MUSIC

I hope you had a stunning, happy and not-too-drunk New Year's Eve, and you ate your black-eyed peas and greens on New Year's Day (for luck and money).

It's a brand-new year in New Orleans, but we're still fighting to keep live music alive here in our fair city. It galls me how a few residents can have such sway over the politics of an entire city, especially as it relates to live music.

RIP CLARK VREELAND
Clark Vreeland from OffBeat 2011
Famed New Orleans guitarist dies at 62.

Clark Vreeland was one-of-a-kind. Were you one of the lucky ones who got to see him perform with the Rhapsodizers at Luigi's near UNO before the band transmogrified into the Radiators?

Vreeland passed away from cancer on December 26 at a hospice center near Atlanta, GA. He was an instrumental musician, songwriter and bandleader key to New Orleans' rock heritage. Read more...

CALVIN
JOHNSON JR.

Last year, Calvin Johnson Jr. released his debut album, the stirring Jewel's Lullaby. Recently, he's followed up the effort with Native Son, an endeavor highlighted by Johnson's matchless soprano saxophone playing, its diverse list of performers and songs, and a shimmering rendition of his late uncle, Ralph Johnson's tune "Petit Fleur."

Tune in to hear Johnson talk about the significance of the New Orleans music family, his own upbringing and his new record...
