem

From your question, I wonder if what you really want to do is watch the output of your PC. Many newer PCs have the ability to add a wireless display. Here's how to do it...

Most libraries even have a full digital collection of videos, books, magazines and more that you can read right on your tablet!

Chances are, you've been using a computer for YEARS... aren't you tired of being tied down to that desk?

And it's no surprise: you're getting a REAL computer that fits in your hands.

Au Sable Lighthouse And The Milky Way

I captured this image of Au Sable Lighthouse one night on a backpacking trip. OK, truth be told, the reason I was backpacking is that the backcountry camp is only a 4 minute walk from the lighthouse – much more fun at night than the 3 mile round trip hike from the main parking area! At any rate, this one was tricky. The biggest problem was…(More)

Hurricane River Sunset

I was on my fall trip and decided to spend some time at the Hurricane River area. I had been to this location before and had always struggled to find a composition I liked. So, I spent quite a bit of time in a mental tug-of-war trying to decide if I even wanted to give this another go. In the end I decided to...(More)

Cataloochee Elk Bugle

Honestly, I'd love to have some epic story here, but it was pretty simple. I spotted this guy trying to steal, err, borrow cows from another bull. They would bugle back and forth, move in towards each other, and then this guy would (wisely) back off. He knew better than to..(More)
