Quick Tip

Can I Use A Stylus?

JoAnne has an issue with touchscreens. She writes: "Is there a stylus that I can use instead of my finger? I have a circulation problem and I have to keep changing fingers. My tablet brings on tingling in my hand and fingers."

JoAnne, you should be able to use just about any stylus you like. Styluses range from models that just work as styluses to those that are combo pen/light/styluses.

I'd suggest you take advantage of some of the accessibility features of your device to alleviate stress on your fingers. Use voice controls instead of typing for searching online and composing messages.

Remember that you don't need to keep your hand locked in position with your finger hovering over the screen all the time. Rest your hand when you aren't actively using it to navigate. Also, a touch screen is pretty sensitive, so you don't need to apply a whole lot of pressure to use it. Go with a light touch to make sure you aren't giving your fingers more of a workout that necessary.

A Sad Fact, But a True One....

Hard drives are sensitive, complex mechanical devices. No matter what, 100% of the time, they will eventually fail - causing a crash. This can be a disaster.

What will you do when this happens? Sure, you can pull out your program CD's (like your Windows program) and reinstall your operating system. But what about ALL OF YOUR DATA? You know, pictures, videos, files, settings...the list goes on and on.

Now consider this: there's hundreds of millions of computer users out there, and 80% of them do NOT back their files up. Why? Because until now, backing everything up was a long and complicated process. You'd have to find specific things to back up, deal with directories, file extensions, etc. IF you were able to figure it out, there's no way you'd have the time to back up every single thing. I mean...you've gotta sleep sometime, right?

These problems are over for good!

Did I mention it's automatic? Well guess what? IT'S ALL AUTOMATIC!

The ClickFree Automatic Backup Hard Drive is here!

NO software. NO set up. NO time consuming steps. All you have to do is PLUG IT IN and it AUTOMATICALLY finds, scans and saves ALL of your files - you don't have to do anything!

It's a MASSIVE 1 TERABYTE of AUTOMATIC back-up space!

It's USB 3.0 and FULLY compatible with USB 2.0: If you're working from a new USB 3.0 machine, you're not gonna believe the speed! And if you're working with USB 2.0, don't worry - this is FULLY compatible and gives you the absolute maximum speed possible! It's the best of both worlds, and prepared for the future!

It'll even categorize your music, pictures, videos and documents into separate areas for maximum organization! Oh, and it works on multiple computers - you've gotta check this thing out!

Think about everything you keep on your computer: TONS of photos. Your ENTIRE music collection. Work documents, important files and sensitive information. And don't forget about those vacation and family gathering videos. You've gotta back that stuff up!

If You Think it's Hard or Time Consuming - YOU'RE WRONG!

Seriously, this thing couldn't be any easier to use: EVERYTHING IS AUTOMATIC!

All you have to do is pop it into your USB port and let it do it's thing. As soon as it's done, you'll be presented with ALL of your files, backed up and organized! And there's a TON of cool features on this thing, too. Check this out:

Open this up, and you can view ALL of your saved files the same way they were saved. You'll know exactly what you're looking at and exactly where it is!

This is COMPLETELY iTunes compatible! Take your iPhone, iPod or iPad, and this copies ALL of your media, backs it up, and automatically places it in your iTunes library! It's always there, and it's always backed up!

Go ahead and use it with any and all of your computers. From your work PC to your home computer - Windows OR Mac - doesn't matter, this can do it!

Check out the image below. This is what you're presented with after ClickFree automatically backs up all of your files. Remember, this starts as soon as you stick it into your computer. You don't have to do ANYTHING to get to this step:

A MASSIVE 1 TB with Maximum 256 Bit Security!

You're not going to be running out of space any time soon, that's for sure!

And since you have so much space, you can EASILY use this for multiple computers - from your work PC to your home computer! In fact, it was designed with multiple computer use in mind. And don't worry about security, either. Check this out!

Have no fear - your files and media are protected by a 256 Bit security feature!

No matter what, even if this hard drive was stolen, there's ZERO chance that anyone will be able to hack it and get into your files. It's 100% worry free MAXIMUM security!

Help! I Can't Open E-mail Attchments In Windows 10

Walt's having an issue opening e-mail attachments in Windows 10. He writes: "Before downloading Windows 10 I could read email attachments. Now when I try to open them it tells me I have to get Office and that is a costly addition. What has changed?"

Walt, my guess is that you need to set a default program to open documents.

Type "default programs" in your search box and click on the result.

default-programs-windows-10

Choose Set your default programs.

Do you know which program you used to open documents in Windows 7? Find that program on the list. If you aren't sure, I'd suggest finding WordPad on the list of Programs. WordPad, which is included free in Windows 10, is a good choice to select as your default program for opening documents.

set-default-program

Also, if you have another Office Suite, such as the free LibreOffice, you can choose programs associated with it for opening documents.

You don't say what type of attachments you are trying to open. If they include PowerPoint presentations or spreadsheets, you have a couple of options.

You can download a free office suite like Open Office or LibreOffice and set their presentation and spreadsheet programs as the default program to open those types of attachments.

Or you can right click to save your attachment, then go to Outlook.com. (I see you have a Hotmail address, so just use that account to log in.)

There you can use the free Microsoft Online Office apps to open spreadsheet or presentation files.

I hope this helps.

Is It Safe To Unplug My External Drive?

Carolyn from Oklahoma writes:

I live in tornado alley here in Oklahoma. We have a storm shelter and because of the good weather coverage we usually have time to gather up a few things to take down in the shelter. I have a My Book (the only name I could find.)backup drive & have started wondering if it would be possible to grab that, too. Would it hurt anything if I unplugged it (whether the computer gets shuts off or not) & took it with me? If so, would it be safe to just plug it back in later?

mybook

As a fellow resident of the Midwest, I can sympathize. Many times, I've grabbed the lock box and a pet and headed to the basement as the sirens wailed. Except when I worked in TV news, then it was a signal to fire up the laptop and started updating the station's website from home until it passed and then head into work.

Carolyn, situations like a tornado are one of the reasons you do a backup to an external drive of your computer. By all means take your...

10 Smart Photoshop Tips

You don't have to master Photoshop in order to know how to edit your photos and make them look better. I selected some basic tips and techniques for you, which you can easily apply to your photos and make them more vibrant, appealing and beautiful!

These smart Photoshop tips will come in handy especially if you want to edit your family photos for an album, or even if you want to save some money and edit your wedding photos yourself! You'll see, this is not as difficult as you may think.

All the Photoshop tips presented here can be applied by any beginner Photoshop user. They are simple and all of them take less than 3 minutes to apply. Enjoy!

1. Blur and Overlay

This technique is used to enhance the color of your image. It will make the lighter tones a bit lighter and the darker tones even darker. This works pretty much like the Contrast tool, but it adds a more subtle and soft contrast to your photos.

To use this technique you have to duplicate your photo layer – press Ctrl+J. Go to the layers palette and look for the blending mode and change it to Overlay. Go to Filter > Blur > Gaussian Blur. Adjust the blur until you get the contrast you want. You'll see how the photo looks like in the Live Preview mode.

The photo now looks more vibrant and has a beautiful, soft contrast.

2. Monochrome

The easiest way to do this is to duplicate your photo layer and go to Image > Adjustments > Desaturate. Now go to Image > Adjustments > Brightness/Contrast and adjust them until you get the black and white photo you like.

Another way to do this is to go to Image...

The Oyez Project

Welcome to the Oyez Project! This project is an unofficial multimedia archive of the Supreme Court where you can find digital audio recordings of the cases heard there.

On the main page you'll find a search field prominently displayed so you can look for specific cases you want to hear with ease. Beneath that you'll find a listing of the latest stories from ISCOTUSnow.

At the top of the page you'll find a navigation bar with Cases, Justices, Benefactors, About, and Tour.

I would definitely recommend checking out the Tour option. It's a virtual tour of the Supreme Court building – interior and exterior – with image details, different views, and the ability to zoom in and out. It's really cool!

You also have the opportunity to check out the new Beta version of the site, and send them your feedback about it! I thought it was a much slicker, with an easier to use interface.

Go check it out today!

Au Sable Lighthouse And The Milky Way

I captured this image of Au Sable Lighthouse one night on a backpacking trip. OK, truth be told, the reason I was backpacking is that the backcountry camp is only a 4 minute walk from the lighthouse – much more fun at night than the 3 mile round trip hike from the main parking area! At any rate, this one was tricky. The biggest problem was…(More)

Hurricane River Sunset

I was on my fall trip and decided to spend some time at the Hurricane River area. I had been to this location before and had always struggled to find a composition I liked. So, I spent quite a bit of time in a mental tug-of-war trying to decide if I even wanted to give this another go. In the end I decided to...(More)

Cataloochee Elk Bugle

Honestly, I'd love to have some epic story here, but it was pretty simple. I spotted this guy trying to steal, err, borrow cows from another bull. They would bugle back and forth, move in towards each other, and then this guy would (wisely) back off. He knew better than to..(More)
